to jference: and you are another one. I guess the dumb folks don't know who Moyers is and don't flock (apologies to sheep and geese) to this topic to vent their ignorance and hatred as much as they do whenever the name Obama is mentioned; that that leaves room for intelligent, informed people on this site. I may have to read all the comments, if I keep finding so many of them! I read your comments on other subjects - sometimes it's unclear what was said before you replied, but one can get the gist of it. McCain's so-called "senior moments" really interest me -- the one where Joe Lieberman had to correct him about Iran training Al-Qaida (KO calls Lieberman McCain's walking correction-"adviser (he used a more zippy word).. I don't care if KO is not a "respectable" news source, he is for purposes of enjoyment! And I am impressed by the very bright lady from Air America (Rachael Maddows, is it?) who pinch-hits for him -- too bad she isn't from Minnesota!) The most recent McCain "senior moment" was when he referred to the "Iraq-Pakistan" border. KO had big maps to do show-and tell for that one! Also, why do you think that McCain and his people "went ballistic" over Wesley Clark's refusal to adore his great military service? Was it because of all the ads he's running that trade on his Vietnam experience? Perhaps McCain doesn't want anyone asking about the Forrestal fire? or the lost planes he had been flying? or what else, I wonder? I can't get the great version (Lawrence Harvey-Angela Lansbury) of the Manchurian Candidate out of my mind. At least, even if he was totally honorable and not brainwashined, the POW experience would naturally make him "
mad as hell" (to use the phrase from Network, so I hope it doesn't get censored). That would explain why he is said to have such a hot, uncontrollable, over-the-top, profane, loud, almost violent temmper -- according to reports by several other Republican Senators who know him and were with him when these outbursts (allegedly) happened. I don't see how Cochran or former Senator Smith(NH?) would have any reason to lie about it - nor Kyl nor Cornyn either. They are all arch-conservatives themselves, and never would want to help a Democratic nominee.

I would have to agree that the general tone of discussion on this particular topic is quite a bit higher than most I have seen, and in some cases, taken part in.

I wonder if it is because Moyers represents PBS?

Occam's razor suggests, however, that the topic itself is convoluted enough that the typical neocon trolls cannot get a foothold from which to launch their endless attacks on reason and patriotism.

As far as the good Senator McCain goes, I must say I shudder to think about an ex-POW with anger issues with his finger close to the Big Red Button...

To Alvira:

Personally, I am very concerned as many others are as well about our economy. If the right deal comes along, consider taking it. It must meet your expectations though, not someone else's. You have probably made the best choice you could under the circumstances. You are wise to keep an eye on it and by the way, I hope any attorney that you use is one that knows his job well enough to work in your best interest. There are plenty of good attorneys out there, but like anything else, finding them now is critical. Not to worry you, but I have already been through this with other clients who ended up coming back to us because of the poor service that was rendered to them. Hang in there for now and make your plans accordingly.

That all sounds well and good but what are the realities of this? Yes, some people were irresponsible with both lending and borrowing. So now there are foreclosures. The neighborhoods that are abandoned leaves a huge hole in the economy, especially on state and local levels. No property taxes being paid. Services take a hit. Or increase the property taxes on the responsible people who have either borrowed within their means or have paid for their home out right. Also in the Moyers report they talked about renters. What does a renter do when the building has been foreclosed -- they too are out on the street trying to find another apartment or house to rent. They were being responsible, renting a place they could afford, paying rent on time but still find themselves out on the street.
And who get the bail out? The people who invested in Wall Street. If you are an investor you should assume some risk. Did the government bail out all the people who laid down bets on Big Brown and lost? Wall Street is a gamble just as much as going to the track or playing Vegas.
I totally agree with you about Wall Street. It is gambling. You invest money in stock, its just like spinning the wheel. The bigger the risk the higher the return. When you loose, too bad. I say NO to any of these taxpayer bailouts.

Since Reagan we have been moving in that direction, the pace is accelerating and, as bad as the media and the politicians are saying it is, I'm absolutely sure it is much worse, after all, these are the same people who promised a cakewalk and WMD's in Iraq.

My personal perspective, which has not changed since 2001, is that the war on terror is a distraction from the war waged on the American lower and middle classes by the wealthy elite. The goal of the systematic erosion of the bill of rights, the constitution and government oversight of corporations was to eliminate the ability of the non-wealthy to address the power elite. To stand up and speak out in any way shape or form in the united states is to be labeled a terrorist. What were acceptable forms of civil disobedience in the past are now identified as terrorism, and supported by both parties. Our country is lost but we have not found out or ben waked out of our collective trance / slumber. The lying bastards in office have sold our forefathers and the generations after us down the river for gold. I hope they rot in hell, and soon.

People, you need to understand the ELITE know you better then you know yourselves.

