South Carolina should remove the Confederate flag from its Statehouse grounds. Regardless of what spin is put on favoring flying the Stars and Bars, that day is gone; it ended in 1864 and it is now 2007. The bitterness and separation of families and communities that existed during the War Between the States continues to poison generations of people who no longer hold truths for a cause, but rather hide their fears behind a period in time which has long left us. My great grandfather carried the Stars and Bars into battle, was taken prisoner by the Union, and released after the war ended to return to being a US citizen. He died a US citizen. Who of us, should carry such a grudge so long? The bitterness would have long left us if we had ceased to carry it.

There were many "flags" flown in battle...this particular flag was adopted toward the end of the war between the states. The flag represents the history of the South and regardless of what you believe, the war was not over slavery...it was state's rights. The slavery issue became forefront after Lincoln's address. When you go back in time in this nation's history, it was the North that brought the first slaves into America. Some of our greatest Presidents were slave owners...they didn't see the issue as wrong until it became political suicide. The North throughout the war used small children as "slaves" in their factories...until the early 1900's when too many children died in industrial accidents...both the North and the South have used people of all colors wrongly. The Dixie flag could be seen as a lesson in history...not oppression, if that is what is taught in school...

I have two flagpoles in my front yard.

I raise the stars and stripes and my confederate battle flag every morning without fanfare.

And there isn't a yankee big enough to stop me from flying the confederate flag.

I fought for the stars and stripes in Nam

My great grandpappy fought for the south in a losing cause. He knew the south would lose eventually but that old man had PRIDE.
Just like I do

Take Down the Confederate Flag.

I'd sooner take my pants down and have you kiss my a** before I would take down the stars and bars.

I bet your great grandpappy is real proud of you.

People coming from up north and others that don't live in S.C. who oppose the display of the Confederate flag on the State House Grounds should keep their ass, and their nose out of Columbia S.C. The Confederate flag is an honorable symbol of Southern history and heritage, a symbol of the valor and courage of all the Confederate soldier, white Southerners, blacks, Hispanics, Native Americans, and Jews. After all, it is the Confederate "Battle Flag." Removing the flag, especially under the circumstances, would give credence to the perception that the flag was a symbol of racism and evil. It would, in essence, be an agreement with the flag's critics. That is why it must fly. Moreover, it would only be the beginning. Even a compromise did not satisfy those who has sought to remove the flag. We've already tried that. We gave them the MLK Holiday Day and an African American History Monument erected on the State House Grounds, and they're still whinning. Next would come Confederate monuments and historical markers. What many non-Southerners and others who oppose the display of the Confederate flag seem to misunderstand about those who do so is that, for flag supporters (or those for whom the flag has positive meaning), it is not about any particular ideology. It is about identity.

I AM from South Carolina...born in Columbia...and remember the pride felt at the football field at the opening of home games when the Dixie flag was raised and "I Wish I Was In Dixie" played...the excitement and pride felt is still remembered...I also remember the "all black" school that was shut down and our school becomming 90%...then shortly thereafter Martin Luther King was assasinated...I remember being confronted in the bathroom because I then became a minority...nothing about it was pretty...I graduated in 1972...and lessons learned during that timeperiod is every person has a right to feel the way they do BECAUSE of history...NONE of it is pretty. I also remember the all white movie theatre's...the all white drinking fountains...and being told not to drink from the colored drinking fountain...you CAN'T get more southern than I am...the Dixie flag is still in my heart but I look at it as a symbol of people who stood up to government oppression...not slavery. Slavery was brought into this country by the NORTH...

I'm from the south myself and the fact is the south lost, but we are to get along with one another and stop fighting over who won. I'm a damn hillbillie and I'm proud of that myself that sounds better than the redneck word. You all need to read your history books it was my favorite subject in school & you will learn alot about your country and you will read this country once belonged to the indians we stole it from them. See this country doesn't really belong to us after all it belongs to the indians and the way you all talk sometimes you think it's yours and yours only.

(((CHEERS))) I agree with you here and I'm glad you think that way. The reason I said the south was smarter they had more to fight with than what the south had. If the south did have more they probally would had won the war. I'm happy your pappy felt that way.

Your people? If you are referring to your people as being the damn yankees, then you don't have a damn thing to be proud of. Sherman and his Union troops marching to the Sea pillaging and plundering of private property and the murder and rape of civilians, killing animals was so widespread that even the pro-Sherman biographer Lee Kennett wrote that "had the Confederates somehow won ... they would have found themselves justified ... in stringing up President Lincoln and the entire Union high command for violation of the laws of war, specifically for waging war against noncombatants. Why don't you read some updated history instead of the lies in the schools history book that is fed to our teachers and children. Ya might want to take that HAHAHA back.

You are on his case when he is right. I'm from the south myself born and raised in the south. Those history books are right and you can not sit in front of your computer and say they are not. Where did you go to school ? You never learnt anything or you'd know yourself it was not made up.

And another thing when the south had they're slaves and had them work so hard until they're fingers bleeds the owners slept with they're own slaves and had children by them. This country needed Lincoln to free them from they're abuse. It's all there in the history books and if you got cable watch the History channel it's all there and it's facts. You know it's the truth and the war happened just like I said it did. Read it you'll find it.

The Battle Flag is all about independent thinking..of refusing to be bullied by a larger and better armed opponent..of taking a stand and refusing to be budged. There is no bigotry here, there is no hate for black people or any other race..sure they were part of a system but it could have been any race in their place..this is about something bigger..better..this is about who we are!

Did ANYBODY catch my writing about slavery ships landing in the North? Did anyone ever figure out the North thought slavery was okay for many years? What about one of our presidents who's liniage today has proven he slept with his house slave and had children? Two boys he set free...I am speaking of Jefferson...the Dixie flag was NOT about slavery..it was state's rights...Mrs. Clinton calling for the flag's removal from the state's grounds is akin to calling for the removal of the Liberty memorial from New York...it is a symbol with history as well and the Irish that landed in New York City during the potato famine was another incident akin to slavery...anyone know their true family names? The people that processed imigrants changed names and birthdates...were the Irish treated with dignity? And how long was that incident in history after the War Between the States? Lessons learned in humanity for the Northerners? Don't think so... History...don't we love it...
