This really has been a half-cocked approach to assembling a roster. We now have no real starting SG (I hope J.J. can handle the role, but he's still very unproven), no experienced depth behind Howard and Battie and 3 6-9/6-10 small forwards, all talented enough to be starting. Really, you only need to two and somebody is going to end up playing out of position all season. Either Ariza at the SG spot or Lewis at the PF spot. Hedo is commanding over 6 million in salary-cap space, Carlos "turnover" Arroyo another four (and with Dooling looking like he's going to be the back-up point guard, I think 4 mil a year for a third stringer is a bit much). There is plenty of duplicate pieces on this roster taking up a lot of cap space. Now, I know NBA deals are tough to make, with the financing and all, but every effort should be made to ship out these pieces to bring in some more veteran big man help (Sacramento has some extra pieces in Kenny Thomas and Abdul-Rahim that are expendable with the signing of Mikki Moore, the emergence of John Salmons and the drafting of Spencer Hawes) or a starting quality Shooting Guard (Quentin Richardson from New York?, Corey Maggette from L.A....the Clippers do need another PG).

IMO, there a plenty of options that could be explored to make this team better and more balanced. I would like to be reading everyday about the different rumors popping up about GM Otis Smith and the deals he's trying to make. Instead we get the let's sit on our hands approach and maybe something will fall into our lap.

At this point, a good bargain would be someone who is a big presence in the middle, that isn't selfish, that can rebound, and is willing to play limited minutes, yet young enough and motivated enough to be a role player.

we need another quality big at the least! PJ Brown would be great but it doesnt sound like Otis is going after anything at that level... I just hope Rashard can adapt to the 4, without getting banged up too much.

I am truly amazed they have not done a trade and deal with Turkoglu yet. A 6'10" selfish shooter that has more off nights than on, is no longer needed. Get rid of this guy before his stock falls even further. Use him to get a quality PG over 6'3"...give them Jameer Nelson if you have to as a package!

Ever get the idea that maybe Otis is talking to other teams GM's, but that it is just not reported in the news? I doubt he says, hmm, lets talk to Sacremento, and first calls up a reporter and says,'Hey, im going to talk to Sacramento about Kenny Thomas, just so you know" He may put some pokers in the fire but not tell everyone, so the other gm's don't know who they might be bidding against, and dont drive up a price. If say Sacramento knew he wasnt talking to anyone else, they might ask a high price. But if they need a PG, and don't know who else the Magic are talking to, they might lower the price, knowing the Magic coould walk away and do a deal with another team. Just because it isnt in the news, doesnt mean Otis isnt talking to other teams.

What about Melvin Ely? I mean, he received no time in San Antonio (buried, like Darko was in Detroit), but when he was on Charlotte, he played 23 min, averaged 9.8 pts, 4.9 rebs. Looks like Darko's numbers to me. And we can probably get him for the minimum. Might be a steal.

Im telling you we need to trade off some of these bums we have on our roster and get some good players in here to back up our starters.... we need to waive off this agustine guy, get rid of Diener and outlaw, get rid of that bum Bogans and possibly even depart ways with Arroyo. There are good players in free agency still out there names like Corllis Williamson who is a great vet to have, Up and coming prospects like Mikael Pitreus from the Warriors would be an excellent choice, How bout a bull nosed Dale Davis who can play solid. I dont like that the magic are settling for these under achievers when there is really good talent still on the market. Otis get rid of these bums we have on our roster and get us some help for our Stars......

I still say give Otis Smith a chance. Then, after all the smoke clears, if all that happens is gain Lewis and lose Milicic, get rid of Otis. One thing I do like about Otis is that unlike Gabriel, he thinks before he commits. Of course how good a thinker he is is yet to be determined. I like keeping Gortat and Augustine. Let's see if draft picks other than Howard can amount to anything. I'm still not sold on Reddick, but he could become a fine player yet. Let's also not forget that Van Gundy will probably get more out of whoever plays for the Magic than Brian Hill ever did.

yeah there are alot of guys out there that are being paid the same amount as the scrubs on our team, esp garrity, and throw in bogans into the mix also, we could be getting more bang for our buck. if we're thin at the big man spot we at least need a taller point guard to exploit the weakness of the other positions, becuase we can't win fighting a two front war against other team's big men and again defensivly at the pg spot, trade off turk and nelson or arroyo and get a bigger name point guard, or even maggette, then sign a veteran big guy... anyone but cato would do.

So what's that about Cato being a free agent possibility? I thought we had let him go because he suck and we had to add a 1st round pick to get Darko. Now Otis let Darko go and might want this loser back? Basically what he did is giving Detroit a pick in change of a player he already had. Oh, and developing a youngster and leting him fly away in the meantime. Certainly clever.
