If the workers at Toyota want to unionize, they should affiliate with a Japanese union. The UAW's goal is to put Toyota out of business. Why would you join an organization that wants to eliminate your job?

the first post is an interesting parable but it fails to show what's actually wrong there,
these next 2 posts show the real problem:

"The only problem is Toyota is becoming more American every day. The only thing holding them up are the good rowers that are still working. "

"The rowers as you call them are getting fewer and fewer while there are more supervisors to tell them what they are doing wrong and how to do a job that the supervisor has no idea about. Poor rower pulled a muscle and out the door he goes. That's a great way to run a business. "

i worked for years at a 24hr restaurant, we had 3 managers - one per shift, that's all - one manager on any given shift.

at toyota ADMIN side as an employee you currently have a GM, a Mgr, an AM, and a Supervisor, and they all work on one shift - dayshift.

compare to the restaurant who had ONE mgr, toyota admin gives you FOUR.

the Japanese owners are getting screwed by the corrupt american managers here, why is it going so bad?

they say they run lean - no they're only lean on the part of workers,

as for mgrs they are OBESE.

Quite correct, there are other unions out there. UAW is not the only player in the book, just the best known.

To all those that talk badly about unions, think of them as defense attorneys for the common worker. If you had to go to court to possibly lose everything, would you go without a lawyer?

The union is there to protect what you have. Protection costs money, hence the union dues. Law only allows them either one or two hours pay per month for dues. I actually have forgotten exactly. We spend more on cigarettes, beer, sodas, you name it....
