You can't compare English Rights to French Rights in Quebec

Full story: www.theprovince.com

QUEBEC — Amir Khadir, the only Québec solidaire MNA in the National Assembly, was one of 65 protesters who were handcuffed and detained Tuesday night by Quebec City police for participating in an illegal demonstration.

Asked whether he would support Quebec’s English speakers who consider Bill 101 rules limiting English on commercial signs to be unjust, Khadir said, “I might not agree on that point.”

“You cannot defy a law just because of your own personal interest,” Khadir said. “It’s only when you are doing something for the common good.”

Later in French he added that the language of signs is an issue of “commercial rights,” not fundamental rights, and is “very, very secondary.”

Reminded of the Supreme Court of Canada’s 1988 ruling that Bill 101’s French-only sign provisions did violate freedom of expression guarantees in Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Khadir said “opinions vary on that” but opposition to Bill 78 is “unanimous.”

“It isn’t the same thing,” he said.

Oh for sure there are no comparisons between french rights and anglo rights in Quebec. It's quite simple really. The english have very few rights and the french have EVERY right to do as they say and please. Don't agree? Just ask them they blatently admit it. Le "not withstanding" clause la, we do what we want, oui oui??

Well notme its nice to see you and i agree on something, that is most francophones outside kebec dislike kebec and the way they do things.
And thank you for that as that is an admittance from you that you disagree with discrimination against english canadians, which is what kebec does on a grand scale.
Too bad you would not take that stance one step further and help us get rid of new brunswicks copycat anti english laws...me thinks there is hope for you yet

well so far except for dieppe foolish bilingual sign law ( i agree withe bilingual sign thing ) that wants French to be the bigger sign is stupid since this part should be up to the shop owners or at least of equal size ...

and i totally disagree with 2 health systems ... as long as we have bilingual staff available on every floor (more than one too ) hospitals should work together for the betterness of people ...

iam pro bilingual but not anti English nor pro French

Imagine Quebec seperates from Canada but not with Native lands oh no...James Bay Cree gets to run the Hydroelectric or be paid all royalities plus the running of their reservation...Quebec will become smaller in size because natives want to keep their land and be appart of Canada and Quebec will be taxed for foreign trade having no access to export or import... It would become a third world country right in the middle of North America... Maybe they will join the USA... Face it someting needs to be done to stop this English vs French or vice versa...We are Canadians and lets start with that?

Do you seriously believe that the USA would tolerate bilingualism for one minute?

Robert, you dumb son of a B****... They do tolerate it in many States. But it's Spanish, not French that they tolerate. Oh, except those red neck KKK members and such, who don't tolerate anyone who aren't of their color, or speak the same language, or even those who do speak English but not with the same accent as them, or even those who don't smell the same as them. Keep it in the family and reproduce other dumb offsprings. Is that the kind of Canada you and your bigot friends are looking for ? Then move to Texas !!!

gee you know how many states but you do not KNOW FRENCH therefore someone told you ....

and also English in the states in not the official language since : However, the U.S. Constitution does not designate an official language, nor is there a requirement that a territory adopt English as its primary language in order to become a state......

only fools are crying to have English only

Title VI, which requires that vital materials be available in the language of everyone receiving benefits subsidized by the Federal Government.

Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the 2000 Executive Order No. 13166 require that public entities receiving federal funds must have all vital documents available in every language that their clients speak; every language, not just Spanish. Why? Because the U.S. has never declared an official language and as such, the Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 still applies.

Daily Horoscope for May 23

Aquarius

If you're a typical Aquarian you're often quite idealistic and today is no exception. You're wandering around on cloud nine, especially if you're thinking about a very special someone, and indulging in all sorts of deliciously romantic daydreams. Reality? You've no time for it right now, because it will intrude too much on your fantasies.
