From the article: "You've got an opponent who has the capacity to reach millions of people with a click of a mouse and there's no fact-checker. They can say whatever they want," he said. "We need to engage in a far better education process. People need to know … that 98% of people who work in the entertainment industry make $55,000 a year. They're not moguls and they're not walking red carpets." So, let me see if I have this straight. The "star" makes millions on their performance in a movie, and the rest of the grunts make $55,000 a year, and it is the "consumer" (movie watcher) who is responsible for this and who should pay the penalty? Or feel guilty? What? They aren't "walking on carpets"? The movie industry makes money at the box office. When that well run dry, they make money off of the DVD. When that well runs dry, they sell the rights to a network who then broadcast the movie on TV, which is then free to the viewer as advertisers (corporations) sponsor (pay for) the broadcast. So where exactly are they "losing money"? Because somebody happened to record the performance, uploaded to the internet so that others can see it for free? Do they have any actual numbers as to how much revenue is lost to those viewers? Or is this a grab toward a new audience in order that nobody can ever watch the performance without paying for the privilege? If I buy a DVD and then "loan" it to several friends, will they try to attach some sort of charge to this transaction, since the friends will now get to watch for free? As usually, I don't believe that our legislators have thought this one through.

Allowing government interference in the last bastion of true freedom by moneyed interests and overpaid studio executives and musically illiterate rockers and (c)rappers is a slippery slope. Why should the people give up their freedom for these degenerates?

If you make the music or the movie then you should make the money from it. A 3rd party shouldn't profit from your work, and we shouldn't ever buy pirated music or movies. Just my opinion .... I don't want someone else getting paid for the work I do....

Reality remains the same no matter how much the media changes the lighting. The entertainment and software industry, and any others have been raping the consumer for many years. Piracy in its definitive form may seem unethical. But the drive behind the reality of it is not. If anything, the modern act of piracy is nothing but a show of retaliation against a tyrannical corporation filled with rich assholes who think they can put out any kind of product they desire without trying to meet the demands of consumers. Microsoft is the best example of all. They are notorious for creating software that doesn't work or doesn't serve the consumer well at all. And it usually has a high price on it. Just think about how piracy has saved the asses of many. It's a form of protection for the consumer. It gives us back our power. That makes it the most important thing in our lives at this time. People playing "pushover" has made corporations so powerful they have lost all ethics. You can't pay a man triple figures without him wanting more. Bigger vacations, better cars, fancier homes. It all means the need for more money to pay the caterer. Therefore, the business becomes a money machine and doesn't serve the consumer at all. This is why we see so much money being poured into marketing lies about a product just to get it to sell. In the old days, a product sold itself because it delivered. America has become the biggest dried up pile of crap all because we have played "nice" and allowed the rich people to rape us and the rest of the world. Piracy has changed it and it is still changing it. Therefore, I and many others will continue to keep it alive. Then, maybe the mafia style suit and ties will eventually go broke and leave the entertainment industry, giving back all control to the creative entities that made past decades great. Then the consumer will be glad to buy a product again. But for now, I wouldn't spend a dime on what the world is producing. It isn't worth it where I come from.
