This is an excellent article Mr. Rennie and goes to the heart of the matter. Senator Dodd and his wife, indeed, did get special treatment and it is a conflict of interest for him to remain on the Senate Banking committee, yet, alone serve as its chairman. This serves as example of the hyprocracy of those who tout "ethics" as their mantra.

If he was a Republican This would have been front page news everyday. but it shows the twisted mind of the Courant. We know the Courants in Dodd;s pocket and any other Democrat. This man received a favorable deal and he should be removed from his position, And I also hope he is voted out of office next elect but I know the Courant will be behind him 100%

C'mon Kevin, Dodd doesn;t have time for this. He needs to scramble to make sure his pals at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac don't see their joints shut down, no matter what it costs the taxpayers or how far it sinks the dollar. This what you get when the Banking Committee chairman abandons his post in the midst of the worst financial panic in decades

Kevin, thank you. Someone at the H.C. investigated this. QUESTION this is the hottest story around why would YOUR paper not investigate this? It has everything local and fed angles, huge bailout of the banks PLUS the angle that Milt mentioned that Fannie and Freddie have since 1989 made Sen. Dodd thier NUMBER ONE contributor of campaign funds! AND NO STORY FORM COLIN M. AND THE REST OF THE PAPER. WHY? KEEP DIGGING - WERE THE NOTES AND MORTGAGE RECORDED? IF NOT THEN COULD BE IRS ISSUES OF UNRECORDED INCOME.

Thanks to Kevin

Note to Hartford Courant: This is the type of reporting you should be doing in the main paper. You should be calling for Dodds resignation as you did with Deluca. This is much worse! If you did, your readership and ad revenues would be up!

Hokum and a hatchet job. I suspect that there are a few Republicans that do not want Dodd on the ticket as VP because of it's impact on the ever-shriveling New England GOP. This is an honorable man with an honorable record. Those that try to slice and dice are of the same ilk as the Swift Boaters.

Nice to see a MSM guy NOT genuflect to the Prince of Perks and Privilege. Dodd is the new poster boy for term limits.

I agree with this excellent article. This is a major scandal that is not getting the scrutiny it deserves. Sen. Dodd's conduct is reprehensible especially since he is the head of the Senate Banking Committee. If the citizens of CT had any guts, there would be a strong movement for his recall from office. The self-dealing by Sen. Dodd is breathtaking and is refusal to release documents is totally unacceptable.

Still left out of the equation is information to what Dudds credit score was at the time, and his debt to income ratio...This plays a huge part in determining what your interest rate would be on a Real Estate Loan...Me thinks that something with Mr. Dudd really stinks!!!

You are nuts...Dudds showing in Iowa, is evidence that this guy couldn't be any assistance as Obamas VP Candidate...Except for maybe his albino appearance offsetting the whole color issue...

Like so many politicians Dodd doesn't need to provide documents to the hoi polloi. He has a lock on his senate seat so why should corruption worry him? It makes me sick that Dodd freely accuses others of violating the public trust when he and his wife are just hogs feeding at the corporate trough.

What amazes me, and probably shouldn't, is that Senator Dodd is all over the networks all the time. He is always presented as knowledgable and in command of the facts concerning monetary policy and all things financial. I never see him challenged, rather, he is annointed as the one who can give us straight information and explain to us why things are the way they are. Especially when it comes to bashing Bush & the Repubs. Everyone should have a Senator like this, who is adept at pointing out the fallacies of the administration & the other party while climbing up on the pedestal of purity for the national audience. God bless Senator Dodd.

what amazes me is that there is such furor to get at the facts about dodd and a relatively insignificant mortgage deal (not to say he shouldn't have been more careful). but are all these folks who want truth and transparency asking any questions about how we got into this illegal war that is costing trilling, 1000's of US deaths, 100's of thousands of iraqi deaths, etc etc. i suspect all these demanders for truth are pretty quiet about that. as is rennie the war supporter himself.

The Democratic Senate authorized the war because Saddam had: 1)broken 17 United Nations resolutions, 2)was firing rockets daily at US planes, 3)was sponsoring terrorism by giving $25,000 to Palestinian families to compensate them for their loss of children who were homicide bombers taking innocent Israeli lives, 4)had children who were feeding innocent girls (alive) to starving dogs, lions & plastic shredders after they had brutally raped them (some were kidnapped from their own weddings), 4) was creating instability in an already unstable middle east & 5) proclaimed he had weapons of mass destruction. If he didn't have them he sure as heck wanted them as evidenced by the 500 tons of yellowcake recently, secretly, removed from Iraq & given to Canada. I'm glad you asked the questions, there are your answers. Didn't Senator Dodd vote for the war? Now, back to the question at hand, why is a Senator who is the chair of the Banking Committee in the US Senate flirting with the head of the company who has become the poster child for the greedy companies who perpetrated the mortage mess, according to Senator Obama?

The Iraq war costs about $150 B/year. The financial markets are losing this per day thanks to the incompetence of Dodd & co. Are trillions of real lost dollars "insignificant" when Democratic senators and their Democratic party hack friends at the big mortgage companies are the , ahem "responsible" parties?

Too bad Dodd isn't a republican or the media would have a story to run on cycle for a month. Just amazing how Dems kep getting away with things just by saying it's no big deal. At least this reporter actually dug into this, although nothing will happen. Plenty of Dems looted the system in the overall mortgage meltdown.

Not to mention Chuck Schumer who caused a $5 billion run on IndyMac bank.Yet wekeep hearing the Dems will expand their majorities in congress despite a 12% rating..What the hell is wrong with people?
