Maybe the Dodgers should keep Schmidt for his bat.

two months left in the season and these dodgers are looking mediocre lately.

And they have the best record in the Majors. Some people are never satisfied. Maybe you should switch sports.

They had a 3-4 week.....on the road in St. Louis and Atlanta, and with Manny going something like 3-20 on the trip. Not great, but easily could have been 4-3 if not for a defensive breakdown on Saturday.

As long as Kershaw keeps pitching well, and Billingsley pitches like he did yesterday, I like our chances

This sure beats last season and the agony of watching Andruuw Jones.
If Schmidt can contribute in more ways than pitch, that takes the sting of the last two yeras away some also.
I don't mind then looking a bit "mediocre" during this time of the season, all teams go through that each season. I am more than happy they are doing now as apposed to October.
My only real concern now is that Torre should be playing Castro more. He is still on the hot streak with the bat when he does play and on one of those "mediocre" type nights he can spark a fire.

Hot streak? He got a single yesterday, but don't forget that he was a .228 hitter with a .270 OBP over the last 13 seasons and hit .193 in 2008 (161 AB's) and .180 in 2007 (89 AB's). He also only has 5 lifetime stolen bases.

I think they are using him the right amount.

Offensively what concerns me is Orlando Hudson's strikeout totals. He is already at 75, which puts him on pace for 116. Way too much for a guy that might hit 10 HR's, and far more than his career high of 98. Strikeouts, like pop ups, can't advance runners.

And not to beat a dead horse, but our starters have to go longer into games. Torre is carrying 13 pitchers, and that severely hinders offensive and defensive replacements, especially like yesterday when Blake was unavailable.

What!?!?! Castro? Are you kidding me? The last thing we need to worry about is how much playing time Juan Castro gets. I mean, he's a good guy and all and has a good glove but he's basically an average player at best. Teams like the Padres and Nationals are full of guys like Juan Castro.

I really have no worries at this point. Except maybe I'm slightly concerned about Manny. He's been missing some really FAT pitches. Is he simply in a slump or (1) is his hand bothering him or (2) is the steroid issue bothering him?? I'm guessing he's just in a slump because he appears to be okay in body and mind.

God, do we have a killer bullpen now or what??? Honestly, the guy that worries me the most is Broxton. He seems pretty hittable all of the sudden. Starting with that game in San Diego where he got torched in the 9th. He seems to "kind of" be rebounding lately but I'm not sold yet.

Broxton
Sherrill
Kuo
Troncoso (seriously!!!! bad azzzzzz)
Belisario
Mota (okay...he's hot/cold..just chucks it up there)
Elbert last night looked great.
McDonald looks to be coming into his own.

In the post season we only need 5-6 innings from the starters.

What guys will they carry on the pitching staff in the postseason? You definitely don't need more than 11, with the days off and only needing 4 starters.

Assuming all guys are healthy, starters would be Kershaw, Billingsley, Kuroda, and Wolf.

Broxton, Sherrill, Kuo, Troncoso, Mota are locks.

The last two spots would come from Belisario, Weaver, McDonald, Elbert.

I guess it would be Weaver and Belisario, but remember what McDonald did last year.

Well, this was their 2008 post season staff...
Pitchers: Lowe, Billingsley, Kuroda, Maddux, Kershaw, Beimel, Wade, Broxton, Saito, Park and Troncoso.

They carried 4 or 5 starters depending on how you count them. 4 starters MAX is what they need this year. Everyone you mentioned + Belisario is an absolute must. The last spot is a tough one though.

My gut tells me Weaver because he's great at eating up innings. I'm not sure Kuroda (who I view as our 4th starter on this list) would be comfortable or effective in that role.

Thinking about the rotation, who would you open with? If it's the Phils and all those lefties, I'd go Kershaw, Bills, Wolf and maintain that rotation unless Kershaw or Wolf isn't effective.

I know...way too early for this but it's fun to talk through the possibilities.

Yes, I would think this season is a hot streak for castro, he has nevr hit as welll as he has this year and he has specifically credited Don Mattingly for the help. He is 26 for 78 and that is a smooth .333 BA and he hit been hitting over .300 for the month of July. I am not saying that he should take anyone's place in the lineup, but he is there and has been hitting consistently while he is being treated like a step-child with only a glove. It makes sense to get the hits out of him while he is hitting well rather than cooling him off on the bench. It's these streaks that players get hot on that get a team over the humps when nobody else is producuing all that well. I would have liked to see Juan play more against the Cards last week thats for sure.

Castro knows his role on this team. If he plays, Furcal or Hudson sits. It's not like he's driving the ball - he has 3 doubles and a home run in 78 official at bats. That would project to 25 extra base hits on the season.

As of today, Hudson has 39 extra base hits and furcal has 26 (in an off year). there is no way Castro will play more unless there is an injury. Remember, Castro hit .383 in Spring training and didn't even make the team on Opening Day!

If Kershaw continues to pitch nearly as well as he has, you have to like him against Philadelphia. But if the dodgers have the best record in the NL, and the giants or Rockies take the wild card, the dodgers would most likely open against the Central winners - Cubs? Cardinals? Brewers?

The Brewers have fielder as a big lefty hitter, but the Cubs and Cardinals have more righty heavy hitters.

With that in mind, you'd think Torre would start with Billingsley and I couldn't argue against it.
