I was more interested in finding out
who would be considered at fault if the bus had hit the car? does the bus or tractor trailer have the right to make a right turn from the left lane with regard to traffic in the right lane? |

Lauren Weinstein is wrong, Data has been conclusive that cell phones cause accidents. Not to ban hand held cell phones because other distractions cause accidents too is silly.

I hate when the morning call warns people like this. What other chance will all the idiots in the world have to kill themselves off?

If you buy a phone with Bluetooth technology built in there is a pile of excellent hands free units you can use available to choose from.(like the Motorola T305 and others)
The aftermarket stereo manufacturers even have Bluetooth handsfree and microphones built in to allow for hands free calling. |

I think it's time for the hand held cell phone driving ban. Talking and driving isn't tough, but the act of using a hand to hold the phone up to the ear is what I consider to be the real problem. Hands-free units work and I use one when driving. It's especially useful with a manual transmission....

There is a valid statistical reason why my company prohibits cell phone use while driving. With large corporations it usually has to do with pretty darn accurate insurance risk assessment tables. If you are in an accident and the cell phone call record shows that you were on your cell phone while driving, you are terminated. It has happened to several employees so far even after months of fair warning.
Lauren Weinstein is an idiot for even suggesting her comparison. Some people need to be just plainly ignored for the ignorance that spews from their mouths. This is one such example. |

Why does it have to a woman thing? All studies point to men especially young men causing more accidents than woman.

Being a motor-cyclist 75% of the year I have nothing to do but pay attention to what's going on around me. 95% of the time I see someone doing something stupid, sure enough they have a phone stuck to their ear. On the days I do drive a car, if I have to use my cell phone I pull over. BAN THEM before I get killed!
|
|
What about eating while driving and reading books? Should those be banned as well? Don't forget about the people having sex! |
|
|
Children in cars cause accidents, let's ban them.

I agree with you! But since 80% of my job is on the road, I observe the idiocy out there. Most women drivers are using a cell phone while trying to handle a motor vehicle and I mean most! These "twits" have brought this upon themselves instead of treating a convenience with responsibility they have chosen to believe it's their right to drive & phone! Well enough & I hope they are stopped & fined heavily. Now if can remove the newest game in town? Supermarket shopping/talking on a cellphone while not caring if they block the aisles or obnoxisly talk loud !! Why are you so important, you're a twit!! |

Last summer a car took a right on red turn in front of me (screeched the tires to do so) only to slam on the brakes for a red light. Being on a motorcycle, I skidded and missed the car ending up sideways at the drivers window. I tapped on the window and was told, "I can't talk right now, I'm on the phone."
I'll vote for anyone supporting a cellphone ban while driving. |

Also wanted to add that the show "Mythbusters" did a study on distracted driving. They tested two drivers sober, driving with cell phones and driving drunk. The worst of the tests was the cell phone test.

Let's put this in a different context to see if it makes more sense. In Iraq there are 3 ways a soldier can die. 1 - Gun shot 2 - IED 3 - Knife attack What would be the response if we did not give them bullet proof vests that stopped gun shots - but did not protect them from IED explosions or knife attacks? If you had trouble connecting the dots...instead of it being a soldier being killed, have it be your parents in a car and they can be killed in an accident as a result of one of three things - 1 - eating in the car 2 - children in the car 3 - using a cell phone. How stupid are we as a society if we do not take every single opportunity to protect our lives and those we love? Yes it is your right to talk on a cell phone and good for you that you have not been in a situation when you absolutely need two hands to prevent your death or possibly killing others. The fact that it has not killed you yet does not make it safe. |

It's easy to spot distracted drivers. They don't make rights on reds where they should, but go right on red where they shouldn't. They make wide turns, often crossing center lines. They inexplicably slow down below the posted speed limit on highways. Then, they inexplicably speed up and tailgate. They fail to signal lane changes, and drift sideways from lane line to lane line.
We've all seen it countless times. And most times we observe that the driver is using a cell phone - not screaming at kids, not changing the CD or radio station, not applying cosmetics or shaving or eating - using a cell phone. The idiots who refuse to go hands free at this point, even to the extent of claiming how well they drive and phone, are the same brain surgeons who claim to drive better with a a little buzz on. If only their proof of Darwinian Theory didn't take so many peripheral casualties. Same thing for helmetless donor cycle riders. We must remain free to kill ourselves, but cannot be permitted to take out others in the process. |

Hundreds of service personnel are lost each year to motor vehicle crashes. The Iraq theater is no different and has resulted in dozens of military traffic fatalities. There are plenty more ways to die in Iraq. |

alex is right - lanta drivers use their personal cell phones while attempting to drive lanta buses.i have seen it as well & have been on a lanta bus that nearly hit a light pole because the driver was trying to either dial or text with his cell phone.i have also seen people shaving, trying to drink something & eat while steering with their elbows - tell me - how much control do you think someone has steering with the elbows??i do not care if the idiots want to kill themselves, that's their perogative, but the problem is, their reckless, careless driving will injure or kill someone else.
there have been some tests done which show that using a cell phone while driving is as dangerous a driving drunk. as for lanta - most of their drivers are idiots who ignore traffic laws. when an intersection is clearly posted "no turn on red" & all lights are red, with a pedestrian walk signal lit, lanta drivers simply turn on red anyway, & give the finger to the hapless pedestrian trying to cross the street. i have heard them curse out pedestrians as well, when the poor pedestrian is legally crossing at an intersection.lanta keeps raising fares but the service is rotten - the routes are not convenient for workers, the drivers obnoxious law breakers.i try not to ride lanta buses unless it is absolutely a necessity - it's too frightening. |
