Having taken the Civil Service test, perhaps I could avail myself of the employment opportunities within the SPD, since they appear to be down 3. Alas, I may not be suited to the job since I don't steal, deal, cheat, lie, bully, beat my wife, or keep a mistress. Are these things they would teach me at the academy?

Not really. It's mostly on-the-job training, passed from one generation to the next. It's very important for tradition to be respected.

Where was Alan Stein when this was all going on? Was he too busy to keep this info from reaching the Enterprise? Seemed the Globe had no problem being right on top of this story. Was he not privy to this or did he chose not to print this in fear of being denied the dirt on the SPD?

At least we NOW have a sense of hope that SOMETHING is being done to rid this town of corrupt cops and polititians. About time SOMEONE did SOMETHING to protect those of us who live here.

THANKS FEDS, happy to know you are here. Can you move a little quicker to move in on the rest of them? We're living in a dangerous situation with many scary people in authority carrying guns!

FBI accuses Stoughton cop of lie
Detective becomes third Stoughton cop to resign as corruption probe is confirmed
----------
By Maureen Boyle
ENTERPRISE STAFF WRITER

----------
STOUGHTON — A town police officer who quit the force is charged with lying to FBI agents in what is the first official indication of a federal probe into the department.

Arlindo Romeiro, 37, who resigned on Thursday, was charged in U.S. District Court on Friday with making a false statement to the FBI when interviewed “regarding an ongoing corruption investigation,” according to paperwork filed in federal court.

Romeiro is being summoned to court, and a date for his appearance has not been set. Conviction on the charge carries a prison sentence of up to five years, followed by three years supervised release and a $250,000 fine.

John Anzivino, vice chairman of Stoughton Board of Selectmen, said he was “obviously concerned” with the allegation, but has not heard directly from the FBI about any investigations of the Police Department or any town agency.

“We have had no contact with the FBI ourselves to date,” he said.“I’m kind of stuck waiting for the information to come in before I can comment on anything,” he said.

Anzivino said he learned about the federal charge against the former officer Friday evening from The Enterprise.

Romeiro, an eight-year veteran of the department, is accused of lying to the FBI agents on July 13 — the first formal indication a federal probe in the town has been going on for some months. He was a detective at the time he quit.

There has been speculation since September in town of the probe.

Attempts to reach acting Police Chief Thomas Murphy on Friday were unsuccessful.

U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz said the integrity of the justice system requires police to be truthful.

“Allegations of a police officer making false statements are serious charges and undermine the public’s confidence in our criminal justice system,” she said in a prepared statement.

Romeiro quit Thursday in a hand-delivered letter to Murphy, one day before the charges were lodged in federal court.

“Please accept this letter as my resignation from the Stoughton Police Department, effective immediately,” Romeiro wrote in the letter.

Romeiro is the third Stoughton police officer to resign abruptly amid a federal probe. At least one person has been called before a federal grand jury in the case.

Anthony Bickerton, 60, a police detective, retired without warning on Sept. 11 after 30 years on the department. Two weeks later, on Oct. 13, longtime Patrolman Lino Azul also resigned suddenly.

Both officers, like Romeiro, handed Murphy a brief letter from the department that gave no reason for their departure.

Town Manager Mark S. Stankiewicz called the series of resignations a “troubling coincidence.”

Detective who quit charged with lying to FBI in investigation
By Shelley Murphy
Globe Staff / November 21, 2009
A day after a detective abruptly resigned from the Stoughton Police Department, he was charged yesterday with making false statements to the FBI during an ongoing investigation into corruption.
Discuss
Arlindo Romeiro, 37, was charged with one count of making false statements and representations while being interviewed by FBI agents on July 13 “regarding an ongoing corruption investigation.’’ He is charged in a federal information, which generally signals that a defendant has reached a plea agreement and waived his right to have evidence presented to a grand jury.
“The integrity of our justice system requires police officers to be truthful when questioned regarding any subject and particularly in corruption matters,’’ US Attorney Carmen Ortiz said in a press release announcing the criminal charge.“Allegations of a police officer making false statements are serious charges and undermine the public’s confidence in our criminal justice system.’’
Romeiro’s lawyer, Daniel W. O’Malley of Quincy, did not return telephone calls yesterday. A Stoughton police dispatcher said the department would not issue any information about Romeiro or comment on the case until Acting Chief Thomas Murphy returns to the office Monday.
Romeiro was not arrested. He has been ordered to appear in US District Court in Boston on Dec. 7 for arraignment.
Stoughton Town Manager Mark Stankiewicz said Romeiro had been on the force for about eight or nine years and delivered a one-page letter to the chief’s office about noon Thursday announcing his resignation, effective immediately.
The federal charge against Romeiro “goes to the credibility of the department,’’ Stankiewicz said.“This unfortunately damages the public trust of the department.... If there’s wrongdoing in the department, it needs to be found out, and it needs to be cleaned up.’’
He added that it was disconcerting that two other officers, one who retired and another who resigned, have also left the department abruptly within the past few months.
Romeiro is the first officer to be charged since the FBI launched an investigation earlier this year into allegations of theft and possible corruption by Stoughton police officers. A few months ago, FBI agents showed up at a Portuguese social club on Washington Street in Stoughton, pulled two flat-screen televisions from the wall, checked the serial numbers to confirm they were stolen, and carted them away.
The investigation has been fueled by allegations made by a longtime informant for former Stoughton police detective Anthony Bickerton, ccording to several people familiar with the investigation who spoke on condition of anonymity. They said the informant, who has a lengthy criminal record, began cooperating with authorities after he was arrested on a number of charges.
Bickerton, who is a member of the Stoughton School Committee, retired from the Police Department in September after 30 years on the force.
Brockton lawyer Joseph Krowski, who represents Bickerton, declined to comment yesterday on the FBI investigation and said Bickerton “has done nothing wrong.’’

He is a retired judge turned attorney. He has gotten severly ill. He was the one that Manny first hired. He has turned down alot of cases due to his illness. He is extremely well liked and respected in the Dedham courts. He gets what he wants from bench trials. He doesn't do jury cases if you've noticed. And that would tell us WHAT? It has seemed once he can't get a bench trial with a judge (former co worker) he bows out of defending people. Yes, he did get Rozie off.

Your article was in todays Enterprise. Loved the part that Tom Murphy couldn't be reached for comment on Romeiro. It's better than his usual bS sling. It's under investigation. And who will be next? Stayed tuned. Romeiro was a cop I think it said 7 years. Didn't take him long to learn the meaning of SPD officer. Lie, etc. He is facing up to five years in prison, three years probation, and $250,000 fines. Yeah, ok and who will foot that bill? If probation is like Manny's he'll do NOTHING.BOS Anzivino has heard nothing of any FBI investigations of the police. Is he DEAF, BLIND? OMG. What next?

Is Tony Bickerton still serving on the School Board? Is it a volunteer or paid position?
If so - Why hasn't he resigned from that role, too?
