I m also in a dilemma tht wethr my act of cuttng hair wud be a disgrace for the god or not....realy..in a gathrng of my frnds i m always afraid thtwhen the moment wud come when one of my frnd wud crack a silly joke on santa banta...or simply on a fool sardar...i wanna show them tht the sardars r not just a mattr of joke ...moreovr...u canntnegate the fact tht grls r not bothrd about our long hairs...realy believe me my grlfrnd ...she is a nonsikh..wants me to cut my hair saying tht i wud look bettr in othr hairstyle...i thnk..many of the celebrities and famous personalities ,who r sikh have cut there hairs...and despite of this they r doing very well in there professions...so the conclusion is tht cuttng hair will not affect ur life in wrng way neithr it will affect ur carreer...

I think that for this topic you need to think of your own needs. Your parents are probably very touchy about you cutting your hair, but try and talk to them. Sit down and have a discussion, try to see if they'll change their minds and don't be stubborn either, be willing to make a compromise. And remember, cut hair can grow back but family bonds can be easy to break, and no matter how hard you try the relationship you have with your parents may never be the same.

It's nice to see people appreciating my comment (and btw Manveer, I'm a girl (:)
True Sikh Girl - I'm actually really proud of you for keeping your stand during this forum. It's great to see young Sikhs standing up for what they believe in. Keep it up :)
I was also once like you. I felt pain when I saw a Sikh with a hair cut because I was always told a Sikh is someone who keeps their hair. But as I grew older, I began to ask questions about Sikhi because I wanted to have full faith in my religion and the only way I could do that, was if I had no unanswered questions about it. I am proud that I found the answers to all but one question. The questions I asked, helped to further build the intensity of my faith. The answers I received built my confidence in being a Sikh. However, I have not once met a person who could explain to me the reason why Sikhs keep their hair. Some say we should accept the way God has made us and keep hair, a part of our body that is natural and should not be altered. My question then comes to nails. Why then do Sikhs cut nails, also a part of our body that is natural and therefore should not be altered...
You've said in your comment that a turban is not a burden. I have thought countless times to wear a turban and even take Amrit (even as a girl). I know that I should not be thinking of hair and turban as a burden but what can I do? Too many times, my hair has reminded me that it is a burden. No matter how much I asked Waheguru Ji to help me keep my hair and not consider it as a burden, it constantly reminded me of how hard it is to keep it. From what I gather, you live in India. In countries like England, Australia, the US and Canada, it isn't nearly as easy keeping your hair and looking after it as it is in India. I'm sure every Sikh in a first world country has witnessed, and/ or experienced at least 1 incident of discrimination because of hair, beard or turban. Not only does the discrimination happen in schools but it happens before and after too. I have witnessed discrimination towards my masi Ji's 2 year old son who has a jooda. Don't even ask how many times I have witnessed discrimination in schools. And my dad has even had eggs thrown at him for the way he looks (he keeps his beard out and has a turban). I know you'll say that as Sikhs we should try to overcome these, but believe me, it isn't as easy as it sounds. I'm not saying that you are wrong at all. I respect you for keeping a strong stand in what you believe. Every young person should be like this (I'm only 14 and I've met a politician who I completely thrashed verbally in a debate). But you should try to understand the difficulties some people have on this forum. I'm actually lucky that I live somewhere where it isn't that much of a problem. Some people have it real hard. If you aim to stop these people from cutting their hair - good on you - go for it! But just have a read of a little bit of this forum. The people who are encouraging hair cuts seem so much more compassionate and caring than those who are not encouraging it. The knowledge you have posted on this forum so far has really led me to respect you regardless of the fact that we have different opinions. When sharing this knowledge, remember that some people here need compassion, they have been through a lot and they are really confused. It isnt all aout looking nice and pretty. Use your knowledge in a compassionate way and be thoughtful of people who need it. Try to understand the difficulties they face and the circumstances under which they are compelled to question their hair.

Hello everyone..
Many people here feel that sikh guys go for a hair cut to attract girls. But its not the case with everyone. Actually its hard to keep. Its hard when you wake up every morning and you know, you have to tie turban and tie beard. Its actually not hard to tie turban. What makes it hard is that you know, after 1-2 hours, you will start feeling the burden on head. I dont know how to put in words, but I am sure every sikh guy reading this shall Understand what m I trying to say. Since I am 23 years old, I am in a situation where its not easy to cut hair because you get emotionally attached after such a long time of keeping hair. ALso, ats hard to make up mind because you really dont know how would you look and also, its hard to face society initially (office, colleagues) I feel. At the same time, its not easy to keep hair because its time consuming and also, you feel as if you are missing some fun in life and its just one llife you got to live. lol. So, I hope how confusing it becomes for sikh youth at the end. I sometimes think of getting a haircut. But then, I start thinking that how would I go to barber shop. I have long beard and long hair. It would be embarassing to go to them and ask for haircut. And many such things. I think this all is happening because I dont have company of many sikh people. So, you feel like alone in the lot of similar people may be. But I again repeat, its not easy to maintain long hair. Beleive it or not.

