Smart grid gets island test in Maui resort area

A 4-square-mile patch of Maui in the nation's most fossil-fuel dependent state soon will be home to a new kind of power grid, one that saves energy by turning off household appliances when electricity is expensive and makes better use of wind and solar power.

The idea of turning off appliances remotely seems more of a hassle than a cure. The idea on page two about storing energy in very large battery packs for future use seems more sane. It helps in the respect that solar and wind are intermittant energy producing sources. There are other types of batteries available, such as flow batteries. One such company out of Canada VRB-ESS makes a scalable flow battery that can be from 250KWh storage up to several MWh of storage depending on the amount of power that needs to be stored.

Maui has sun and wind and tide and geothermal, what is wrong you might ask? Money is GOD! Every time you fill up your gas tank you buy them another gun.
