Momentum for passage picked up mightily after President Bush earlier Wednesday dropped his opposition to the bill just hours before a scheduled vote in the House.

Once again, irresponsible people are rewarded. This is the reason people don't take responsibility. Why would they, when it turns out they can do what they want, whine about it, and then the Democrats come along and fix it for them. In the meantime, the people who didn't apply for home loans because they realized they wouldn't be able to make the payments, are now left out in the cold, and stuck with having to help pay for the irresponsible lenders. What has happened to this country?

The mortgage ind.got greedy, there were no doc loans that you didn't have to prove income. There were loans to undocumented aliens with a form that they could get, unfortunately I don't recall the #. The Gov. is at fault. They set guidelines. But as we all know were dealing with a bunch of deal makers. Look at Chicago. God I just hope we are teaching the children the proper way to live their lives. But just look at the news. Unless something happens SOON we are F***ed.

the goverment should stay out of this the homeowners bought homes they knew they could not afford let them suffer the consequences of not being responsible with thier money . Maybe this failure will teach them to buy what they can afford and not rely on other people to pay thier bills

I especially liked the last bit about having approval of pay packages for executives..... Say WHAT??? They should be forced to return any and all previous bonus packages. They should be looking at jail time for theft! I know it won't happen as they will probably get rewarded for not abandoning the mess they allowed.

The other thing that is amazing is that Crookgress allows this. Its acceptable. I wish I had a job that I could screw up and get a bonus or golden parachute.

Simply put....They couldn't afford a house. They bought a house anyway. Now they expect, and want, government to pay for it.

Well, it's the hardworking tax payers who are stuck with the bill. When people signed their mortgage papers, they are supposed to know a little bit about what they got themselves into. Yes, it's the mortgage industry who conned some of these people into signing their papers, but those people are also responsible for putting their names on the dotted line. I guess it's OK to be stupid because the government will bail you out no matter what. This is just the tip of the iceberg of what this country has become with the Democrats controlled Congress. If Obama ever gets elected, it'll be a lot worse, as tax payers will have to shell out a lot more to bail out all kind of causes.

waste of money..why not just burn the cash...the tax payers always have to come bail out everyone, but nobody helps the tax payer when he loses a job, 400,000 people who should probably of never been given a loan, what about everyone that works hard and pays on time, what break do they get, forget these bums, someone needs to be kicked out of office.

I understand New Zealand is what USA used to be and many young professionals are considering emigration - they are fed up with the polital and economic chaos, the deterioration of American values, the corruption, the greed of our business and civic leaders who do not care for America only their individual parties, their individual pockets. What happened to honor, integrity, honesty? What happened to patriotism?

Yeah... my neighbor is one that should not reap the benefits of the buyout. Rather than pay his mortgage, he'd rather buy cars and fancy "toys." He's been up for foreclosure twice and was able to scrape enough together to hold on for a few more months.

This is definitely not fair to those individuals who work hard and are responsible enough to read papers before signing and then make the subsequent (required) payments.

And the government is continuing to encourage homeownership through tax incentives among people who can't afford it. Haven't we learned anything?

And guess who was supporting this legislation big time? The NAR! I was getting regular reminders to pressure my legislators to support this.

Why do we always have to bail out these companies who make bad decisions? The people that got into these mortgages should have know what they were getting into. Because I'm responsible I have to pay again for the greedy financial companies and the irresponsible. A Democratic congress will always make the hard working people of this country pay for the stupid and lazy. Enough is enough. I would like to see how much these financial companies donated to these politicians. One financial company showed there C.E.O. made 32 million.
No wonder

All great comments - I completely agree with the question: "WTF happened to personal responsibility"? When I took on my mortgage, I knew what I could afford, skipped the trip to Disney and new car, White Sox season tickets, overnight downtown for New Year's Eve, etc... But not my free-spending neighbors who are in trouble. I'm paying for it now anyway!

What total BS. By the way, no wonder the Congress approval rating is in the low teens. Ugh.

This is a good sign. I heard 1 in every 170 houses in this country were in financial troubles.
Now, it is up to these people to go and seek the help they need. We hear all about this "help" but when people are in financial troubles they don't want to talk about it - they just let it go.
Information needs to be posted in newspapers WHERE these people need to go get help!!!
I have heard many parents stating - my child should have never been given a loan to buy that townhome or house - and they are bailing them out of their financial troubles.
People don't get all this mumble/jumble being sent to them in the mail - they don't understand the terms - they don't read the fine print and it is causing more troubles.
They don't want to hire a lawyer because that costs money - they are stuck - what is being done to help those people?

You know what gets me? The loans would be capped at $625,000.(*holds head*) Let me get this straight....I have to bail out someone and for my trouble, I get to live where I do, in my paid-for house (because we worked our collective rear ends off and ate lots of macaroni) and someone too lazy or stupid to understand the risks of ownership, or someone who lied about their income gets to live in a nicer house??? Talk about gaming the system........
