What an idiot to post this. Coal fired power plants are a staple.

Would take 3-4 decades to replace if started now.

China is kicking our butts because they have copied the fossil fuel power and heavy industry that made America great. Environmental regulations killed U.S. industrial might and we lost millions of jobs too. Bring back American industrial output or look forward to more job losses, more government debt, and higher world pollution under Red China's exemptions from environmental controls.

Let's be honest.
If you are near large coal deposits, it is probably the best energy choice for your utility companies.
Other parts of the US needs nuclear power, badly.
If they never start building anything, we will never have anything (as many of you have already said).

Considering Obama has said he'd bankrupt the coal industry, maybe Iria has taken some Pepto-Bismol.

We can't make iron or steel without tons of coal. Obama has no idea the consequences of his actions. How can he with Pelosi to his right and reid to his left?

Considering half the nation's electricity is generated with coal, that might be a bit difficult to do.

The article stated:

"Other utilities, though, have sworn off coal for the time being and are eagerly embracing alternative energy. Xcel Energy, for example, has erected 274 cloud-colored turbines on the gusty plains of northeastern Colorado. It gets about half of its electricity from coal, but it also draws more of its power from wind, almost 3,000 megawatts, than any other utility."

Does North Carolina have no wind these days ?
Didn't the Wright brothers choose North Carolina (Kitty Hawk) because of the great, steady winds along the shore ?
This Duke Energy CEO can't replace a dinky 0.8 GW coal power plant with wind power ? Puhlease.

Even in Texas, T Boone Pickens is working on a wind farm project in Texas that will be the biggest wind farm in the world when completed. Pickens is a visionary, especially for an ex-oilman. His Pampa Wind Project is expected to eventually have 4 Gigawatts (GW) of wind power in the next 5 or 6 years.(1 GW by 2011). Texas is now the largest wind power producer in the U.S., surpassing California recently.

Even China is planning to build 80 GW more by 2020, which is 20 times the size of Picken's wind farm.
Of course, by 2020 the rest of the U.S. might build much more than 76 GW: 8.3 GW was built in 2008 alone, which was 42% of all new electric generating capacity in 2008.

Can't North Carolina do better than primitive coal technology ? What's the problem ? Doesn't North Carolina have plenty of smart people these days around Research Triangle ?
Join the 21st Century, Duke Energy.

Even the Queen of England, representing a many centuries-old institution, is getting with the times:

This is all pre obama but the obama worshipers will try to give him the credit.
Much like the ethusiastic Germans gave Hitler credit for saving them from capitalism.