Aww :) I would prefer not giving out any personal details, including email addresses. Most people here are very understanding and any problems you have are sure to be resolved. Still, if you feel the need to directly contact me, I couldn't decline. I'll just make another email address I suppose... But see how you go. Any questions, just post them here and I'll try my best to solve them :)

wow man, Exactly my story. I am 23 here in canada. I am in the similar condition you are. But now I have made a compromise with myself that I have to live my entire life like that. Sometimes I think, if I were clean shaven my life would have been totally different, I would be so happy. But believe me brother, I have seen those so called handsome "clean shaven" guys, who are messed up with their "cool" lives doing suicides, ending their lives. If you believe in god, just thank him for whatever he has given to you. I thank god every day for all the things I have got and I also accept sikh lifestyle, those unwanted hairs because this is also given to me by the same god, who has given me other special things.
Hope this makes you feel good.

HAHA..not only you brother, I would rather say 80% of the youth of our age category feels the same. And yes, what you said is right. We have only 2 options:
1.) Go for a haircut. Face the world. Face the challenges you need to go through. Live a cut-surd life. Then, if you feel, the proper surd's life was good, then go back to square one else, enjoy the new life.
2.) Dont try anything crazy (haircut). But also, stop crying about hair and all. Live life king size as a proper sikh through out your life. Beleive in the fact that you are doing something good though it may not be true.:D

So, I do feel that option 1 is more practical. But then option 2 may not be practical but a safe route.
Its strange sometimes how I come across so many sikh friends of mine and really its 1 out of 1000 I beleive who is actually 100% happy with the decision of keeping hair. All else have one or the other problem. Anyways, felt good to hear from you friend. Njoy life ..:)..Keep me updated in case you plan to do something different..;) and I shall also do the same. tc

hahaha, yeah I 100% agree with your options, I think I would never go on to cut my facial hair because I can't let my parents down. They think I am the best boy in the whole immediate and extended family, my grandparents would give my examples to my cousins to be like me, they believe I would never do anything wrong. But frankly saying, Keeping facial hairs is not an easy thing and I am against "Sikhs can't cut body hairs" thing. I have read guru granth sahib, no where guru ji says that keeping body hairs makes you more spiritual. Sometimes I think Sikh religion would have been the number one religion in the world, it has so many good things, spiritual "gyan", love for all, but this keeping hairs thing sucks.

Sometimes I ask 'kathavachaks' spiritual leaders, why do we keep our body hairs? does it help us to connect with god? mostly they don't have any answer, but sometimes they say, "our physical look make up different from others", we wanna look different, we are lions...something like that. Then I argue, Gurbani teaches us all human beings are equal, there is a god in everyone. we should see god in everyone. only our doings make us good or bad not our physical appearance. Then they seem to have no answer.

Its like a curse you gotta live with it!!I don't know why i am writing all this. I think i am just frustrated.

Well its Feb 21, and me and my cousin went to the barber. It was a long process but it was worth it. I love my haircut, i feel empowered and A LOT more happy! the weight from my hair and the turban is lifted and my head feels light and free. Now i have to face my dad about this. Thank you all for giving me my courage from all your great comments and everything else.

CONGOS, buddy! You finally did it. And the parents will come by it. They will understand that it is a life that you would like to live. Do let us know the experience and how you are tuned n for the second haircut. It would prepare others who follow the forum to understand the joy of a haircut. I believe that the first cut followed by the second are very important in the 'changed' lifestyle thingi. I am glad you are enjoying the new look and hope you have got over your father's feelings! Great going friend!

any of your friends get a haircut and they were uncut before? Lol parents act like the world just ended. They think getting a haircut will lead to drug dealing. LMAO
They all need to be taught how the world really works..... And after someone does get a haircut, parents pretend the kids getting spoiled, even of they act the exact same way they did before. Just a personal experience from when I first stopped keepin my hair.

Congrats for the initiative and at the beginning all parents do the same and react in the same fashion. Keep it up. All things will work out. Just be positive and enjoy the liberty that you now have. Surely you can lie low for a few days and share on the forum the haircutting experience!!!
