Don't buy the optomistic view. Consumer confidence is way down. It will only get worse as water, electricity, and trash rates rise. The more dollars consumers have to put out for necessities, the less they will have to spend on other items. The country has gone to hell.

Liberals and the liberal media are attempting to engineer an economic downturn in their bid to get socialists Obama or Hillary elected to the Oval Office. Their biggest supporters are government unions who know that both candidates support huge tax increases that will keep those unions in business for a long time.
That's not to say that there aren't economic concerns; however, they're probably quite temporary: excessively high gas prices and the sub-prime mortage problem involving primarily irresponsible borrowers and lenders. Those two issues should correct themselves rather quickly. Home ownership remains at historical highs and unemployment at safe lows.
If Big Government gets out of the way by reducing taxes and bureaucracy (rather than increasing both as their unions, socialist politicians and presidential candidates are attempting to do), the economy will swing up.

Hey Get Real, I've got a message for you. You need to get real! Home ownership is tanking right now as foreclosures skyrocket. And the government's unemployment records is nothing but a farce. Many people in real estate were not on a regular payroll, e.g. construction workers (illegals), real estate agents, etc. and their status remains off record. And real estate is not just a subprime problem! You've been fed that by the media. A lot of prime borrowers are in over their heads and are foreclosing or are going to foreclose in record numbers. And Big Government cant do anything about. Maybe the economy will swing up, but not for a long, long time from now. So dream on!
