By the way so does Fox 4 news they say their station is closed captioned but it is only when they want it to be. I watch it daily and half the time I am trying to piece together what's being said or happening around us. Most staions on TV has captioning yes but let's see you hearing people try to read a jumble of mixed up words or letters that are supposed to mean something. If your going to close caption then we should have a right to be able to at least read and understand it just the same as you hearing get to listen and understand what is being said or going on.

Another example of corporate greed which completely ignores the wishes of deaf people for equal communication access!

OMG! CAn you people freaking get a life! Is 15 minutes of loop THAT BIG OF A FREAKING DEAL? Watch channel 2 or channel 6 or maybe, just maybe, get off your lazy fat butt and go find the information out. Of course this columnist is against the rich. She is upset she won't get there with her weak and poorly written articles. I pay taxes too and I'd rather not see CC on networks that might cause someone to lose their job. Why don't people expect something for the blind? You people are pathetic to think everything should be handed to you just because you have a disability. I don't get to park at the front of a store but people do and don't even the handicap sign. It's this crap that just lights a fire under me! Go get a hearing aid!

Some of the comments above have astounded me. I am British and thought the Americans were more understanding and accepting of disabilities including deafness than the British. Obviously I see through rose tinted spectacles! Wahhh in particular seems to have a huge problem and I just hope he never has to suffer the isolation which hearing impairment too often causes. The point is that closed captions (not open captions which could not be turned off if unwanted) would keep people up to date with current Villages news and thus feel more a part of it all - not the same as looking for news on the internet and in newspapers. As for the developer. He runs a business. He sets the prices and people pay or go somewhere else if they don't like what they see. Which is not to say it is fair for him to discriminate against people with hearing or any other problems.

Don't you find it odd that Lauren chose this particular station, moreover; this owner of the Villages, who happens to be filthy rich, to be her target?

What part of "he's losing 1.4 million annually" don't you understand. This horrible, big, bad, filthy rich owner... oh did I mention he's a Republican and donates a pot full to the Republican party every year...(I digress)...keeps this TV station up and running simply to get out important info to it's residents out of courtesy. This does not make him any money! No money... a tremendous loss people! That's the reason why so many cuts took place two years ago at VNN.

Now, so we're all on the same page as Lauren, let's get this straight... This horrible rich man is being seen as the devil because he's spending 1.4 million each year so people can stay informed, out of courtesy? And if he doesn't drop tens of thousands more, not only is he the devil, he's rich a rich evil devil. Wow! I think I understand now.

Do you realize how many national TV commercials air each and every day with no Closed Captioning? Come on guys... pick your spots. People might lose their jobs at that station if he's forced to go CC. He might say screw it all, it's not worth it.

There isn't one program on television that shouldn't be captioned, nor should programs go on the air without audio- description. Given the amount of crap on television that is captioned, certainly the news can and should be!

Sure, these people could change stations - the power of the dollar (i.e., boycotts and buycotts) go a long way and should be well practised.

more power to the residents who are fighting the corporation - it's a good cause and keeping mentally active is a nothing but good for their health!

Wahhh - grow up

Hey Lauren,
In your admirable attempt to defend the deaf, you fail to realize what you may be causing. It seems your obvious hatred towards the extremely rich is overloading your common sense.
In your in-depth research of VNN, you failed to dig deeper to see what has happened in the past with the station. When their lawyer said that the station has not maid a dime what they were really saying is, "the station is of little importance to us." You say it's an arm of their PR. That it helps them sell houses, but really it's broadcast to those ALREADY living there. What, are they going to buy a second house? No, it is simply to get out info on upcoming events important to the community. Moreover; to provide important, valid info concerning new services such as heath related businesses and health stories. Important topics for the elderly... don't ya think? Lotta PR going on there, hugh?
The recklessness, I see with your article this... I mentioned that VNN is not as important to the owner. He simply sees the dollars going out the door. But you have not considered the employees there. Your research, had you dug just two years prior, would have shown the massive layoffs which plagued VNN. They went from a staff of around 100, to barely enough to keep afloat. Somewhere in the teens. They went from providing numerous types of programming, to simply a 15 min. news segment, replayed, as you wrote, over and over until the next day. If this plays out, as your article suggests, to be an even grater "burden" on the owner. You, maam, could be the sole reason why the remaining skeleton crew at VNN could be sending out resumes this fall.
Sleep well tonight, and um... by the way... when's the Orlando Sentinel providing CC for it's Streaming Video content?
Sincerely,
Dan Eschenfelder
Husband of former VNN employee
My heart bleeds for the employees who lost their jobs--not really. Again, they are simply more vctims of the totally uncaring attitude of the Morse family.I find it totally laughable that they say the cannot afford to run the station. More precisely said--they do not CARE to run the station NOR do they CARE about whom they fire--simply that they don't give a r**t's a** about any of you. AND, if you acually believe that letters like this will result in firings and closure of the station--that is a pathetic situation.

Then you're no better than them.

Wow, I never knew they were quoted as such things.

Since when does "pathetic" trump "realistic."
