Cards notes: Encarnacion 'barely playable'

I'm with Tony LaRussa on this. Let Juan Encarnacion get better and hopefully,just help this team to the playoffs.Following an examination of Encarnacion's knee on Monday, the Cards' medical staff recommended that he remain available. However, La Russa said on Tuesday that he does not believe Encarnacion will be able to start a game for at least a week. That would mean Encarnacion was out of the lineup for 12 days, nearly the length of a disabled list stint.

"I imagine we'll keep him active and just be careful how we use him," La Russa said.

"If it's going to flare up when you use him, it's pretty tough to play with emergency-only guys for 16 days. But it's tough to disable him too. So I think we just have to wait and see."

Encarnacion said that the knee is not appreciably worse than it has been for approximately a month, dating back to before the All-Star break. He played through the condition, but on Sunday he was scratched from the starting lineup due to his knee troubles.

"I'm able to do what I've been doing," Encarnacion said. "It's sore but I've been handling it. I've just been dealing with it."

La Russa did not rule out that the Cardinals might make a move with Encarnacion in the coming days. Skip Schumaker makes an obvious candidate for a recall from the Minors if St. Louis elects to disable Encarnacion.

"If a guy is emergency-only, that's OK for a few days, maybe a series," La Russa said. "But that's a difficult way to play. I have no problem with him being emergency-only for this series if it means he could be more available this weekend."
