The mayor is working on it, he is building a rail system which between the stations and the rail cars can house thousands. Sorry to say but there is not a lot the government can do beyond what is already there. The down side to the current shelter system is you have to follow the rules..and many don't want to. The cheapest solution, charter aircraft to get those homeless who do want to work and buy a house to a market with jobs..where ever that might be these days. Those who just want to leech off the system well...tough love I guess.

"We don't have budget for it now," Gee told the group as it crowded into the mayor's reception room. No cash for the less fortunate, BUT plenty of YOUR tax payer cash for crony contractors, letter writing architects, p.r. mouth jobs, union bosses, campaign contributors (it's called recycling, "Go Green"). All you folks that were jammed up for HOURS AND HOURS on the Ala Wai Boulevard yesterday and today too, just focus all of your thoughts on Mufi. Enjoy the view. Look to the right and into the Ala Wai and envision: more mufi kukae.

Local people are homeless...meanwhile the immigrant Micronesian population receives millions of dollars in free healthcare and education benefits (courtesy of the hard-working, tax-paying people of Hawaii). Here's the solution.... every Micronesian family should take in one homeless person.

Everybody that are complaining about the homeless and for the Mayor to come up with a plan should take in one homeless family and then there would be no homeless problem. Its always NIMBY but not only walk the walk but talk the talk you idiots. There is no more land nor monies to house the homeless unless they're shipped to Flat Island off Lanikai or Kahoolawe where they can build their own settlements. I'm not being heartless or cold. All I'M SAYING IS THAT ALL THESE COMMUNITY ACTION PEOPLE SHOULD TAKE IN ONE FAMILY AND THAT WOULD MINIMIZE PART OF THE HOMELESS PROBLEM. nOTHING MORE AND NOTHING LESS.....

how about if we spend our money on the children and the mentally ill, and let the able-bodied adults we see camping on the beach & drinking all day work for their money? That might free up some money for those who can't help themselves. The state has spent $40 MILLION over the last few years on homeless shelters. Money's not the issue here, compassion's not the issue. While there are underlying structural weaknesses in our housing system, there are serious underlying issues in how we allow people to prey on us.

What you are doing sounds like a complaint. According to your rules, you got to take i a homeless person.

Maybe if they clack those pieces of wood together real loud, Mufi can hear them in Asia. In the mean time, set up some tents and trailers and invite all the b-u-m-s in the US, Mexico and the Philipines over (there can't be too many of them, right?).

Why don't the churches belly up and take some in. They are getting tax free property and buildings, have a lot more money than most people. Like St Andrews downtown gives free meals out but won't let them camp on their property, it shoos then away. Take them in and let them live in your buildings and sleep on your pews.

Why don't we let them live in the parks and on the beaches. There's alot of room for them there. I'm surprised Mufi hasn't thought of that yet. That would solve all our homeless problems and clear the streets.

Let them camp/live at UH if you are an example of what comes out of there.

The fact that they would march on city hall to make demands of the mayor when he isn't even in town pretty much sums up this bunch. Media stunts and "demands" do not solve problems.

This is done in many places. Watch the higher arrivals sent by mainland areas now that winter is here. Millions of dollars are spent housing those down and out but their numbers increase by the day. Cut off all the giveaways for micros and maybe they will return home, the land of unspoiled beaches, according to travel ads. Of course they have unspoiled islands, their undesirables are here spoiling Oahu.

Out past Makaha beach, a church has a huge resort on the hill while on the other side of the road are living the worst of the worst homeless.

This is the "homelessness industry" at work. Keep the homeless on the street so the poverty mongers can keep the donations rolling in. Defeating the "homelessness industry" before it gets a grip on Hawaii http://www.hawaiifreepress.com/main/ArticlesM...

Maybe if the city hadn't allowed so many houses be converted into B&Bs and TVUs there might be more homes available for the population. Before anyone tries to tell me that these folks can't afford those homes, please consider this. The person who could afford to rent the place was displaced when the home was purchased for one of the above uses, that displaced renter had to look elsewhere and probably displaced someone else further down on the economic ladder which sets off a chain reaction until the displacement cycle hits the lowest economic levels. Those at the very bottom are squeezed out. Returning all those converted units to the housing inventory would certainly be a big step in solving the affordable rental problem. Some estimate it could be as much as 3000 units although 2000 is probably more realistic. Please don't confuse those folks who are homeless because they can't afford the rents with the chronics.

If you asked them to throw their trash in the proper recepticles, I'm sure they would. Problem solved. I should be mayor.
