Its a painful reality when a star like Posada falls. I can imagine Jorge is probably thinking about the amount of time he has left in pinstripes or in baseball overall, combined with his will and desire to help the team succeed, is killing him having to lose the rest of the season to injury.I for one, hope he recovers well and is back gunning down silly base stealer's in the coming seasons.
However, the Yanks are better defensively without Posada right now. Molina handles the pitching staff extremely well and calls a great game. Would Posada have gotten this much out of Ponson or Rasner or Rameriz or Farnsworth or etc etc.. who knows? Posada's injury helps the Yanks off the field as well. A certain, aging, poorly offensive catcher currently occupying the backstop job at Fenway could be facing tough times as his contract ends. Posada's injury shows that throwing a bunch of money at your fan loved, team honed and color blead aging catcher may not be wise.'Tek can probably expect a small 1 or 2 year deal for far less money the Posada was given, to be offered to him soon. If he wants more he may have to change the color of his socks and join another team. Mets anyone? Point is,'Tek's future with the Bosox could be in doubt. As Buster Olney pointed out on ESPN.com . Sometimes throwing a bunch of cash at a soon-to-be free agent catcher who break down in his first year of the new deal, isnt always a bad thing ;). |

I think that was an insinuation of the Yanks need to get Damon back. Hmph! |

I have and always will respect Posada, he has more heart and guts than most players as evident in how broken up he is inside not to be able to contribute. If that BUM Pavano had showed 1/10th the heart that Posada has maybe he would be contributing something to the team instead of embezzling 40 million dollars. That being said though didn't Cashman have Posada due a full physical which maybe would have included an MRI on his throwing shoulder prior to investing 52 million dollars and 4 years to albeit a warrior but someone who is 37 years of age?

hey, who cares about what wally writes? his article gets published on boring days when nothing really exciting happens on the sport scene...
be nice guys.. let the guy keep in job writing garbage. |

I hate agreeing with this writer because most of his stuff is just crap. This time though he is right. Posada was not going to help the team this year. I say get the surgery now and come back in March ready to tear up the league. Though I have a feeling once he has the surgery he will be more of a DH then catcher.

I think this article is a heap of crap. Jorge is an integral part of that team. 2 years ago everyone wrote him off, then he came back last year with a blockbuster season. Sometimes players have downtimes but that is no reason to title an article the Yanks are better without him.

37 years old + full time catcher for 16 years =DH

Jorge is a trooper and overcomes a lot with his determination and heart... but shoulder injuries can ruin a career... he should get the surgery/treatment and plenty of rest and rehab - and come back strong for next year's spring training...

Jorge is the only player on the Yankees that is pure heart. He is a team player and IS an intregal part of the team whether he is playing or just on the bench. He keeps the morale up and is an amazing mentor for the younger players. Personally I think he should have the surgery now and come back in the spring and prove all the people who are down on him wrong. Good Luck Jorge. You truely are an asset to the game!

Stop feeling sorry for Jorge. He is not worried about putting food on the table or gas in his tank or paying for health insurance...

Wallace Matthews is out of his mind when he says the Yankees "had no choice but to sign Posada after a career season in 2007". Of course he had a choice. He could have said I'm not going to overpay a very old (for a catcher) for four years just because he had a great offensive season.

Posada should do what's best for him and the team and get the shoulder operated on now. It will give him enough time to get in shape and really see where his furture is Firstbase or catching. Next year a premier Firstbaseman will be on the market in the likes of Texiera, so having Posada as a Firstbase/DH would make that move questionable. He needs to be able to be a catcher at least 75% of his remaing contract to do the Yankees any good for the near future. It was another boneheaded contract by Cashman that leaves the Yankees with less room to wiggle. Posada should have gotten 2 years with option years according to performance. Next year they already have 2 DH's, Damon and Matsui. They don't need to bring back Giambi.
This year they need a Right-handed Left fielder, maybe a starter, but they may have one from the minors. I hate to admit this, but they may as well get the most out of the money they still owe Pavano. He starts rehab in the minors later in the week. And in late Sept. there is Hughes. So at best trade for Xavier Nady and sit tight. |

This is just a boring regurgitation of a Yankees management decision -- a post mortem with a little spin added. A real columnist with insight gained by access to the team and daily coverage duties would have written this days ago, well before Posada went on the DL... like right after the All Star break when he wrote that other mess about Giambi, Pettite and their history of performance enhancement drug use. Conversely, I suspect Mr. Matthews takes performance deterioration drugs and should be tested by management before his next salary review.

"They need a lefthanded-hitting outfielder and a starting pitcher"
ummh...If you watched any of the games you'd realize they need a right handed outfielder. |

Wally will never ever be anything more then the total jerk that he is.
I think Jorge should have the surgery now so he can be ready to go when '09 begins! Good luck Jorge, you've been a high spirited leader and a true asset to the Yankee organization. Get the shoulder fixed and come back strong! Your enthusiasm is second to none! |

jorge is still cool
