'Princess' sparks heated debate - Hawaii News

Full story: Honolulu Star-Bulletin

It only hurts if you resemble the last remark. Back in the time, when the "white man" ruled,if you weren't "white" and did not conduct yourself in an appropriate manner that suited him, you were considered uncouth, savage, or even "barbarick". At the time of our kingdom, our royal ancestors were so brainwashed by the "white minority" that they wanted to change themselves by trying to become more "civilized". We should have just ate all of them! The "white" meat is more tender.

The article mentions protests by "native Hawaiian leaders" but fails to articulate precisely what these objections with regard to content, are.

Aside from the title, which the producer admits was selected to market to and lure an unsuspecting audience, there is no objection as to this movies content. Thus, to attack a movie, simply because of its title, is nothing more than a knee-jerk reaction too often displayed by overly-sensitive, self-righteous, self-important "Hawaiian leaders" with no other, nor real, purpose in life.

The undisputed fact remains the then ruling alii who imported the foreign, european, concept of a "monarchy," wanted to try so hard to be "white," as Go Figga partially acknowledges.

However, Go Figga fails to develop or comprehend that it was the ruling alii and their lackeys, who wanted to be "white" or "white european monarchs."

The unchecked greed and avarice of the ruling alii is evidenced by their abuse of the makaainana or common native Hawaiians, particularly during the Sandalwood trade, when these common People of the Land, exploited for centuries under the oppressive Kapu system, were turned into virtual slaves and ordered by the ruling alii to strip the forests of 'iliahi or Sandalwood, so the ruling alii could be "white" and purchase trinkets, rolls of red cloth, mirrors and other oddities so they could be "white."

Furthering their self interest at the expense of the commoners, the ruling alii appropriated the now outdated concept of the european model government or style of oppression popularly known as a "Monarchy" too.

This "white" Monarchy was used to strip also the recognized interest in the communal lands belonging to the common native Hawaiian tenants in the Mahele of 1848. After cheating the native tenants out of their one-third share of lands, and turning them into destitute, homeless vagrants, this "white" Monarchy government had them arrested for vagrancy, put into prison and onto work lines to build the public road and wall projects in the "Kingdom."

Furthermore, the ruling alii, wanting to be as "white" as they could possibly be, married out and to "white" european men. Kailani's own family is proof of that. Look at Liliuokalani and Pauahai too---marrying "white" europeans or descendants thereto.

Blaming "white" people when the alii you worship are just as "white," is a dishonest attempt to cover over just how corrupt this Monarchy was and how it victimized the common native Hawaiian tenants in, and since the Mahele of 1848.

God Bless these United States of America for treating the discrete group of "native Hawaiians" under the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act, 1920.

What does Chris Lee mean, "the real story of this HIFF is the coming of age of an entirely new generation of local filmmakers -- some of them from ACM -- who are now positioned to create a sense of Hawaiian cinema"? The story of Princess Kaiulani should have been a no-brainer for Lee with all of his Hollywood connections to have long ago arranged to see filmed using local writers and talent. So why not? Instead, all of the big checks will go directly to the film's foreign copywrite owners as it's exploited in every country on the planet -- money that could have funded many more aquisitions for the Palace had someone of Lee's presumed stature acted on it.
And what of Father Damien's story? Could Lee not have facilitated that film using his lauded local talent -- knowing for years that Damien was going to be made a saint? How many other stories will be pirated away from Hawai`i while Lee's school gears up?
I also wonder what Lee means by, "a sense of Hawaiian cinema"? That makes no sense.
BTW, The late Nino Martin at Hawaii Public Television recognized the value of the Father Damien story 30 years ago and produced an acclaimed video which one might assume Hawaii Public Television owns. Why was that not run on national Public TV again while the Pope was doing his thing last week? How much would that have returned to HI Public TV? "Hawai`i, the islands of lost opportunity"

Idiotic.

Amazing how otherwise intelligent people can let this type of attack roll off their tongue as if they were completely blind.

Fact is the Alii left one of the most amazing collections of philanthropic organizations the world had seen up to the 1800s. They were ahead of their time. Kamehameha Schools, Liliuokalani Trust, Lunalilo Trust, Queens Hospital, Kapiolani Hospital, Saint Francis School, St. Andrews Priory and the Royal Hawaiian Band.

