Mr. Daniels has been through a very vicious cycle of hate many of us African Americans go through in the state of Hawaii and abroad. However, I never will say I received hatred from Hawaiians more whites and Asians who presume they are white. Caucasians have done plenty bad things to every race and some are to ignorant to remember this. Case in point look what happened to the Indians. Betrayed and sent to reservations, African American shackled and taken away from their homeland, Japanese sent to concentration camps during the war, The Queen Liliuokalani was the last reigning monarch of the Hawaiian Islands was annexed by the United States and forced to give up her throne. Hawaiians ripped from their land and still to this day. Their lands are being sold for greed. Father Damien brought leprosy to Molokai. So, when you see you’re African American neighbors mowing their lawns, washing their cars, playing w/ their kids or just driving down the road, or remember we are not the enemy. Not everything you see portrayed on cops is true for all of us. Besides you should not let television dictate, who people are. We African Americans defend this lands and this country with our blood, sweat and tears. Just like the local Braddahs. We live in Hawaii as Airline Pilots, Doctors, Pharmacist, Federal Law Enforcement Agents, Agriculturist; Lawyers, College Professors, Military, Ministers, Local Law Enforcement and even University of Hawaii Athletic Director etc. So, when you pass by some African Americans and you see them doing well for themselves. Don’t just think he or she is selling drugs. We just happen to hate ignorant people speaking with ignorant minds. Before you speak of the negative and of jealousy, maybe you should check yourself out first before getting upset. Maybe you’re not living the way you should. Whoa Bill-corrcetion: Father Damien did not bring Leprosy to Molokai! Google please. All else-I agree.

Yes, even in Hawaii, the people are prejudice against certain races. Stop calling the visitors haoles. There are light-skinned Hispanics, and they're no haoles. Hawaii is racists -- every ethinic race has a nickname -- Japs (Japanese), Pakes (Chinese), Kanakas (Hawaiian), Flips (Filipinos), etc. They always say Hawaii people are friendly -- island of Aloha. That a lot of BS -- they're not all that nice -- you see them driving; no courtesy even when you're walking on the street. True. Prejudice is all over...some people don't want to admit they are prejudice and sometimes it is so obvious by their actions...

If your statement holds true then tell me, why is it in every state not country I have resided in, I was not able to give clerks at the checkout monies in there hand, but had to lay it on the counter and receive my change the same? I have encountered racial ignorance in all states even growing up in Hawaii by Haole's/Japanese, but to steriotype all of Hawaii Nei on a small population of ignorant persons is appalling. You my dear gentlemen need to travel around the continental united states and see that all states has a small poppulation of ignorant people. if you are indeed Hawaiian then you know good and well how black people are treated there ...even if its not you youself that is part of it ...yes prejudice is here there and everywhere but like the gentleman said it is at its "extreme" in Hawaii...the Queen said protect the land but i think she would agree that her people have missed the mark with becoming prejudice toward people

It mentions nothing about racist Hawaiians or locals. In fact, if you read it he mentions that those who harassed him where Caucasian men.

First of all I want to give thanks to God for blessing Charles Daniels and his family. I used to date Charles some years ago. My son and I called him Charlie. It breaks my heart to know that my people have suffered for so many years and are still suffering, I'm a Black Female working for The Sacramento Bee Newspaper, I have been with the Company for 19 years and I'm dealing with some of the same things Charlie went through on a daily basis. I'm in the process right now of trying to get some help for my situation. Its a very hard thing to prove to a white socioety. Racism is something that the Bee is very know for. Charlie has always been a strong minded man, and hearing this story really touches home, Because Its happening to me. Charlie I wish you and your family the best. I can only imagine how you felt everyday having to go to that place, I blame the people running the company. This is something that they have obviously been doing to black people for years. The sad part about it is its not the first time and it won't be the last. No matter how much money they had to pay..
God bless..

I think everyone is over-reacting because his case was "filed" in Hawaii. He did not say "Hawaii" is racist, he blamed a mainland based company with transfered mainland people.

Apparently people aren't reading the article. Its about a defense contractor not complying with eeoc laws and getting hit. There's nothing about racist locals, Akaka Bill, crimes against tourist and so forth. If people would like to comment on those issues there are other forums available.

I agree with Mac there. The vicious racism of KS, OHA and other illegal entities discriminating on the basis of race needs to end and billions of dollars of restitution paid to the 80% of non-Hawaiians living here.

I agree I am biracial Black and White mixture. I was born and raised in Hawaii and lived there for 24 years. I also went to the public school system. Most of my best friends were Haole or white. It was like growing up in the deep south in the forties and fifties. I got called a white Ni---r many times. I hated it and it ruined my self worth and idenity. Most of the time I denied that I even had any black blood. I begged by mother not to come to my school for fear of being teased. The white kids also had it bad. I would have been better off growing up in the mainland. My looks were similar to Mariah carey but it did not matter because once they know you have black blood you are teased called popolo. It is even harder for dark skin blacks, they have it the worst, and so do Blonde hair men with blue eyes. Blonde women have it ok. Even Obama mentions he was called a Koon and he went to a private school. Black people stop being so nice to Hawaiians when they come to the mainland because if you were in Hawaii they would treat you like dirt. White people also stop treating Hawaiians like something special, you are also treated like dirt. The Samoans and people from Tonga were fine, The Hawaiians treated the Samoans poorly also. The Japanese rule the government and they are treated good. No place to raise a child unless you have lots of money and don't have to deal with the local community, or if you are famous than you should be fine. Many locals are taught to cover up the racism because they don't want it to affect tourist.

To the people making this about "Hawaiian people" or "local people"...apparently you haven't read the article properly. The racist group in question happen to be white people, not Hawaiians or any other race.
Stop twisting the meaning of the original article to fit your argument.

I really don't think it matters to say what race I am in this post, because we're all of flesh and blood with the same physical weaknesses. I do want to say out of all the places and countries i've lived in my life, Hawaii (on Oahu) carries a lot of hate. Sitting down for a nice meal, waiting in line at the movies, heading to my car in the parking lot, riding my bike... I've experienced it all. It happens randomly and it can be frightening. I know the history. I also know in history every race on this planet has done something inhumane to another race/clan/tribe/town/country/e tc/etc. We're all individual people with our own lives. We all have families and people who love us. We are all so alike. And I bet if I would have met those people another way, they would have laughed at my quirkyness and never even noticed skin color... realizing I am just another human being, soaking up all the time I have here, on earth.=)

I would have to put my opinion in this debate. I am African American of Jamaican & Louisiana Creole Blood. My skin is chocolate brown. I have lived in Hawaii or many years, and I would have to say that they are racist here in Hawaii. It does not usually start happening until you have been out here for a while. If you only been here for a few years you will not recognize the racism right away, but stay for a while and it reviels itself in many ways. Not as bad as some places on the mainland where I lived, but it exists. For Hawaiians to deny this is a lie. They know it is true, and if you been around them for a while then you can detect and they will not notice. I am sales rep at a major Hawaiian company. I worked very hard to work my way from the bottom to the top. When I finally reached the top, that is when ( like every other place in Amerikkka) it started to reviel itself to me. They did not mind when I was down, but when I got to the top and was making more money than them...Straight up Hate. I continue to be the top earner, but have been left with a bad taste in my mouth for the so called" Aloha Spirit". That's a bunch of bullshit. It's not just the Hawaiians, Japanese, Koreans, chinese, whites, and Filipinos will hate on Samoans, Tongans, Micronesians, Malaysians, and Blacks especially if you are more succesful than them. That is the truth! Believe it over 10 years and going strong!
