Chrysler only has about 40000 workers left and they want to get rid of 23000 ouch, doesn't sound good for the company or the people left. Sounds like a lot of surprises will unfold Nov 4th or 5th.

Soooo... Why can't they offer some kind of retirement for the people who have been with the company for 25-29 years! That should count a whole lot more than 10 years!!!! They have yet to offer them anything except buyouts which, they'd be crazy to accept them since they are so close to retirement!!! Anybody know whats up with that? It seems so backwards.

I'm an ex-Chrysler employee who took a buyout back in January, when it became obvious Chrysler would file for bankruptcy. I was sick and tired of how Chrysler management treated us - there was no way I was going to spend the rest of my career working for a company that hated me (a UAW member) so much. When the government stepped in, I felt relieved for my former co-workers, but now Chrysler is still trying to get rid of 23,000 workers??? What was the bailout for? To save a greedy, horribly-mismanaged corporation, to bail out an Italian company and allow them access to American market, while getting rid of virtually all of American workers? I voted for Obama but what I've seen so far is him bailing out some of the greediest, most irresponsible corporations in the country, while doing nothing to help middle America, especially when it comes to saving jobs!
Many people label him a socialist, but to me he's starting to look like the opposite of Robin Hood, taking taxpayers money and just GIVING IT to corporate America without any accountability or guarantee to preserve American jobs!

God people, they are not trying to get rid of 23,000 workers, they are offering the deal to 23 000 workers. Two different things

True, that's how I saw it when I took the buyout!:)

Still, it allows an American corporation to profit in the long run by getting rid of American workforce. I think any taxpayer should be concerned about such a trend.

Well ok, but what happens if 23000 workers say ok? Will Chrysler let them go, I bet they will as they close down more plants and replace the workers with lower paid employees or with temps.

Exactly, see my post above - more likely, it will allow them to shift production to Mexico or import most of the product from Italy. The American corporation doesn't care where the profit comes from.

My prediction: Chrysler will eventually go bankrupt at the expense of some $15 billion in taxpayer's money and nearly all of the American jobs. When that time comes, the political talk will shift toward preserving the Chrysler name and the dealership network, both of which Fiat will acquire at firesale prices.

It really doesn't matter what the exchange rate is. Blobama doesn't want any American plants left open for the Chrysler company. Like the other poster said, "Fiat will buy the Chrysler dealerships at fire market rates and laugh their butts off all the way to the bank once they have replaced the American workforce with Mexicans and Italians.

WAKE UP AMERICA, WE ARE VERY QUICKLY BECOMING THE LARGEST 3RD WORLD NATION ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH!!!!!!!!! THE ONE IN CHARGE OF THIS PARTICULAR CHANGE IS BLOBAMA HIMSELF!!!!!!!!!!

To Paul: Yeah, you're right about the exchange rate, that's been the downfall of BMW and Daimler for the past few years. So no, I'm not that stupid - maybe Fiat will not IMPORT! their cars from Italy, but it certainly doesn't plan to have them engineered or manufactured in America while paying the current wages, otherwise Chrysler/Fiat would not be offering a buyout to 23,000 more workers.

If Chrysler would offered cash $$ and a car voucher with the SER, they would probably have alot more leaving instead of staying or transfering to other plants.

chrysler has 23,000 workers. They have offered every employ a buy out. Yes they would be in heven if we all took it. Just for the simple fact they would then hire all temps at half the wage we now make. They don't really expect everyone to take it, but everyone at least has the chance to.

Well if they had offered the 20+ year people that were left in St Louis and went to Kokomo some sort of grow in package I bet 95% would have left.

If they want to really get rid of people, they need to offer $175,000 plus a car or they can offer anyone with more than 15 or 20 years enough credited service months to get a full pension, I know I'd leave if they offered me my full pension, The stock market is doing alot better, the pension fund was underfunded last year at 79%, it's up to 95% funded, they money is there for us, they should retire all of us and let them hire their beloved 2nd tier, you don't want to mix the 2nd tier with the first teir, there will be alot of resentment from the 2nd tier doing the same work for less than half the pay with damn near no benefits and no pension, start over, offer a bigger buyout or instead offer a credit towards your pension and you will get the majority of the top tier to leave and since i know Chrysler PAYS people to observe and in some cases, post, on this forum, send the word to the CEO about my idea's, it's really cost effective if they did what i propose
