With Cobalt XFE sales up, GM eyes more XFE models

Here's a no brainer: General Motors will likely introduce more XFE cars in the coming months.

The Cobalt is a great little car. Seems like a no brainer to me also! Continue to research and develop the small cars for gas mileage, everyone else has been doing it for years.

Personally, I fail to see why GM would want to manufacture anything but cobalt XFE's. Its not like people buy them for their roominess. And just how many cobalt XFE's has GM made?

My friends wife has a 2007 Cobalt SS with a 2.0 litre superchared engine. It has good looks and is very quick. This years SS has been changed to a turbocharged 4 cyl and has 260hp. Despite the power she claims over 30mpg on the highway. I know those SS cars are a very small percentage of sales but I am glad they make them also.

I don't mind performance versions, but, the regular plane jane version of the cobalt should get the same mileage as the XFE version. Just WHY would you want to manufacture something that got less MPG in this economy, if you could make something that got better? Its decisions like this that will cause GM to file for bankruptcy.

Before you claim GM to go bankrupt over the Cobalt you might consider the fact the XFE most likely has a manual trans that is more efficient and possibly some other small tweaks(tires, gear ratio, weight reduction?)than an automatic version. Although many people can drive a manual, many young people and old people are automatic only drivers. I think it best to have several models to accomodate everyone.

It's a shame that GM loses money, that's right LOSES money, on every vehicle it produces in Lordstown. Lordstown small car plant was always there for the CAFE offset of the profitable SUV's and trucks, but now that tides have turned GM is going to end up selling a whole bunch of cars at a loss.

Before I retired out of Fort Wayne truck plant, we were told that Lordstown was down about $2000 for every car it produced.

I just read they are adding 1400 new jobs at that plant. I find it hard to believe they are doing that bad.

I'd rather have that then Juanita Gomez making money at a plant in Mexico. GM better fix this profit problem and KEEP jobs HERE at the same time.

It's a shame that GM waited until now to drop the turbo Ecotec in the Cobalt SS and finally offer a Cobalt with decent fuel economy. The rental lots have been packed with cheap Cobalts so many prospective buyers will likely never even take one for a test drive after cruising around in a base model with a 4-speed auto.

So goes the fabled tale of General Motors. Their corporate history is littered with similar tales and weak executives. No one weaker then the goofball at the helm now!

We need an operations guy back at the helm. It will probably happen soon enough. Hey the Cobalt will be gone soon anyhow.

Unfortunately finance geek Fritz Henderson is likely to take the helm. Hand over the keys to a powertrain guy or a stylist and see what happens. GM is lacking product right now. They have the workforce, the facilities, and the capabilities but they don't have many blockbuster products that are priced to where people "just have to have one."
