<quoted text>how did you do that
you apply liquid foundation to your skin. let it dry. rub the piece of jewelry across it. if it leaves a black or green mark it is real gold.

OK, One more time I will speak out against the "makeup trick", IF you are someone who dosent mind throwing GOLD away, then by all means, rely on this test. BUT IF you actually want to know what your item is, THEN INVEST THE $5 AND BUY A DARN TEST KIT!
NO I dont sell the test kits, and I am not affiliated with anyone who does, But I may be perfectly willing to buy some of your "not gold" that you have tested with the "makeup trick"
I myself use a little uncommon sense,(since "common sense" is obviously a thing of the past).
Any 10 year old with even a rudamentary grasp of the language should be able to do a search for "gold test kits" through Google or the search engine of your choice....If you arent willing to spend less than $10 for a test kit, then you DESERVE to get ripped off!
I apologize If I sound rude, but peoples insistance on the more STUPID ways of "testing" gold have begun to rub me raw! Ask ANY reputable jeweler or commodities broker what they think of these methods of testing, and they will LAUGH IN YOUR FACE...or offer you a couple of dollars for your "not gold" items!!

Since very few people entering this site are willing to actually READ THE PAST QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS, instead INSISTING on taking the LAZY and TOO DARN STUPID route of just reposting a question that has been asked and answered 200 times before, I will be leaving this group.
I enjoy helping others, whereas there once was a day when I myself needed a bit of guidance, but it seems that the days of anyone actually willing to put forth any kind of effort in order to learn something....are gone almost entirely.
Ignorance I can deal with.....but blatantly lazy stupidity I cannot!

Stephanie, 589 is a non standard mark, many older artisans used gold that they had processed/refined and alloyed themselves, these non standard markings may or may not be authentic, if they are in fact authentic, then the maker must have had the piece assayed,(tested for gold purity) in order to recieve the non standard mark....Maybe your mark is actually "585" which is 14k.....Sometimes the markings are badly stamped or simply worn away, I am going to assume that your mark is in fact the europaen 585 mark for 14k.
Hope this helps.

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help?
I have a ring which belonged to my fiance's Kate grandmother. I chose this to wear at my wedding as it's old & blue. It has been cleaned but remains a little discoloured. It's fairly old, with slight wear on centre stone. It is gold coloured with large blue stone surrounded by little White stones ( poss sapphire & diamonds, perhaps not real). I'd like to know what stamps mean, there are 3: 0 463 & what looks like 681 or 687.
I'd be grateful if anyone can shed any light. Many thanks.

I bought my wedding band and I was told it was 14karat and jewelry store. When I was home I saw marking inside ring and it says 14KB.... is that not the same as 14 karat. does that B have a meaning of it self. They tested ring in front of me to proof it was 14 karat, but am not sure if that B stands for something? Am kind of worried now that I got ripped off

The marking indicates that the piece is in fact 14K, the "B" indicates the country of origin, in fact Mexico. Unless your item is a "knock off", then you have the genuine article.
