Think about the farmers. They need big trucks to haul. Tractors, too. What about their field machinery. It all runs on diesel. We're talking about $4.60 per gallon. An average tractor will fill up at a cost of $400.00 a pop. That will last one day. That's just one piece of machinery. Yes, some crops are going up in price, but not near enough to help the farmers break even.
Then we get to pay more at the stores to cover the shipping costs for the trucks that haul the product. That's diesel, too. You're getting socked more than just filling up your own vehicle.
Driving through the Morley area today, I notice an Amish farmer standing on his plow being pulled by horses. I think I better start hanging out with these guys......

I was just kidding about the bottles & cans.
I let my wife & son take them in when they have enough.
Your right though, if I used my brakes to stop and grab a can or two, then had to gas on it hard to get back into traffic?
I then will have burned much more gas than I could prchase with the money from the bottles & cans.
I do not stop for that fact. Let someone else have them.
Let people on bicycles get them and pray that they don't get hit.

Less than a week ago, gas here in Holland was $3.999. Might as well call it $4.

My truck hasn't been started up all day. That's one of the nice things about being retired, not having to drive to work. A tankful lasts me quite a while now. My miles driven has been cut by almost 2/3.

So we are screwed.....
No, not really. We just have to adapt and change. I mean the automobile is really only about a 100 years old and the idea that everyone should own one didn't really catch on big until after WWII, despite the model T. The idea of "commuting" other than on public transport is less than 60 years old. "Suburbs" didn't surface until after WWII. Remember one car garages on houses? That was reality until the 70's. So this idea that we need to have two or three vehicles and commute a hundred miles a day back and forth to work and run our kids to any and every event is really only 1 or 2 or at most 3 generations old. Not really that long. To look at it realistically we tried this "experiment" of suburban living and using lots of fuel, and the experiment didn't work.

Yeah, the 60's were great--but we were young, almost innocent. Didn't have to do any serious work. Crashed wherever. Hitchhiked. Then Manson and Bundy made us all afraid. Woke up one day and everyone dropped back into the system--Maybe they were posers. I hope they were able to pass on the hippie ideal of simple living to their kids. Maybe the Green Movement is it, I don't know. Maybe there are some still true & can use the sytem instead of being used by it. I'm old and cynical.

That would only be possible if your township would even let you have one. Remember, these are the people who think TV antennas are ugly. I've already read about townships that felt the need to "address the issue" of wind turbines. A wind turbine coupled with an electric car that didn't cost more than the turbine would be great for the driving that I do.
Maybe if I could have it look like a telephone pole or a tree. Up here in the woods, outhouses, antennas, outside burners and massive amounts of junk in yards have not been an issue. But you do have a good point Taz.

It's hard to make a wind turbine blend in with the background as it has to be above the tree tops to be effective. I have a 44 foot tower next to my house that is quite unobstusive as the trees are taller than the tower so the tower tends to blend in with the trees. Just one of the antennas on the tower sticks up above the trees.

There was a time when having a TV antenna on the fouse was considered a plus as that meant that the homeowner could afford a TV. Then, with the advent of cable, suddenly antannas were "ugly" and a sign of being too poor to afford cable. Subdivisions that prohibit outdoor antennas strongly promote the cable systems and their steady increase of rates. These same subdivisions also often prohibit parking a vehicle outside in the driveway overnight. It has to be in the garage.

Some subdivisions also prohibit clothesline poles. Good grief, I started hanging laundry out to save a little energy. I would think that anything that saves energy would be encouraged.

Everybody is parking in line with their engines idling thinking they will save $5.00 if their getting 25 gallon of gas???

Then you have those that will look up where the lowest priced gas is and will drive 10 miles round trip through the city.

What did you save???

Your engine running, wearing out as time goes on.

Your tires wearing out as well as your brakes.

What did you save???

Go to the closest station to where you pass to or from work or a store if you need it. Pay $0.25 cent more per gallon for the most direct route and you will be saving yourself $$$

Don't let yourself be sucked into thinking you are saving if you have to drive way out of route to save only the value on the pump.

Your paying for it in the long run anyway!

I topped off last night after work at the speedway by there. I didn't have to wait in the line that they had there when I drove by. Thanks for the advice though.

Your welcome.

I really was not giving advice.

I was more stating fact of what I hearing some of the thought process of people I work with. Several fellow employees leave for lunch each day, when they return at times, they state that gas prices have increased since morning. They normally state that so & so gas station is still at morning prices. Then there are several employees that state they better jump in their car to go fill up to create a savings.
Its kind of funny do you agree?
I personally do not leave for lunch. I let the food truck bring me a hot meal. Yes I may spend a couple dollars more to receive this service, but I save with not using my battery to start my bike, not burning my gas to warm it up, not putting myself in harms way a third time in the same day going back on the road to get something to eat. No wear & tear on my engine. Can add more days before having to change my oil for every 3,000 mile I ride.
Wow I can go on & on why it's smart to just pay the price at the pump if you have to drive by it anyway.

Thanks for reading my post though.

What irks me the worst is the cops sitting in their cars here in the city of Indianapolis and letting them idle. For several minutes at a time. Sometimes for 20 minutes, while they call in their reports. Multiply that times the hundreds of squad cars out there every day and night. It's out of control.

But what if they turned the car off, got a call of a rape or murder 1 mile away and the car wouldn;t start again.

Are you out of your mind? These are brand-spanking-new cars, they have no need to worry about that.
