Good win. Much needed. Hopefully the players will sleep well tonight and win again tomorrow.

Pelfrey has been ptching very well of late - his last three starts should have been wins for him - he was great tonight - look, Wagner really blew it tonight but all closers do throughout a long season - even M.Rivera has lately. But this team really needs consistency and yet the injury bug is biting us hard - Church's bat was steady as was Alou - they are missed. I would love to see Chavez's bat get hot and when is Pagan coming off the DL? GO METS!!!

billy wagner? can anyone say "armando benitz?" benitz averaged about 30 saves a season for the METS but he also had a penchant for blowing saves in must win situations. Wagner does the same. I am not a Yankees fan but the only lights out reliever is Rivera. Wagner is a AAA reliever compared to Rivera.

They're too old. They have no farm system. No heart. Way to go, Minaya. You set us back another 5 years.

had the Mets lost this game, fans would have strung Billy Wagner & Willie to the nearest post. However in this case I can't blame Willie for this. I felt bad for Pelfrey. He pitched the game of his life, better than the 1-nil heartbreaker against the nats a few weeks ago. Just phenomenal. Then of course Wags comes in & blows it. One of these days, Pelf going to rack up wins. It's too bad, but thank God for Beltran, otherwise hell would break loose. Now hopefully this steers them in the right direction. Johan against Haren this afternoon. Great pitchers duel. Hope the Mets can win 2 of 3 before the Rangers come in for 3 before heading to Anaheim & Denver for 6 ( last West Coast trip of 2008). LETS GO METS!!!!

Do us all a favor stay off this forum and go jump on another bandwagon.. You're obviously not a real Met fan.

Glad they pulled it off....I felt bad for Pelfrey as I am sure Wagner did too.....it happens, part of the game....but at least they came back and won.
Being a Mets fan is such a roller coaster ride....lol

Willie your saved again ,Beltran got you out of some deep s*** again.Making the right decision is what this game is all about but why not give the kid another batter the way he was pitching ? He couldn't have lost the game maybe made it 3 to 2 or he may have gotten a dbl. play ball who knows but you eascaped the ax another day ? Better win today for this guy or he'll want to go back to Minnisota !
Thanks for the source

I'm a HUGE Met fan, and you know what? It's hard to argue with Bill.
When you dump nearly your whole farm system for aged Latin guys with creaks in the knee, bunyons that put 'em out for 2 years, etc. etc. that IS moving backward 5 years.
OTOH, they almost won it all in '06. If that had happened, no one would be complaining about Omar.
As it is though, we've got a sub-
.500, inconsitent, OLD team that got swept by the AAAA Padres. If they DON'T win this year (which, face it, is likely) will you feel the team has moved forward going into next year? I'd rather have the young developing guys on the Padres!

How do we know we have no farm system if we never give them a chance? Instead of calling up guys who deserve it, we call up Abraham Nunez. We have guys playing pretty good in AA and AAA. Valentino Pascucci looks interesting and can play 1b and Of. Finally we called up Aguila, but he should've been up here a month ago. At least the young players will bring some energy, even if they do struggle.

If aging over the hill players is the direction we're going to go with, why not take a flyer on Bonds? Bonds would be a media sponge, which might actually help some of these players. Everyone would focus on bonds, taking the heat off willie and the rest of the team. Just a thought.

Great game by Pelfrey. He's really coming alonmg this year despite the record and his last three starts have been excellent. Mets are struggling but are still my team.

Kevin,
Wasn't that Mariano on the mound last weekend that blew 2 saves against the mighty Royals?

No closer is automatic. Wags has had a bad week, but for most of the season, he's been solid. The guy with the 1.73 ERA is not the guy we should be calling out.

All relievers blow saves. Rivera blew a save the other day against Kansas City. Jose Guillen hit a home run. The Red Sox have torched Rivera in save situations the last three years especially at Fenway Park.

BIG DEAL they won a game.
Talk to me when you win 5-6 in a row and 17 out of 20 then I believe you guys have turned it around. I can't see it, not with the pitching the way it is. Like Kevin said is Wagner turned into Benitez. What's that saying about people in glass houses?????????

Wagner's big mouth isn't justified by his performance on the field. To compare Wagner and Rivera is absurd. How many WS rings are on Wangner's finger (hint 0). As a Met fan I'm tired of seeing Wagner blow multi-run leads over and over again when asked to get only three outs - Then have the b@lls to call out his team mates to perfom better. Even when he gets saves he usually gives up at least a run. Sorry, he sucks.

The Mets have a horrific minor league system, which if they hope to be a perennial contender needs to be addressed. Pascucci is a 30 year old journeyman. He has a "cup of coffee" with the Montreal Expos. He is not a prospect.

Anyone but Wagner. At this point even Heilman would be better(ok - that's a stretch).
BTW - Pelfry should have completed that game genius.
