Manuel put a ton of pressure on this kid, Murphy, who had all of three games with 11 PO's in the outfield in the minors.
Then he put Sheffield out there -- and yanked Murphy -- to provide some toughness to the lineup. The expectations for Murphy were unrealistic. The Mets lack of consistency in the deployment of Murphy -- leftfield, part time, full time -- speaks volumes about Jerry, a guy I otherwise admire.

I am not a Manuel fan and I think he's a terrible in game mgr. The truth is It was Minaya's decision to re-sign the second mgr in as many years who watched his team choke. Minaya also failed to get a power hitting corner outfielder (Why didn't he sign Raul Ibanez?) Bottom line is that the Mets are top heavy. There is a huge dropoff from the top four guys to the rest of the team and we have no farm system to speak of. minaya has ruined the Mets and he should be out of here.

Or why didnt he sign Booby Abreau who ended up signing for 5mill? Minaya is horrible!

"general manager Omar Minaya said he planned to use Murphy, Fernando Tatis and Jeremy Reed at first base" There you have it people. Omar has been running this team for years. Why else does it appear that either manger under Omar has performed so bad. BECASUE OMAR MAKES ON FEILD DESICIONS. Combined with his personal agenda the Mets will not win. he has no intuition for talent and is blinded by his own ego. Thank god he admitted it.

Murphy is just another in the long line of Mets players out of position. From Greg Jeffries, to Juan Samuel to HoJo to Hundley, to Jose Reyes (briefly). I've been a fan since the mid 70's and it amazes me that this organization is always trying to fit square pegs into round holes. They had Murphy in their system as an infielder, 2nd baseman by trade, yet they sign Castillo to a long term deal. Luis has played well this season, but with a guy like Murphy ready, why a 4 year deal for an aging player?
Hopefully they don't completely ruin him the way they did Jeffries.
Speaking of second basemen Keppinger wasn't bad either. Omar is blined by race.

He could have had Abreau as you mentioned and he could have had Hudson or Mark Loretta to play 2nd!
