An ace isn't an ace if he can randomly self-destruct and give up 7 runs in a game. Aces are consistent. This is why the Cubs rotation is so overrated.

I say we ship Zambrano for Peavy at the deadline....but we will still probably have to give up someone else. That's how much Zambrano's star has fallen. You never know when he takes the mound if you are getting jeckyl or hyde. I'm done sticking up for him to all the cardinals fans I work with here in Terre Haute. If he is going to keep pitching like he did today, he deserves every bit of criticism that he gets. Yes, we did win the game, but it wasn't because of ANYTHING that he did. So tell me again Carlos, why exactly do the Cubs pay you?

"Zambrano suddenly is compiling very strange statistics against the Cubs most heated rival.

After going 8-0 with a 1.37 ERA in 11 starts from 2005 through July 4 of 2008, his last three starts have been disasters.

Including his final two appearances from last season and Friday's game, Zambrano is 0-2 with 24 earned runs in 13 innings for a 16.61 ERA."

Ok, finally some discussion about Zambrano that isn't, "he's great, he'll have a great season..."

Zambrano wasn't just bad against the Cards. Zambrano had a nearly 6 ERA in the 2nd half of the season last year. And that includes his no-hitter!

If Z stays healthy he will have a big year. With 30 plus starts in a season there's bound to be a clunker or two. I liked the fact that he did not implode out on the mound. He needs to learn to take things in stride. He did that yesterday. He is maturing. There will be games that he will win with very little run support. It all evens out.

Somewhere along the line Zambrano lost his edge as a pitcher, and went from a promising, dominant type pitcher to a better than average type pitcher, who's rarely going to be downright nasty, but a pitcher who'll compete and give a team a chance to win, as long as the team scores some runs.

He'll always be remembered for his "I'm going to win the Cy Young" comment, that didn't work out so good.

The reason i was screaming for Hendry to make the trade to acquire Jake Peavy so badly, is he would have automatically been the Cubs #1 starter, as he's better than anything the Cubs have as starters, Zambrano included.

Call me crazy but I am more worried about Gregg as the closer than Big Z as a starter. Starting pitching means nothing if Gregg or the bullpen is inconsistent.

The bullpen has to get better. However, it was good to see Marmol bounce back from the walk and HBP to get the DP in end the game.

"Get Jake Peavy!" "Get Jake Peavy!" Yeah, we definitely need someone whose ERA is nearly 4 away from pitcher-friendly Petco Park. Since the huge park opened in 2004, Peavy has given up 48 HRs in 69 starts on the road, including 2 in 4 starts at Wrigley. Yeah, let's definitely get him in a Cubs uniform when the wind is blowing out.

What, did you think Zambrano was going to pitch no-hitters every start? Over his career, he's averaged about one HR every two games, and that's with Wrigley as his home field. Mortgaging the Cubs' future for an overrated Peavy would be a big mistake.

It is too early in the season to make any snap judgments. It is not unusual for pitchers, including Z, to be inconsistent at the start of the season. Z will be fine.

If Derek Lee could field a ground ball in the third inning and turn a double play as he should have, cubs get out of the inning without giving up any runs and Z probably gets a win.

If the team pays him to win games, and he gives away a 3-0 lead by being responsible for 4 runs in one inning; how is his paycheck on that game justified (in his own mind)?

Come on Carlos. You're better than that. You hung too many pitches over the plate and the Card hitters capitalized on them all.

I'd be more worried about the lack of clutch hitting if I was Lou.

Peavy's on the block because the Padres won't be able to afford him down the road. Taking on Zambrano's monster contract isn't in the cards.
