I would vote for Jesse Ventura if he ran. He seemed to make more sense than any of them.

Didn't Obama belong to the group that pushed through all these mortgage loans for illegals, unemployed, etc.

If you are out this way, have you seen the area across from the sewer plant, all homeless are gone. A few had their places neat, put in trees, etc but they are gone too. Did not see a big influx out at Keaau yesterday so maybe they headed for town.

What is your opinion of treasury bonds, tax free of course?

Great questions...your next wave of tourists coming into Waikiki will be years from now...maybe 5-10. Hilton can afford to wait out any recession....they are all about gambling. My people in Hawaii say adamantly that gambling will never get into Hawaii. I am not so sure, and am not tuned into that crowd because I don't gamble. I think there will be pressure to do it, out of panic to raise revenues...but not anytime soon... Pj what do you think on this one...Yes I like Waikiki, it is the US. That is worth plenty. I see a recession/stagflation lasting for 2- 5 years, depending on a lot of turmoil out there. Just now watching cnbc, you should watch that during these times if you can....guy was saying overseas that this is just a 'heroin fix" to a junkie"...the $700B , already $300B is in the pipeline to Bush's friends, and that massive inflation will be the result of this...worldwide. All currencies that tried to do this failed in all of history. First the markets will rally as we have seen, but other problems persist...like the banks are getting bailed out, but not one dime is going to the people who need it- us. Without that, you have an unsustainable kick, with no future. Short and medium turn is up and the public will feel OK, for awhile, then reality sets in as prices keep rising...their dollars are worth less and less. Since 1913, the beginning of the FED, the dollar has dropped by 97% of it's value through debasement and inflation. Bottom line...this bailout is NO solution. This stock rally is for the bank's benefit. It is a technical rally with little sustainability. The fundamentals on this one are simple to understand...nobody feels like buying right now...commerce will stagnate...and people are getting poorer re;jobs, income. So where does this go? It is a fix, that is all. They will have to keep inflating to keep the addict from crashing. The second stimulus package is being approved right now...more "fix" for us...This is now a world-wide phenomenon. They have just guaranteed inflation ...higher than you have ever seen in your life, within the next 2 years. Hyperinflation is building and you are going to here a lot about this soon. It takes awhile to manifest....say 6 months to a year+.
guru,

appreciate your insight once again, I know its tough to predict so far out but I like the 5-10 year time frame, cycles. Interestingly, I have heard time and time again, that gambling(namely the boyd group) will never come to hawaii. Like you I am not so sure too and it will depend on
what type of gambling will be allowed...most likely state lottery in the beginning. If the casinos ever come in, that will really shake things up....for better or worse. Sounds like you are right about the quick fix, no real solutions right now. thanks again.

Actually I am their protector as a friend informed me of a few guys planning to dognap one when he was young.
They love their Michael Vick chew toys.
We had one when I was about three...never bit me...not once. Great dog!

Thanks, yeah, this one is serious....you can't keep importing oil, exporting your manufacturing base, living off credit, spending like maniacs, working less and less, underfunding an already poor educational system, cutting jobs, importing foreign labor from devastated countries, conducting wars all over the globe, etc, and have a prosperous country. It is finally catching up to us, in real time. We all knew that it would happen one day. Now their "fix" is to inject more credit. Wake me up when this nightmare is over please. Start your garden now, and pay off everything you can. Act smarter than the masses...this is not going to be pretty. It all hits right after the election. War with Israel/Iran is also a very real concern.

I'll just chime in real quick about the sustainability of Oahu tourism. Let me just say as long as we continue to have the same dimwits in office, we're all fvcked. My plan would be to make energy independence a priority. Period. We have one of the highest resources of solar, wind and wave power at our doorsteps and we blow money on a stupid train. We need leaders with vision, not ties to special interests. We have the opportunity to become THE global leader in ecotourism. Build an island-wide network of bikelanes that can be used by not only bicycles but current and future personal electric vehicles. We have the best weather in the WORLD and we coup people up in an air conditioned train.****. We have 1/100 the bikelanes as Sweden - and they are frozen and dark 6 months of the year. Put solar panels on every single sunbathed roof. Install wind turbines on Lanai and the north shore, export to all providers. Generate power with tidal and wave systems. Build a waste to energy system to accept ALL our garbage. 90% of our electricity is generated by oil and we call ourselves "paradise". We need to focus on perpetuating Hawaiian culture, incentivize companies that embrace ACCURATELY, Hawaiian culture and allow tourists from all over the world to experience it. Keep our waters clean and give incentives to people that conserve water - i.e. charge people for the amount of gallons they actually use - not some arbitrary amount our dumb **** mayor thinks makes sense. Tourism is about 40% of our economy. If we don't do anything to change the way we do things here, we'll lose 50% of our visitors. I'm tired... in more ways than one.
Awesome post pj,

