if the Twins would have had the lead (rare this year) Garry wouldnt have been complaining about a shortened game..you can tell they are playing tight now , from the manager ondown

The Twins lose the game in the first inning and the manager spends the rest of the night alibiing how he was hosed because the umpires insisted they try to get in five innings and finish the debacle. Why doesnt Gardenhoser put the blame where it really belongs - on the completely bungling amateurish performance by management and players since the start of the season. Ive been a Twins fan since 1957 so Ive seen and heard it all. Cant wait for the annual spring ten game loosing streak - so far its only two in a row so theres only eight to go. Then on or about June first they can bargain basement the recycle shop/factory outlet rejects they picked up in the off-season.

Get use to outdoor baseball in the spring folks. Glad it wasn't my tickets. What a snafu trying to play this in a downpour. Fortunatley some one wasn't hurt playing in this mess. Pictures of things to come without the retractable roof.

The Twins seem headed for a long, rough season. The strategy of a starting pitching staff that has a lot of good pitchers but no great one isn't working. Last night Santana made fools out of the Phillies with more than good stuff. He has an excellent mind and focus; he knows exactly what he is doing. He has reached a new level of excellence. He's a different pitcher--wiser and still with the superb command of his pitches if not quite the velocity. Santana is a good bet to win another Cy Young award this year. He will make the Hall of Fame. Meanwhile, the Twins starters will settle down and each approach 200 innings and achieve their high 3 low 4 ERA's, but it's unlikely that any of them will ever come close to Santana quality at any time. The Twins should have paid Santana to stay. Liriano would be a better pitcher with Santana around, too.

I wonder how upset Gardy would be if the Twins were up a few runs? I just don't think the team can whine about the circumstances. How about going out and playing the game to win on your own, without blaming umpires, etc. I wonder if the demotion of casilla will rub off on the remaining Twins? The team is still in the hunt (it's only May afterall) but cannot keep up playing at this pace. The Twins on paper are a legitmate contender for the AL central this season, but need to improve in many areas. I wish Tolbert success and an healthy dose of influence to hustle!

Normally I agree with you and I do about Santana, he is a step above almost all pitchers, but $140 million contractual commitment? What if his arm had gone bad and they had been stuck with that contract? It would have crippled them for years. Remember, they do not generate the revenue that the Met's and Yankees do. Those teams can afford to take that kind of risk, the Twins cannot, that is reality. IMHO anyways.

Losing Santana (Hunter too) hurts the Twins a lot. It's hard to develop talent only to lose it eventually to the handful of teams that can outspend 90% of the league. The Twins just cannot match those salaries. The Mets & Angels can withstand the risk of spending that money. Can you imagine if the Twins gave those long-term contracts? One blown-out arm or deminished skills and the team becomes the Pirates. It's a bad system from our vantage point, but 'it is what it is' and so we think what might have been ... brachiosaurus wrote: The Twins seem headed for a long, rough season. Thanks to all for the reminder of what it is to be a Twins' follower. It's agreed that the Twins can't and shouldn't try to outbid the money towns. The team wouldn't be the Twins. But with the frustration so far and after seeing Santana last night, it seems such a shame that he should develop in the Twins system only to benefit someone else. Perhaps the Twins can't keep all the great talent that they nurture along, but trying to hang on to one or two guys might make all the difference. And, though many would disagree, the Twins should not spend the big bucks on a free agent that comes from outside the Twins' system unless they can cut an excellent deal. With that thought, let's hope that the Crede contract pans out. If Baker and Liriano come around, as they have showed signs of doing lately, it won't be so tough to watch him pitch on ESPN.

Home teams have the advantage on weather situations. Not only the 4.5 inning official game if they are ahead, but if the game is started is up to the team. The O's wanted to get this one in and they did, all things being equal, they probably shouldn't have played.

Latino players don't seem to progress here. Why draft or sign them if they never work out? Manny was just suspended for 30 games. Remember "Juany Rincon", another failed Latino player. I am not blaming the Latino players as their are plenty of great ones but they just don't ever thrive here. p.s. Tony O, Zolio, etc. was a long time ago.

Just switch this around though. Would the Orioles want to get this game in had the situation been reversed and the Twins were winning. Just think about THAT for a min. I bet the game would have been canceled so the Orioles had a chance to come back if that were the case. Baseball is supposed to be 9m innings not 6 and it was 'convienient' for Baltimore to stop the game.

Enough of this paying for a championship nonsense. You think if there were salary caps, would Hunter and Santana still be here? I'd like to err on the optimistic side and say yes...
