If they didn't give their management those OBSCENE bonuses they would have more money for the common worker. The rich just take care of the rich. I hope the guy in finance that cooked up this new scheme someday loses his job

NEVER HAPPEN. They start from the bottom, you know the people who actually DO the work.

You don' think DA MAN is going to give himself a paycut & bring him down to $100k without the car, bonuses and expense account.

He literally EARNS all that money per hour!

If the union starts to make some concessions like the rest of us they wouldn't be worrying about losing their jobs..
I have friends in both Pratt and Hamilton Sunstrand that milk the clock every week with noone watching how many hours they get in.
I have one friend who clocks into Hamilton on weekends midnight shift just to get the hours in..
I often wondered how they afford all the toys they have....

This is a lesson from the new economics. The company is extremely top-heavy with multi-layered management. They grossly mismanage company resource and look outwardly (Japanese) for needed guidance. When all else fails, they trim from the bottom. This creates a huge void by the loss of unique and particular skill sets. Meanwhile, salary workers have long been forced to work unpaid overtime to further enhance the bottom line. How creatively inventive?
They follow this timed-stupidity with pep talks on loyalty (one-way) and the values of the extended working family. In the aftermath of this bloodletting, they become aptly rewarded by Wall Street to further acknowledge their brilliance and business acumen.

James...

You have it right on. Not only that, but many of these 'poor' workers have a 100% paid tuition program available to them...to go for any accredited program, Associates, Bachelor's, Masters & PhD..how many do you think actually take advantage of it? In today's market, either keep your skills up to date or expect to be laid off when you get paid $30 + an hr to push a button or move parts. You can bash UTC all you want, still the best company these guys will ever work for!

Time for Louis Chenevert to exercise his stock options.
Step 1) Announce workforce reduction and restructuring.
Step 2) Wall Street "Industry Experts" say great move and stock price spikes.
Step 3) CEO sells part of his portfolio of UTC stock at spiked market rate. CEO replenishes his portfolio of UTC shares by exercising his stock option, buying stock at prearranged below market price.

You are 100% correct Bev!

Also, this isn't "trimming from the bottom" as the uninformed morons claim it is. P&W if offering a very nice package to workers at ALL levels who are over the age of 60 as of 9/30/08. The longer you've been working for P&W the better the package is.

Of course the Courant doesn't get too much right as usual. The problem isn't with the slow sales of the GP7000 it's a little bit of a lot of things:

1. EADS(Airbus) getting the tanker program.
2. Problems with the F135 program (engine for the JSF or F35).
3. Mature military programs starting to wind down.

A huge bright spot is the geared turbofan where P&W is years ahead of it's competition but it's an engine of the future and P&W is just now starting to line up customers for it.

The best thing that could happen for P&W is if the Air Force rebids the tanker contract PROPERLY and awards some if not all of the business to Boeing which means all P&W has to do is start cranking out PW4000 engines which are already developed.

Why the secrecy? Can't you just give an estimate. And aren't they required to give 60 day notice for a mass layoff such as this? I feel bad for both the salary and hourly workers. There's not much work out there.

Why don't you turn them in then - isn't this an ethics problem? My husband works for Hamilton and busts his butt and when the OT is available he surely works it, but I hear the stories about the milkers no doubt.

I am praying he's not impacted, this could affect us keeping our home.

God bless and good luck to you all with this situation.

Can't these Blue Collar guys do like I did and get on 16 Corporate Boards and give a few speeches? I am sick and tired of the Whiners I swear it's like a mental disorder. If you can't do that, can't you just charge all your time to a government cost plus contract? The milk is warm.

Companies that offshore their workforce should not be eligible for government contracts. Pure and simple.

Traitors and pigs at UTC, rewarded by our own tax dollars. When will the sheeple say ENOUGH?

I thought the goal was to make P&W ACE Gold by May 2008.
Is ACE not working?
Or does UTC want more and more profits at the cost of their old cash cow?

Everyday you see some story about some P&W partnership with China, India, or Puerto Rico on the company Intranet. They're outsourcing as much work as they can to make the most profit.

All ACE does is create Standard Work documentation so it's easier to farm everything out.
