I used to sparr with Kevin in Buffano’s Gym. I was only 16 and Kevin almost always left me with two black eyes. My teachers taught I was an abused kid. Kevin was a Prince. He would see me on the streets with my friends and always come over to me and say hi how are you doing Jerry. My friend’s mouths would drop and say you know Kevin Smith. Everyone in Jersey City knew who Kevin was. Kevin stayed with me all of my life. While I was in school pursuing my masters degree and times were hard I could always see Kevin saying “Nobody said it would be easy kid”. Kevin would say to me wait til you fight somebody your age, your gona knock him out. I later won the NJ Golden Gloves, Kevin was already gone but his spirit never left me. I can see him hitting the heavy bag like it was yesterday. God Bless you.

im related to kevin smith's nephew. He was named after his uncle kevin smith. I am a niece to one of Kevin Smith's brothers who is Patrick Smith. There is also another brother James Smith. All of them miss him very much. His death occured when he was playing with a gun at a kitchen table and it shot right at his head. IT WAS AN ACCIDENT not suicide. I never got to meet him because i am just a teenager right now. But he still does mean a lot to me.

Hi Tom Pritchard
I emailed Henry Hanscup and asked him to put Kevin in the NJ Boxing Hall of Fame. He said they would consider it. Let me know if there is anything I could do to help. I wrote a book about Growing up in Jersey City. You might find it interesting. Title is Growing up in a Tough City by Jerry McGrellis. My email is Jerrym57@hotmail.com I would love to help get Kevin in the hall of fame. Take Care Jerry

Did not have the pleasure to know Kevin but sure do know the rest of the family. Big Daddy, Patrick, Brian, Scotty, and of course, Sue. If any of you check this site, just want to say hello. Hey Sue, when did you move to the West?? Got to see Kevin's last fight at Vet's in Bayonne, think against BoB Smith. Kicked his ass. Remember the GRID!!!

I saw K Smith fight 6 or 7 times at the Embassy in Union City. He was a middle weight then. He had one big fight in AC and won. Thought he had committed suicide in early 80's.

I lived on Danforth between ocean and garfield, Kevin was a neighborhood hero, a scrappy kid from the streets who gave us all hope. I remeber going to MSG to see Kevin fight Clyde Mudgett, it was on of his toughest fight. It seemed like the whole MSG garden was from Jersey City. Kevis was an early version of Arturo Gatti. Hey Susan, hope all is well, Tell Brian I said hello susan m smith wrote: <quoted text> i do know, kevin,he's my younger brother, unfortunately there's some descrepency over the nunmber of professional fights he fought.we the family say the number is 19 professional fights.not long ago the was a guy who was trying to get kevin into the boxing hall of fame here in new jersey,he said there were 15 professional fights listed,so the juries still out on that one.as for his record,he lost 2 fights,& had 1 draw.one fight he lost,he went on to fight a rematch & won.i must say i'm touched to think after all this time someone is still intersted in him.loing kevin at such a young age & with so much ahead of him,was tragic & extremely devastating to our family.hope i was able to help.

Hey Sue, living in California now....Nice. I was a young kid living on Princeton Ave. where the Smiths lived. My sister hung out with the Smiths, who were known to be a legendarily tough family in the neighborhood. I was lucky enough (about 13 yrs old) to be taken by my sister to see Kevin fight twice at the Ice World in Totawa.(Kevin was robbed when they called his fight with Mike Quarry a draw.) Kevin was a hero to all including the little kids (myself included) as he ran his miles. He never spoke down to us and his reputation was tremendous. I still think of him as a type of "Rocky". It still hurts to think of the feeling that we felt when we first heard that he died. I can only imagine the feelings that his family felt. He also was the bodyguard (unarmed) for the Mayor of Jersey City for quite a while. His way helped to shape and influence alot of us as kids....