Damn, agree with so much of what you have said, but doesnt it sound like if Hawaii does go forward with energy independence, will there not be a tradeoff from one special interest group to another? I guess that is part of doing business, make the laws get passed and provide companies w/tax incentives. Ecotourism, I like that, bike lanes, personal elec. vehicles, all great ideas.....but can it happen? I am not sure if our current infrastructure supports these changes....everything is so constricted now that riding a bike is like playing russian roulette with your life. I support your thoughts on perpetuating "hawaiian culture" and each passing year, the hawaiian culture is dying. Now, when I look at Hawaii or Hawaiian culture, it is intermingled with so many other cultures that the avg tourist is confused as to what authentic Hawaiiana is. Take Polynesian cultural center, the fire and knife show is not hawaiian...it is more S. Pacific-samoa, tonga, etc. I believe Waikiki is still trying at least to promote some aspects of old Hawaii and with local entertainers some, like Raiatea Helm, Cazimeros, various hula halaus, etc, still perpetuate language and customs. keep up the postings pj.

Can I answer? We already have plenty gambling if you know where to look. Legal gambling? I believe we need it but the "old ladies" that run this place will never go for it. It will "cause there to be to many poor people." Tell that to the group that had their belongings hauled off by a bulldozer yesterday. Some of the most beautiful areas are out here past Makaha but are strewn with trash and not safe. I took one of my pitbulls out there yesterday to play and had to caution some tourists to watch themselves (they reminded me of my parents so I got involved.)
I hate to see the mess but would hate worse to see developers headed out that way.
I have not been to Nassau for a while but there were several casinos there when I was. The Atlantis is one of the nicest hotels, anyway was at that time. The owners wanted to put one at Ko'olina but of course that shocking idea was denied. Somebody in Nassau told me they have no welfare or unemployment. But Bahamians were not allowed in the casinos either.
We are constantly being bombarded with the news that Portland has a wonderful "train" so we should have the same. Do they have gambling? That would be a good argument.
Ive always wanted to go some carribean locale, so you got to go Atlantis? lucky sob. I cannot believe the bahamians werent allowed? I wonder why, if they didnt allow hawaii residents in our own casinos(assuming Hawaii did have), residents would be pissed, lol. I know about the illegals in town, but scary to go in not knowing if bust going to come down.

We will see, its only speculation as it unfolds, Iran and most of islam and terrorist wants Obama to win and Israel see Obamas support of Hammas as a threat to their homeland security. Most americans are clueless and ignorant of Obamas true friends behind the seen just like most americans don't know that the guy is a chimnney as a heavy smoker but the media won't show that.
So my fundamental or reasons why, Israel will not allow Obama in office as bombming nuclear facility in Iran will favor McCain and renewed the reality of Obamas support for Iran and Terrorist in Gaza and Lebanon. Its just a thought. This is how I speculate on the market. I stay away from american media as they are always bias with too much noise on the market and politics.
Obama is another Jimmy Carter who feel sorry for terrorist groups who hates americans and wants to free terrorist. Jimmy Carter is the reason why we became the laughing stocks in Tehran with our embassy. No wonder why he wants to talk and support Hammas. Obama will carry out a socialist agenda with his hatred of the white race as supported by Farakhan and Rev Wright. But so sad as most americans are just blinded by the economy that has weaken by the democrats agenda and support of Fannie and freddie.
What ever which way Israel will not sit back. The only negative part of that it will affect security in Iraq, but it will do much good for the security of our nation by removing Obama.
thank you tama for your thoughts, so obama is a chain smoker...I didnt know. I wonder what china, russia, etc will do if Iran is bombed?

Okay, Guru, I got stains in my bvd's already so here is a question to ponder, and this is worst case scenario. Would you ever consider living outside the U.S.? I heard countries like thailand, for example, allow residency upon establishing business,$$ or work visa at Singapore, etc. Did it ever cross your mind...
Mexico, Canada, Costa Rica....maybe part time residence? Just wondering. If so, what would be top 3 countries?

There is so much illegal gambling in hawaii we might as well regulate it and collect taxes. Las vegas has made a fortune off hawaiians.
That's right. Hawaii should build it's own Casino in Vegas, and call it Hawaii...give discount passes to Hawaiians, and give discount passes back to Hawaii for everyone who goes into the casino, again getting their tourist dollars. It would finance all of Hawaii. Send the bucks back home to Hawaii. No brainer. For 10% of the price of the the mufitrain...you would have tremendous bucks coming home to build green everything...again saving its citizens money. It would also give people in Hawaii a great job in Vegas. Let the people in Vegas finance our state. It would be a model for the whole world.

If you are from the mainland why would you want to buy a home in Hawaii if you could buy 2 for the price of 1 in California, 3 for 1 in Las Vegas, and 4 for 1 in Texas? Of course that's considering that the home is a brand new 4 bedroom in Honolulu.
