Worst Crisis Since '30s, With No End Yet in Sight

Full story: online.wsj.com

The financial crisis that began 13 months ago has entered a new, far more serious phase. Lingering hopes that the damage could be contained to a handful of financial institutions that made bad bets on mortgages have evaporated. New fault lines are emerging beyond the original problem -- troubled subprime mortgages -- in areas like credit-default swaps, the credit insurance contracts sold by American International Group Inc. and others. There's also a growing sense of wariness about the health of trading partners.

Bush, Paulson and Bernanke have put up $900 billion to stop the bleeding, but that may just be the ante. The next round of betting could sustantial sums of taxpayers' money. Will it work?...Yes, for sure, for everyone holding billions in bad financial paper.

Thank you, Bush/Cheney/DeLay/McCain and the rest of you corrupt Republican crooks who have turned the Grand Old Party into the Corrupt Old Party.

I thought Obama's plan to spend 15 billion a year on renewables and our energy independence over the next 10 years meant that a lot of money would be spent on that, but when I see these sums being flushed down the drain by Republican incompetence that does not seem like much.

The Democrats may not be perfect, but they look like angels in comparison to the Bush/Cheney/DeLay/McCain Republican disaster machine.

It's not as bad as the '70's.

Now, if you're talking about Government bailouts, inervention and nationalization - yes, it's the worst since FDR.

Dude, Texas has a lot of German Americans, especially in the Hill Country. Just look at the names of the towns - Fredericksburg, New Braunfels, Boerne. Hell, even San Antone was a majority German town in the 19th century.

I'll be voting third party on some downticket races, as always, but my vote in the persidential and congressional races sure the hell will be going to the Dems this time.

Without FDR's "bail-outs" as you call them, Americans would still be living in cardboard box 'Hoovervilles'. GWB comes about as close to FDR as drain cleaner comes to wine. Too bad few Americans are savvy enough in history to recognize the eerie similarities between Hoover's administration and Bush's administration. If they did they might be even more unnerved about the state of the nation than they are right now.

This is a tipping point for the US economy. We will be paying for this mess for the rest of our lives, as will our children and grand-children. Both the direct cost of the bailout and the impact on future growth. We were handed a strong economy by the last generation and squandered it. The last two administrations and Congress all share the blame.

This is never going to end for the current generations. This is the beginning. The marker will be band aided to fall upon the next regime.'Twill continue to a massive crash in 2012 which will include social security and medicare. Then there will be a desperate patching up agian. But 'twill spiral down into 2022 when it will collapse and die. America's problems extend globally, you know.

The world would have drastically changed by then into a form reminiscent of the past with a global empire politically termed power block and alliances- a totalitarian system.

There will be many wars over this as all jockey to emerge with the lion's share of the available resources.

People will despair and turn over and again to various mystery saviours and prophets, all of whom will seem like something genuine for a while.

There must be a massive scapegoating of some subset of global society such as persons of a certain religion. The persecution and killing of that religious group will relieve some of the population pressures but never enough of them.

This is done every time in human society. But that will not end the perplexity and trouble this time around, sorry.

I'm saying all this to say, brace yourself for a protracted period of unending global social unrest, financial devastation, multi-warring faction blocks untilizing the most "modern" weapons, ecological decay, pandemics and massive culling of human population density.

SO LET'S LOOK AT THE BOX SCORE. HOW DID THE PLAYERS DO AT THE END OF THE GAME?

Sleazy mortgage brokers: The winners. They walk away with the millions they made in the first half of the decade, and the defaults aren't their problem. "So long suckers, I'm off to buy another Lexus!"

Socialists: Feeling fine ... they are infused with new life and grand new avenues to extend government ownership and control of the country.

The bankers: Ended up OK after it all. Lost their shirts, but Bailout Ben Bernanke rides to their rescue using YOUR MONEY. If you and me ran a real estate Ponzi scheme like these guys did, you'd be in jail. But no, we couldn't do anything like that to the geniuses of Wall Street. Privatize the profits, socialize the losses.

Joe Q. Sixpack: Lost his house. Trashed his credit. Didn't get bailed out like the banks did. Oh, he'll be okay in a few years, because he simply defaults and walks away. You can't get blood from a stone ... the deadbeat always finds a way to walk away from the tab.

Taxpayers who made responsible decisions for themselves: Stuck holding the bag once again. If you're in this category, congratulations, you'll be paying the bills of criminals once again. Stop asking for justice, you're cramping others' style. Didn't you get the memo ... saving is for suckers.

Vermont candidate to prosecute Bush if she wins By JOHN CURRAN, Associated Press WriterFri Sep 19, 3:45 AM ET Lots of political candidates make campaign promises. But not like Charlotte Dennett's.Dennett, 61, the Progressive Party's candidate for Vermont Attorney General, said Thursday she will prosecute President Bush for murder if she's elected Nov. 4.Dennett, an attorney and investigative journalist, says Bush must be held accountable for the deaths of thousands of people in Iraq — U.S. soldiers and Iraqi civilians. She believes the Vermont attorney general would have jurisdiction to do so.She also said she would appoint a special prosecutor and already knows who that should be: former Los Angeles prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi, the author of "The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder," a new book."Someone has to step forward," said Dennett, flanked by Bugliosi at a news conference announcing her plan. "Someone has to say we cannot put up with this lack of accountability any more."Dennett and two others are challenging incumbent Attorney General William Sorrell, a Democrat, in the Nov. 4 election.Bugliosi, 74, who gained fame as the prosecutor of killer Charles Manson, said any state attorney general would have jurisdiction since Bush committed "overt acts" including the military's recruitment of soldiers in Vermont and allegedly lying about the threat posed by former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein in speeches that were aired in Vermont and elsewhere."No man, even the president of the United States, is above the law," said Bugliosi. The White House press office didn't respond to a request for comment Thursday. But Republican National Committee spokesman Blair Latoff denounced Dennett."It's extremely disappointing that a candidate for state attorney general is more concerned with radical left-wing provocation than upholding the law of Vermont," Latoff said. "These incendiary suggestions may score points among the most fringe elements of American society, but can't be settling for anyone looking for an attorney general."Anti-Bush sentiment runs deep in Vermont. It's the only state Bush hasn't visited as president, and one whose liberal tendencies make it unlikely he will.In 2007, the state Senate adopted a resolution calling for Congress to begin impeachment proceedings against Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.Last March, the towns of Brattleboro and Marlboro voted to seek indictments against Bush and Cheney over the war, and dozens of other towns voted at town meetings to call for his impeachment.Sorrell, who is seeking a sixth term, said he doesn't believe a Vermont attorney general would have the authority to charge Bush."The reality is, in my view, that unless the crime takes place in Vermont, then I as the attorney general have no authority under Vermont law to be prosecuting the president," Sorrell said.