That's their legacy. Schools, hospitals, music and caring for the elderly.

Not to mention the book filled with songs personally composed by the various Ali'i would fill a thick binder. Also a very unusual talent not seen in most "leaders" around the world.

You and whomever wrote your quotes are precisely the people the title of this film was aimed at. You are the people who call Hawaiian Alii "savage" and "barbarian". But you really just reveal your own ignorance.

Nice glossing over.

But your failure to know about the Mahele of 1848, proves you are not educated about true Hawaiian history.

Apparently, you only know, repeat and parrot the stuff fed to you in OHA's propaganda newspaper, or dictated to you at the UH Center for Made Up Hawaiian Studies or indoctrinated into you at the Kam School "Worship The Alii" program.

Get angry. The more you hate, the more you will learn.

When you finally realize you have been duped and USED by the 1/64th "alii" who have the nerve to call other people "white" when they are just as, if not more so, "white," you may reach enlightenment.

Until then, your just another OHA type, expecting a hand-out simply because you signed up for their stupid "Kau Inoa for Freeloaders program."

You see, the alii that set up that stuff you mention, wanted to ingratiate the commoners they and their predecessors had victimized.

You see this at Kam School. Pauahi enjoyed her wealth because her predecessors failed to deliver to the commoners their share. As one chief at the Mahele said, "If we give them their land, what use would they have of us?"

So, lolo, all these "benefits" are really attempts to keep stooges like you in line, and continue your mindless "alii worship."

But, you all blaming "white people" is bogus when most of you all are "white" too.

Make sense?

Most of Hawaii right now anyway is ruled by the Japanese and Chinese. Do they acknowledge the other nationalities as equal? No. They make fun of the Filipinos, Hawaiians, Samoans, Koreans, etc... as being "lowly educated Fresh Off the Boat know nothing people. They should make a movie about that.

You are the true lolo.

The maka'ainana lost out because greedy Haole like you took their land via adverse possession scams and via legal decisions made by Haole Plantation courts and judges.

The Crown Lands of the Ali'i you find the need to hate are still in tact.

The Government Lands were retained for use by the government in the operation of the Hawaiian Nation.

As for the Kuleana Lands for the makaainana, let me school your vicious angry mind if possible.

"The maka'ainana were confused and did not know what they needed to do to obtain the land. Many were unaware they needed to do anything, because they always had access to whatever lands they needed. Many preferred continueing with the old system, whereby they had access to all the lands of the Ahupua'a, for pasturing, fishing, gathering, in exchange for providing some labor to the Konohiki." (Quote from Kuykendall in "Who Owns the Crown Lands by UH Law Professor Van Dyke.)

So there is an obvious huge overwhelming "SAD" element to Hawaiian history that you choose to entirely ignore. You are the type that would say baby seals, whales, dolphin, nene should all go extinct if they are too stupid and too weak to know how to survive in this world.

The invasion of Hawaii, isolated from any outside exchange for thousands of years, by technologically advanced cultures and the instant imposition of that culture upon the Native Peoples was too much to handle for many.

Some minds and hearts are concerned with that element of the history. Greedy, angry, selfish, hateful types like you won't get it.

Monarchy, otherwise known as generational dictatorship has no place in the modern world other than something for movies and history books.

Barbarian originated from the Greek word barbaros which means foreigner. Tad bit ironic that it has the same meaning as hauli.

How did you come to your conclusion? Seems like you're a bit biased or maybe racist. I don't see any one ethnic group as "ruling" Hawaii. If you haven't noticed, we had a governor of Filipino ancestry (Cayetano), Hawaiian ancestry (Waihee), Japanese (Ariyoshi), and haole (Lingle). Our current major is Samoan. Our business leaders are of varied ethnicities. I'm sorry if you were a recipient of derogatory remarks but don't include everyone based on comments by a few.

Other than that one position, you seem to have not noticed the ethnic background of 90% of the HGEA DOE, and the House and the Senate, not to mention the ethnicity of most of those who work for the labor unions that get all the political protection and political patronage.

Not exactly a tower of diversity.
