Mets' bullpen falters again

Full story: Newsday

The Mets ' bullpen blew another one. Pedro Martinez pitched six steady innings and left with a four-run lead, but the team's shaky relief corps couldn't hold off the NL Central's cellar-dwelling Pirates, ...

the bullpen is not pitching well because it is burned out .for most of the season most of the starters do not last more than 5 or 6 innings . santana and perez are the only ones i see going deep into the games

Steve, enough with the excuses. Plenty of Mets starters have been going deep in games lately including Perez and Santana.

The cold hard fact is the bullepn is atrocious top to bottom and its the same bullpen that destroyed the season last year. Omar..the wonderful GM has done NOTHING TO IMPROVE IT!

This pen doesn't over power batters, and can't throw strikes to save their lives. Disgrace.

Omar takes all the heat in the world for not fixing this dreadful pen.

Heilman shouldn't be taking the flight to DC....get him out of here already.

I love Pedro, but since 2006 his role as a starter has diminished. Six innings is no more than a middle relief role. Maybe that is his role in today's game. The bullpen really sucks, they haven't performed since the win streak a month ago. The wild card is falling out of reach, so winning the division is a must. They can't continue to loose to last place teams and hope to finish first!

The Yankees sent Kennedy to the minors, why not do the same with Heilman, maybe it will shake up the rest of the group.

I do not think that the reason for the bullpen not pitching well is due to lack of innings from the starters. This bullpen was pitching horribly from day one and in fact were the primary reason for last year's collapse. They are simply a gutless bunch of overpaid pitchers. They create more innings and hitters to face than the starters not going long distance. How many times does this happen - a lefty is brought in to face two guys and the inning is over. He gets neither guy out and they now bring in the pitcher who was supposed to start the 8th inning, he gives up a couple of runs and is replaced by the guy who should have been saved to set-up the 8th inning of the next game. They still have a one run lead but Billie (quick to critique Perez but not as quick as he gives up tying runs in the 9th inning) Wagner gives up the tying run. We now go into extra innings. Our long relief pitcher (if anyone has seen this wreck last linger than 4 outs please advise me as I never see it happen - thank you Carlos Muniz) leaves us after 2 outs and bases loaded. Yet another relief pitcher comes in to walk in the go-ahead run. Too many pitchers come in for too few outs. They do far more to wear each other out than what is left for them to do. Every team takes their starters out after 7 innings these days. The Mets go thru many many many pitchers once the starter has been taken out. This team has patched together LF, RF and second base for most of the season. Pedro and seemingly everyone they have gotten to replace him (several of whom have pitched well enough to win) have missed so many starts. With all of that - this team would still be 12 games over .500 if this bullpen could at least hold a 3 run lead. There can be NO EXCUSES for this bunch. They are also one of the highest paid bullpens in all of MLB. They are Horrible.
I have MLB extra innings package and will occasionally catch the end of several ball games of interest to me. There are no teams with >.500 records that have to sweat out wins the way the Mets bullpen forces their team to do. They are GUTLESS.

The ONLY good thing that can come out of this season is that the bullpen has to be completely overhauled in the offseason. No more wondering/hoping if Heilman will 'get it'. He won't, not here. He is what he is at this point. A guy with limitless potential that mentally cannot pitch in a city like NY.

Schoenweis and Feliciano are one in the same, neither can be counted on to consistantly do their job. Sanchez may never be what he was before the cab ride.

Smith may be the only part worth salvaging, only because he's so young and may get past his growing pains.

Even Wagner is no sure thing. That's putting it nicely. They better start using Kunz in something that resembles a pressure situation to see if this kids has what it takes to someday be the closer.

For all the stuff that Beltran, Reyes, Santana, Delgado, Perez have gotten this year from fans, it's been the bullpen that will ultimately be responsible for the disappoinment that I think is coming.

Watching the late innings with this bullpen is like watching someone sink slowly beneath the surface of quicksand : it's slow, it's agonizing, it's fatal. But unlike a real victim whose suffering ends, ours goes on indefinitely. What a way to go.

They all blow!

Are you kidding, how can we make it to the playoffs when we can't even hold a 4 run lead on the Pirates who no longer have Nady and Bay.

WHAT A JOKE!!!!

THE METS AND YANKS WILL BE OUT EARLY THIS YEAR!

Excellent post! But I don't think they're gutless, I think they just stink. But good analysis - no one has summarized it better.

The choke is starting early this year. Losing to the lowly Pirates at home in late innings.
No wonder the NY MU TS have a liftime losing won/loss record.
I was hoping the choke would be at the end of the season and the NY MELTS would do an historic, classic choke like last year.
It couldn't happen to nicer fans.
The fans that tell what other teams should be doing, yet their team is a perennial loser !!!!
You gotta Breave !!!!
I hope things get better at the new FLUSHING TOILET... AKA Ch%%%YBANK PARK!!! what a name sellout of Shea..... The NY MESS no tradition/no pride/no sucess.

"Mets Bull Pen Falters Again"
You could write that headline in the second inning and go home early.
Does Heilman have options left? If yes, send him to N.O. or Binghamton to get his head screwed on straight.
Pitch all the recent call-ups and see what they can do. It can't be any worse than the over-paid under-performers Omar has collected.

And people were shocked when Schoenweis & the rest of the bullpen were booed at the home opener? These guys stunk last year, and continue to stink this year! We'd be in 1st place by several games if it weren't for our bullpen.

i dont get it, we take a slumping middle reliever and make him the closer?
Heilman sucks, he's had every opportunity.
Please do not pitch this guy anymore.
This bullpen needs some changes.
