Full story: Newsday

The Mets could easily afford to shrug off Friday night's 5-2 loss to the Reds, even though it stopped their 10-game winning streak and dropped them a game behind the victorious Phillies in the National League ...

John Maine has failed to pitch five innings in each of his last for games. This may be reason for concern. The Mets had an opportunity in the seventh, but the big hit by Fernando Tatis did not happen. He hit into a 5-4-3 double play and that virtually ended the night for New York. As David Wright noted, let's go get 10 more in a row starting Saturday Night In Cincinnati.

Maine was the starter that I expected the most from other than Santana and he has not come through. In spring training he was dominating and looked like a 20 win pitcher. He hasn't come close to that type of pitcher even in his victories.

You know what is strange about modern day sports is all the coaches. You have a manager plus: bench coach, hitting coach, bullpen coach, pitching coach, first base and third base coach. With all these coaches-how come so mnay players play so lousy?

Maine, in contrast to Perez, is definitely more of a pitcher (Perez, conversely, is more of a thrower than a pitcher). He (Pelfrey) still has a few regressions, but shows us flashes of being an above average starter. Plus, the offense let him down Friday nigth and Wrigth's misplay on the hopper down the line didn't help much at all. Still and all, though, Maine should have been able to close out that inning.

Daily Horoscope for December 22

Scorpio

It will be easy to let things get on top of you today, especially if you're already feeling rather tired and listless. Do yourself a favor and keep away from anyone who often makes you feel a bit fed up or defensive, because they're the last person you want to be around at the moment. They'll make your spirits sink down to your ankles in a flash, and who needs that?
