Warthen has his work cut out for him with Perez

Full story: Newsday

A $36-million pitcher on training wheels? With the Mets running out of patience with Oliver Perez, whose baffling psyche was on display again in Tuesday's loss, the only remaining option could be to start calling his pitches from the bench.

Warthen, unfortunately, is in the position of a parent that has an ADD 4 year old when it comes to Perez. Thirty six million dollars for a pitcher with a thirty six cent head. Perez sucks. He has been a freaking work in progress since the Mets got him. This has got to be Omar's last year. Also, he is a racist who only signs latino players. Take a good look at the Mets farm system. There's not one top prospect that is a black player or white player down there - all latinos. Omar: I know you are of latin decent but many of us aren't. Can you direct some of your attention to some top quality black and white ball players? I promise you that there are some great baseball players that aren't of latin decent. Let me introduce you to a new word - DIVERSITY.

Perez doesn't 'think' like a pitcher.

Hey Lennon how about Castro? If the pitching coach thinks he might need to call the pitches doesn't that mean the catcher doesn't know how to do it?? Mets should have picked up Ivan Rodriguez and said goodbye to Castro. The guy obviously can't call a game and all he provides hitting is the occasional HR or a big strikeout. Like to know how he does with RISP. I think it is probably horrible.

How do you explain Murphy, Evans, Neise and Kunz, all non-Latino's? Granted your points about Perez are correct. But the latino BS is just that old BS...

For all the money that they spent, they should have gone a little more for Lowe. No doubt about it. About the "upside", will we ever see it?

It's a good point about the catchers possibly being complicit. Maybe we'll see improvement when Schneider gets back, as he can call a pretty good game. I don't feel too good about Santos or Castro in that role yet--I think they still need some time before they can manage an entire pitching staff from behind the plate.

Not that a Major League pitcher should need it, though, especially someone who has started as long as Perez.

$36 million for a head case. Didn't we refuse to spend $20 mil on Manny? What an astounding waste of money for a pitcher who just refuses to get his head out of his ---.

You can not deny that the Mets entire organization has a higher ratio of latino employees and players. And the league as a whole has seen an increase in the number of Latino players. No big deal. BUT Omar has absolutely proven his preference. And at the expense of good players and success. Castillo and Oliver Perez are shinning examples of Omar's agenda. Perez should have never been re-signed. Yet Not one black American has been signed , by Omar, to a starting position or to even vie for a starting spot. after all these years I think that is wrong and I believe it is a fair discussion.
