Was Mark Roth's 1978 Really the Greatest Season in Pba History?

Full story: Bowlers Journal Intl.

ANNIVERSARIES ARE GREAT EXCUSES for spending a little time looking back, even if, as Satchel Paige so sagely put it, something might be gaining on us.

I had the misfortune of meeting Mark Roth at a Pro-Am held at Ten-pin-On-The-Mall bowling alley in New Jersey back in the 80's. Mr. Roth was rude, haughty, and obnoxious to the amatures who had entered the tournament. Originally, I had placed my name in contention to bowl with Mr. Roth, but after meeting him, I quickly removed my name and had the good fortune to bowl instead with a true gentleman bowler, Marshall Holman! Mark Roth is a disgrace to the game of bowling!

I have to call bulls##t on Mary, here. I've met Mr. Roth, I've bowled with and against him many times, and there's not a nicer guy in the sport. If you're competing against him, that's one thing; he's a killer on the lanes. Off the lanes, totally different guy. No way in hell she's being honest here.

I don't know if it was 1978 or not, but on ESL I seen a replay of Mark Roth vs Dick Ritger, Mark was hammering the pocket and getting tapped, Dick Ritger puts the second ball in the 10th dead on the nose and carried it, the look on Mark Roth's face was great!

I asked for Marks autograph on a bowling pin. He asked my name and wrote To Ed, best wishes Mark Roth. He was signing everyones autograph. 1977 season was clearly the greatest ever. There were nearly half the tournaments. He was my bowling ideal as a kid.
