I'll just chime in real quick about the sustainability of Oahu tourism. Let me just say as long as we continue to have the same dimwits in office, we're all fvcked. My plan would be to make energy independence a priority. Period. We have one of the highest resources of solar, wind and wave power at our doorsteps and we blow money on a stupid train. We need leaders with vision, not ties to special interests. We have the opportunity to become THE global leader in ecotourism. Build an island-wide network of bikelanes that can be used by not only bicycles but current and future personal electric vehicles. We have the best weather in the WORLD and we coup people up in an air conditioned train. WTF. We have 1/100 the bikelanes as Sweden - and they are frozen and dark 6 months of the year. Put solar panels on every single sunbathed roof. Install wind turbines on Lanai and the north shore, export to all providers. Generate power with tidal and wave systems. Build a waste to energy system to accept ALL our garbage. 90% of our electricity is generated by oil and we call ourselves "paradise". We need to focus on perpetuating Hawaiian culture, incentivize companies that embrace ACCURATELY, Hawaiian culture and allow tourists from all over the world to experience it. Keep our waters clean and give incentives to people that conserve water - i.e. charge people for the amount of gallons they actually use - not some arbitrary amount our dumb ass mayor thinks makes sense. Tourism is about 40% of our economy. If we don't do anything to change the way we do things here, we'll lose 50% of our visitors. I'm tired... in more ways than one.

Great, great take guru. Makes sense to demolish and for Hilton to make another tower but can Waikiki sustain the visitor counts of early 2000's again? If not, Hilton would have trouble filling the current occupancies in the years to come. Do you feel that HTA can do anything to bring up the visitor counts now that Rex Johnson
has gone. Does Waikiki stand for value to the future tourist or do you think Waikiki has seen its best days. Lastly, do you foresee gambling coming in to Hawaii, either in Waikiki or down west side by Ko Olina? That last question for PJ, Guru, or even Tama? Thanks much.
Can I answer? We already have plenty gambling if you know where to look. Legal gambling? I believe we need it but the "old ladies" that run this place will never go for it. It will "cause there to be to many poor people." Tell that to the group that had their belongings hauled off by a bulldozer yesterday. Some of the most beautiful areas are out here past Makaha but are strewn with trash and not safe. I took one of my pitbulls out there yesterday to play and had to caution some tourists to watch themselves (they reminded me of my parents so I got involved.)

I hate to see the mess but would hate worse to see developers headed out that way.

I have not been to Nassau for a while but there were several casinos there when I was. The Atlantis is one of the nicest hotels, anyway was at that time. The owners wanted to put one at Ko'olina but of course that shocking idea was denied. Somebody in Nassau told me they have no welfare or unemployment. But Bahamians were not allowed in the casinos either.

We are constantly being bombarded with the news that Portland has a wonderful "train" so we should have the same. Do they have gambling? That would be a good argument.

They are the best investment and I have plenty of their food stored away, they do not eat "old roy" type food.

Actually I am their protector as a friend informed me of a few guys planning to dognap one when he was young.

They love their Michael Vick chew toys.

It is well known that the game rooms pay plenty to stay in business.
One of the owners paid big money (they used thr word forfeited) to keep his wife out of jail. This was in the Advertiser last week.

If we had any idea of the money that goes from here to Vegas, it would be mind-boggling. One of the most well known here had a 4 million marker paid off last year.

I had to laugh when politicians went there to study their rail. They probably wondered why it was not located out in some vacant desert area.

I agree with everything you say. I did just see on the news that the students at UH cannot even own bicycles as they are immediately stolen (mopeds) so I think those on bike trails would be sitting ducks.
I am tired too, sometimes I wish I was not the type to get involved, usually just leads to frustration. I put a big anti-you know who sign on my gate and friends thought the original sign had been vandalized when I spent a lot of time doing it myself. Go figure, why would any home owner support the lying creep.

Invest in Hawaii real estate. In ten years the Chinese will take it off your hands for many times what you pay for it today. The Chinese will be the money holders, and the US will be bagholders in ten years. Real estate will still be the best future investment, especially in Hawaii.

They have just guaranteed inflation ...higher than you have ever seen in your life, within the next 2 years. Hyperinflation is building and you are going to here a lot about this soon.
Uh, you do know that stagflation and hyperinflation are two opposite conditions, don't you?