The elite have known for over 2000 years, that man, given economic freedom will misuse that freedom to live in 7 day a week, 24 hour a day, drunk orgies, rapeing women and making babies that the men do not feed or pay child support for.

SO..the elite created PYRAMIDS to keep all the men working and enslaved so they were too tired to be in 24/7 drunk orgies after a 70 hour week in the mines.

Now circa 2008, the elite keeps men enslaved in cubicles and jobs 70 hours a week so the men are too tired to for a 24/7 orgy and breed babies they do not support.

Face it, 97% of men do not think, they do not think at all except to contemplate the lint in thier navels, eat cold pizza and drink beer.

Like the world does not know what men do when not enslaved 40 to 70 hours a week by King Economics.

When man advances above his lust he will be freed.

To Thoreauing - and I thought my comments were hard to follow! Aside from confusing me by being a bit heartless on one post (most schools don't teach people enough either about ethics or personal economics, let alone big-time economics)- please don't blame the victim), and very kind on another, I mostly find your intellect and information-gathering to be very advanced. I my sources are mostly CSPan, pbs (Moyers, especially) and a variety of miscellaneous. So I wonder about your sources. They seem very sophisticated, and international. Not standard USA newsfare. That is a question, not a criticism. Please cite some good sources sometime. My problem is that I am very skeptical about almost all sources, and need to see debate or hearings myself on CSpan, and make up my mind which alleged "facts" to accept depending on which Senator or Congressman I respect.(Inslee, Whitehouse, Boxer. and and others.) Also I read your profile - I trust you are familiar with the duet from the Pearl Fishers. I found several versions of it on youtube, and people making comments were arguing about which was the best version. I love the old and great ones, of course, but will listen to others. Why does everything have to be a contest?- can't several be excellent?- why can't variety (above a minimum level) be a good thing in itself?-from Groban to Paul Potts to Domingo to that nice guy who had an accient that hurt his throat and hadn't sung publicly for 11 years and won over the nasty crowd on one of the popular talent shows? Also, do you know Stephen Crane's poetry? My favorite poem is DT's FH. For anyone who can decipher that, you are welcome to it -- too beautiful for most cynics and urban-lovers.
To Lynnette,
I apologize if my posts appear coded, it is not my intent to mislead or confuse. Thank you for your kind words about my cognitive abilities that I can assure you are debatable within my inner circle but thank you nonetheless. My sources of information are the same good choices as yours but as in every case they warrant a personal litmus test fleshing out the truth. Facts are manipulative so they are often suspect as to their relativity and soundness. About Sen. Babs Boxer- she’s a fresh face with controversy on the hill among the more somber cranky curmudgeons in the senate. I like her. "Au fond du temple saint" du Les Pêcheurs de Perles, Oui. J'ai bien. Le concert vous a-t-il plu? Yes, I enjoy the duet from the Pearl Fishers and opera in general. Maria Callis is one of my more favorite artist. Une femme apparaît! Je crois la voir encore! Dylan Thomas is also a favorite. I didn’t grow up on a farm as much as I would have liked to, so the ocean has been my respite and reflection. Que rien ne nous sépare!

I disagree. This is not about the Facist Globalist of Multinational use of the dollar as a better means to purchase by being low in value, it is about the American peoples loss of 50% of the value of the dollar since Bush took office. If a person bought a home when the market was at its peak ( housing) for 1 million, it is now worth 500 thousand. By the end of 2009 it will have incurred a negative equity of 63%, and by 2010 a negative of 90%.
Stay tuned to food prices by January 09.
and what lesson do we learn from this? you buy a house to live in, not make a profit from the next sucker.

This started with the creation of the Federal Reserve, an unconstitutional institution, in 1913 in the dead of night. Both political parties are owned by the central bankers. Both parties are responsible. Your vote does not matter, elections are only held to create the illusion of choice. Both Oboma and McCain answer to the central bankers.
Well said. The Federal Reserve is not owned by the United States government. It is owned by the same people that own and control the major news media, oil companies, and most large corporations. Bank loans and debt are nothing more than keyboard entries at a computer. Bank loans do not consist of money backed by gold or silver. People are stupid enough to believe they're actually borrowing real money from banks when in fact it's just a paper promissory note. Our national debt is based on credit, which means it's money created out of thin air.

Abolish the Federal Reserve and send the freeloading banking crooks to Guantonamo Bay. Give the monetary system back to the people and let it operate like it is to constitutionally supposed to under Article 1, section 8 of the U.S. Constitution.

Savages was a term used by white settlers to refer to native american people. They did not understand that we just wanted to be left alone to live like our ancestors had lived for thousands of years. Its a story that you dont find in most history books. But if you want a example of useing ones wealth and power to take from those who dont have it, Its a history worth learning about. Bury my heart at wounded knee by Dee Brown is a good book to start.
