Hilo flights likely to cost more - Hawaii Business

Full story: Honolulu Star-Bulletin

Interisland airlines likely will boost fares of outbound Hilo flights by possibly $20 or more in the wake of a 371 percent increase that went into effect on July 1 in what the carriers are charged by the state for using the passenger waiting lounge at Hilo Airport.

18 bucks for sitting around in that moldy icebox? There has to be a misplaced decimal point in this charge. The ticket counter/check-in area gets by fine without all that expensive AC.

The State DOT should be ashamed for charging anything for that piece of s**t waiting room. And a drop in passenger traffic is a ridiculous reason for raising fees. This is another hidden tax imposed on Hawaii taxpayers.

DOT spokeswoman Tammy Mon should get Her facts in line with REALTY. Aloha and ATA cannot be blamed for lack of funds/passengers or business. Place the blame on the MIDGET MENTALITY of overcharging EVERY TOURIST FOR A BASIC VACATION. STOP "THE SUPERFERRY" from operating, Stop "THE FERRY" from shuttling passengers, Raise the PRICE of "THE BUS". Add additional "TAXES on Hotel Rooms". Harass "Pacific Airlines" to the point of cancelling flights. These are just a few acts of STUPIDY that seems to be the SWINE FLU of Hawaii. It would be easier to ----------POST A SIGN ------HAWAII CLOSED TO TOURISTS.

Someone has to pay. How much did taxes increase for air cargo? Where's the high speed high capacity ferry when you need it?

Hilo to $18.43 a passenger from $3.91.

Kona's holdroom rate is 18 cents a passenger

Kauai is 53 cents

Maui is 92 cents

Oahu is $1.13

DOT is run by Lingle, a Republican, whose party has historically and supposedly advocated consistently for lower taxes and fees.

This is a total shock.

Not only that, the huge disparity between the various airport hold rooms is outrageous and will cause much hurt to the already struggling Hilo economy.

Governor Lingle, you should reconsider such an egregious jump in the fees that will result in less economic activity that, in turn, will result in less tax revenue income.

Cut the fees until the economy recovers.

What they need to do here is ask if you want to use the waiting room or just hang around outside till your flight is almost ready. For 18 bucks you will find me OUTSIDE.

BTW, the hold room for interisland at Kona is well, OUTSIDE...other than trash pick up there is virtually no cost. Maybe they should note that over in Hilo and forget the expensive AC.

I am not surprised considering that they arrested some Hawaiians when they built Hilo Airport which is on title thus land that was never transferred by Hawaiians and/or their legal heirs.

Hewa then... hewa now.

Why is there even such an asinine fee? Is the state that hardup that it is going to squeeze the last red cent out of everyone flying into Hilo? Might as well just drive to Kona - they get better ticket prices than Hilo sometimes too.

With that rate....no mainland airline would even think of coming here. We'll drive to Kona to take our flights.

Another vivid example of why revenues continue to decline in the state coffers. They continue to find new ways to further kill what revs they do have.
It's unanimous, the unions, legislators and the executive branch have all contributed to their own demise. Cancel my flight to Hilo, Vegas here I come!!

that's a stupid tax. Spending without taxation will get us out of this recession. The taxes can come later when we need to keep the boom to a reasonable level to avoid inflation.

Well, this exemplifies the typical state approach. Fewer passengers because of Aloha and ATA? We'll raise the price of flying out of here! That'll bring them back!
