Insured, but Driven Bankrupt by Health Crises

Full story: www.nytimes.com

Health insurance is supposed to offer protection — both medically and financially. But as it turns out, an estimated three-quarters of people who are pushed into personal bankruptcy by medical problems actually had insurance when they got sick or were injured.

In present practice, health insurers are profit motivated and will limit care as much as necessary to enhance their bottom line. It is vital that the insurred be self-informed in regard to their treatments and demand appropriate care. Or, better yet, stay very healthy so that your premiums support others' care. That's just the way it works in profit motivated medical insurance.

Unpaid government taxes cause more debt and bankruptcies than medical costs.

Life causes death. Taxes provide for the general welfare.

We pay double what other industrialized countries pay for healthcare and rank in the high thirties in quality care.

The Democrats are their own worst enemies right now, as the Republicans are a marginalized irrelevant party. The Democrats have to choose between lobbyist money for reelection and doing the right thing.

Put your money where your mouth is. Contact your members of Congress and demand a single payer option, NOW.

That's real smart: completely limit your options to a monopoly bureaucracy.

Smarter to demand tort reform. Unfortunately, trial lawyers keep the Democrats supplied with steak and lobster.

Medical INSURANCE must operate as NON-PROFIT. They have no reason to be around and make billions in profits over dead bodies of people they deny coverage. They add no value to the process at all. End for-profit insurance and billions will be saved.

Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should an insurance middlemans profits come between a patient and his/her doctor.

Fire Department Run BY Government
Police Department Run BY Government
Postal Service Department Run BY Government
US Military Service Department Run BY Government

You can have US Postal (public) with FedEX (Private) and UPS

Who's afraid of the public option? Health care debate is stuck on a straw man

Executives of three of the nation's largest health insurers told federal lawmakers in Washington on Tuesday that they would continue canceling medical coverage for some sick policyholders, despite withering criticism from Republican and Democratic members of Congress who decried the practice as unfair and abusive.
An investigation by the House Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations showed that health insurers WellPoint Inc., UnitedHealth Group and Assurant Inc. canceled the coverage of more than 20,000 people, allowing the companies to avoid paying more than $300 million in medical claims over a five-year period.

It also found that policyholders with breast cancer, lymphoma and more than 1,000 other conditions were targeted for rescission and that employees were praised in performance reviews for terminating the policies of customers with expensive illnesses.

they ALL lie, ALL the time...NONE of them have your best interest at heart, the ONLY time they give a rat's ass about you is when they want your vote.

do you really belive, after seeing how well medicare is run, how well the dmv is run, how well the post office is run and how well amtrak is run that the government will FINALLY get it right with universal health care?
can you REALLY be THAT stupid?

My friend told me the other day that they knew someone with testicular cancer. It could have been fixed but the insurance company took so long deciding whether they would cover it or not (still has not decided) and it spread and now he has probably a couple weeks to live.

Testicular cancer is one of the fastest spreading cancers and in all likelihood the insurance company knows that, insurance drags its feet, go figure.

In my opinion they killed him.

You think he would be better off if the government were the one to decide on (and ration) treatment?

Actually, with single payer, he would be dead before he got to the first doctor appointment.

Why do people fall for this single payer baloney?

Canadians who can afford to do so come to the US when they really need treatment.

It may be different in Mississippi, but in my state the DMV has evolved quite nicely. Except for every third license when you need to get a mugshot, everything else can be done on line at my convenience. My insurance company on the other hand is almost completely paper based. This built in inefficiency is just another way they can justify taking a larger bite out of my pocket book.

So, if you don't want universal healthcare, stick with your private insurer. Whats so hard about that?