According to the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT), tourism remains Hawaii’s economic driver, providing 172,000 jobsor 1 in every 5 percent of the Gross State Product, and generating $1.08 billion tax dollars to the state and county government, or 24.2 percent of the total state and county tax revenues.

Let those numbers sink in before suggesting that there is an easy way to "diversify" the economy.

Unless the goal is to cripple the economy, destroy quality of life and take Hawaii to the status of a pacific Islands backwater, you need to find an alternative industry that can equal or surpass tourism's economic contribution.

LESS reliance on tourism is possible and is a good thing. Replacing tourism as the number one economic contributor to the State is a silly statement. Tourism is and will stay the #1 industry albeit at a depressed level, for along time to come.

The truly scary part is that the next biggest economic engines in Hawaii are government and construction both of which are more pernicious than tourism.

Aloha Tama,
Do you think Israel will really bomb Iran again?
and before election day, it sounds farfetched but I guess it could happen. Wow, that is some prediction, I will keep an eye out for it. aloha
We will see, its only speculation as it unfolds, Iran and most of islam and terrorist wants Obama to win and Israel see Obamas support of Hammas as a threat to their homeland security. Most americans are clueless and ignorant of Obamas true friends behind the seen just like most americans don't know that the guy is a chimnney as a heavy smoker but the media won't show that.

So my fundamental or reasons why, Israel will not allow Obama in office as bombming nuclear facility in Iran will favor McCain and renewed the reality of Obamas support for Iran and Terrorist in Gaza and Lebanon. Its just a thought. This is how I speculate on the market. I stay away from american media as they are always bias with too much noise on the market and politics.

Obama is another Jimmy Carter who feel sorry for terrorist groups who hates americans and wants to free terrorist. Jimmy Carter is the reason why we became the laughing stocks in Tehran with our embassy. No wonder why he wants to talk and support Hammas. Obama will carry out a socialist agenda with his hatred of the white race as supported by Farakhan and Rev Wright. But so sad as most americans are just blinded by the economy that has weaken by the democrats agenda and support of Fannie and freddie.

What ever which way Israel will not sit back. The only negative part of that it will affect security in Iraq, but it will do much good for the security of our nation by removing Obama.

Just like Obama with only empty rhetorics with no substance, you tend to give no reasons but empty rhetoric. Obama will lose by November and I will let you keep your job because McCain is not gonna hate hate you just like he refuse to hate those who tried to kill him in vietnam.

You have been fed by the media bias that have blown this Obamaosama bubble into an out of control media frenzie. When it pops it will cause so much recovery for people like you who can't tell a con artist from a true hero. lol

Sorry buddy, get angry and get mad until reality bites you in the okole lol. And I will NOT say, "I told you so..."

Because you can't even handle the truth even if it was plain and simple.

Tama, it is said, "the brain is a terrible thing to waste". Now since you've achieved this so early in life, Obama's healthcare program will allow you to have an implant with full coverage.
Be assured that it will be a republican brain that is used. Have no fear, Obama is here. lol.

You are absalutely correct. And where do you think the money comes from to pay for our global medicaid?

Obama will tax your okole till you got nothing left in your 401k and your retirment funds empty.

But you still don't get it cause you are just caught up in the media hype of Obama bubble until one day when it blows up in your face and you will thank me later with your empty pocket. Take my words for it brudda you will regret it in the end because you live in a bubble rather than living in reality of who the real Obama is.

Westside: I try to have an open mind but cannot find one thing of substance that would cause me to vote for Obama. I cannot understand why the media has fallen so hard for his act. Actually I dislike everybody running for anything of significance. Hated Hilary but looking back, cannot actually bring myself to say she is better.
Convince me, please.

Come to think of it, not too many are in office that I like either. I was a supporter of Mufi and look how he turned out.

Completely agree with you, McCainwas not my first.

Considering Obama compare to 8 years of Buswhack. Lets just say Bush put too much attention on foreign issues and let the liberal control house pass bills that have gotten us into this economic mess.

I did not want Bush 8 years of neglect, but I will not want Obamas social agenda that will forsure strip this nation naked and vuneral to terror and bankrubt for life.
