Thank you Bruce Wolfe for recognizing the fact that Vallejo has working dry docks at the ready to help solve this environmental mess. We have able bodied men here in Vallejo ready to go to work taking these ships apart. Alco Iron and Steel is at the north end of Mare Island and ready and able to process the recycled metals. This would be a huge boost for Vallejo at a time when we need it most. I am fully supportive of any plan to involve Vallejo in the clean up of the Bay.

There will be vocal outcry about this type of enterprise near where Lennar has some "plans". Regardless of what anyone thinks, the environmental and worker safety disciplines for this type of work are more stringent in California and these cannot by law be exported for disposal. They have to be dismantled in the USA and MI has available unassigned assets to do it. It's also temporary. No more than 10 years to dismantle the entire fleet, less than that if only a few ships will dismantled locally. Mare Island's drydocks can fully impound a ship wet or dry. Dredging will not be the responsibility of the city.

Just clean them up and sink them in the ocean to serve as sancturary to marine life. Sunken ships in Hawaii are doing that now. Taking them apart is just a waste of taxpayer's money.

Using obsolete ships to form marine aggregate systems is a viable alternative for most of the fleet, but several are deteriorated to the point of being risky tows in open seas. |

Exactly how many ships can be disposed of this way will determine if designing and constructing a towable container vessel to transport them will prove cost effective. Submitting a proposal to the cognizant authorities could be a good start.

I just watched them tow one into the bay behind angel island then hitch it up to an ocean going tug. Does anyone know what's going on? Are they finally getting rid of them? |

Well, I'll take a contract to dispose of the vessels, and use the facilities at Mare Island, Provided the access, and turn Vallejo's down fall into a workable solution, and donate, non profit money back into the City's Account, provided that the Facilities would be a part of the program. All parties involved would be a Win Win, on this project.
