Local Safeway workers threaten strike

With a 10% unemployment rate these people should be lucky to have a job. With a loss of 80 Mill Safeway may have start laying off workers and or closing stores.

I encourage Safeway employees to strike.

I encourage Safeway to deal with a strike the way Reagan did with the air traffic controllers. With the high unemployment rate right now, there are plenty of people needing a job that would be grateful to have one.

Considering the economic climate, locally and nationawide, I would say this is very poor timing.

Hey Steve, you ever notice how the company can't seem to keep good employees? There are a few good ones, but by in large,Safeway does not pay enough to make working there worth it. Regretably for you they can't just fire ALL the employees. See, that would be illegal. The employees are UNION. There is a reason that employees organize and join/form unions. an you guess what that reason is Steve?

The strike is really for the benefit of the UNION. The members are not benefiting from being a Union Member, because the Union have gotten too greedy and using the member fees on themselves and very little going back into the membership benefits. Go and strike, unemployed locals are ready to line up with applications at the store front and strike for as long as you can for the benefit of unemployed.

if the workers don't strike it will make them look weak to the modern day hitler steve burd. if u go with what steve turd wants eventually there will be no benefits for current workers and future workers. then everyone might as well move to mexico or some other 3rd world country. steve burd wants everyone to work for free anyway so he can shovel all the money into his families pockets.

These people have worked sick, during holidays when their family's are home, they put up with some of the most unlikabe customers and they work hard for their money. How would you like to start out at one amount and end up working for less through the years? The benifits are being cut and the wage going down how long would you not try to make it better if it was happening to you?

The only employees that have rights are union workers and the only group with jobs that Obama is supporting are union jobs. The Safeway employees should appreciate these protections while realizing that Safeway, like all retailers, are having serious problems paying the bills. Rising Health Insurance and Utility costs are killing Jobs.
Ask Farmington's City Council what they have done to lower consumers utility bills - Natural gas prices are at record lows yet City Counselors refuse to pass these savings onto consumers; stashing excesses from the electric utility into special accounts as private jobs are lost. Counselors have doubled prices for water service - saying they need to replace old lines, but are building new lines to nowhere. Also, Counselors have doubled garbage rates - saying garbage needs to be recycled, but then ask the public to do all the work.
All of these actions and inactions by your City Council continues to take its toll on private sector jobs. DEMAND CHANGE from your Farmington City Council or private business will continue to fail - leaving only the Walmarts that are City Council helped build.

I got screwed by working under a union job. The union makes companys mad for there bs demands that companies can't afford during these bad times. Due to the piece of crap union that controlled my job, I lost it. If they go on strike, I will be glad to step to the front of the line to apply for a job there. Safeway is a good company and I don't think they need a union to screw everything up. So I say please strike, I need your job.

Sick of Unions, You're full of it. There is no way you would work for seven dollars/hr with no benefits. You make more on welfare. If they strike, have fun. No one competent will be there to sell you your cigarettes and booze. You cannot survive working part time on seven dollars/hr. If the Safeway employees get sick or need public assistance, the people who pay taxes will foot the bill, not the corporations. Safeway is hiring right now. You don't need to wait for a strike to get a job. Come on down. If you can pass a drug screen-you're hired. Tell us all how your interview went. We're all behind you 100%. P.S. I won't hold me breath waiting for a responce.

I remember during the last recession in the 80's our local Albertson's went on strike. It ended up just closing and it was awhile before grocery warehouse opened. I would sure hate to lose our local Safeway stores. The West main Safeway already has Walmart to deal with.

And YOU will be the first one bitching about the conditions, low pay etc that is being argued today. It is a cycle with Safeway, Kroger and big boxes all over the country. This is an anti union town so I am not surprised by the ignorance. But if you have 8 hr days, weekends off holidays off, pensions, health care etc. thanks the union. All improved work conditions do not just "happen" They are fought for. Because you are receiving positive effects from the bargaining even though you are not part of a union. IGNORANCE IS SO DANGEROUS. By the way, Safeway, Kroger and all of these large corporations have made huge profits and their CEO's are still getting $$$$$$$ at the workers's expense.

Be careful that your union wasnt infiltrated,its common knowledge this is a deep recession/depression for some places.And historically hasnt been a good time to strike.They need to back off on wages,and work with safeway,safeway is in a bad way.They are having to charge 10.00 for a small steak thats after the card.You cant compete with sams or walmart so stop.You have to play the game for now,the tide will turn wal marts image is going darker all the time.People almost associate wal mart with the new world order.

Lay off the striking employees and hire new.

we at dominicks were fine before safeway took over. they have ruined dominicks a chain older than most. they have closed down close to 40 stores within 10 years. most of the good help is gone. we would have been even bigger today without safeway. our competition which is jewel owned by svu has taken most of our business. but thanks to the unions some of us old timers still have a job. the union is weak now but we still have them. if the union was gone safeway would make up excuses to get rid of the rest of the old timers. safeway is always looking for a way they can get rid of old timers. since most of what they thought have has failed they end up closing stores. then they force u to work in a store that u may not like. safeway needs to just sell the companies they already ruined and cut their losses. they knew rhat the companies they bought were union and that we had health benefits. did safeway actually think we would just give up our benefits when they took over ? did they think we were going to bow down to a crooked piece of trash like steve burd?

Bring back Fry's Grocery Store ..

i need job, but i like safeway...
