Good at not good enough

Full story: Akron Beacon Journal

DETROIT: It was a game in which the Indians' mastery was clearly in evidence. Through injuries and slumps, unexpected setbacks and disappointments, the Tribe has become expert at playing just badly enough to ...

Trade CC before he hurts his arm or gets sick on burgers.
Time to get ready for next year.
I'll bet the Cubs, Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox, Arizona, San Diego, Mets would all be interested.

CC will be traded in the next 3-5 weeks.

Let's move on to the real issue: Peralta is killing this team again! Can anybody take the position that he is great for this team? His offense is horrible, and his range in the field is worse. He turns groundball outs into singles. Is there any SS on a contending team in the last 10 years who was worse? If we're gonna keep Adrubal in the majors and force feed him, then at least put him at SS.

The Tribe is going thru the motions like an also ran in September.

Wedge should take some lessons from Ozzie. Baseball is not an adult game, so show some selfish kid in you. Billy Martin did it best and got great results.

Sad to see the season of promise spinning away. Realistically the team is about a month away from the critical point of either fighting to stay in it or blowing up the season and making major moves for next year and beyond. Around the All Star break the contenders start looking for short-term help and are willing to make trades. Probably a bit too soon right now.

I agree with Tired's take on Peralta. In the situation that he had in the 8th (Bases loaded, 1 out, 2-0 count), you need to be SELECTIVE as a hitter and not flail the bat at a pitch just because it's a fastball. A walk in that situation scores a run, keeps the inning going, and puts added pressure on a young pitcher. Major changes may be in store for this team in the next month, and the only position players that are safe in my eyes are Grady and Victor. This appears to be 2005 all over again.

I wonder if we can get 6 quality position players, 3 starting pitchers, and 3 back end bullpen guys for him?

I see only 3 untouchables on this team: Fausto, Cliff Lee and Aaron Laffey. This means...(cue shock SFX!)...Sizemore and Victor are also available. Neither has shown he can be a consistent impact player. Grady strikes out far too much, doesn't hit for a high enough average, goes into prolonged slumps, and doesn't hit in the clutch. Okay, he's cute. So what? Victor...his power is gone, poof. His average is sinking like the Titanic. His best days are, unfortunately, behind him. No, in this "rebuild" of the Tribe, no position player is sacred. We simply MUST stop overvaluing our players. It's getting us nowhere fast.

Keep all pitching except for CC and Byrd. Keep Sizemore and Marinez.

You have way over valued CC. You can get one quality position player. A top AAA and a top AA player. Maybe some bullpen help.

Francisco, Cabrera, Sizemore and Martinez would look great if they were surrounded by legit quality. Never trade pitching unless you are getting pitching in return.

OKAY...say the Tribe rallies and makes the playoffs this year...who are they going to beat? The Red Sox will pummel them IF they make it. So in conclusion, what are we doing here? Maybe we SHOULD trade CC for some hitting and young studs.

Anyone interested in knowing the Tribe's record last year at this time? 37-23 (1st place)...and this year (right now) 28-35 (third). The difference? THE BAN ON SUPPLEMENTS. There, I said it.

It was a poor attempt at sarcasm to point out all the holes needed to be filled.

Of course. I just want to see high performers added at first, third, and right or left. I can live with Cabrera and another soft hitter at second. Add Sizemore, Martinez and Francisco and you have a solid team. Still like Franklin and Choo but Ben seems like the best all around player of the three. This Carroll, Blake, Delucci, business has got to stop. Unsure about Garko. Time is up for Peralta unless he can handle second base. Am not even thinking about Hafner at this point.

So, if I'm following your theory, the Indians, Tigers and Yankees were the teams guilty of enhancing their performance in years past, while the White Sox, Cubs, Rays and Marlins are the ones now reaping the benefits of having always been pure?

I think among the things best lept simple are your approach in the batter's box, not your view of an entire sport.

I got it the first time around, but seriously Westbrook's injury added to Adam Miller's has to bring to the fore whether or not C.C. should be traded under any circumstances, even should we go 5-25 into the All-Star break. In any deadline deal not contingent on him signing long-term with the new team, you're looking at one prospect each from A, AA and AAA and some washed-up veteran. Witness Bartolo for Sizemore (30 games in AA), Lee (a solid AA record) and Phillips (half a season in AAA), plus Lee Stevens. I don't think Shapiro wants to open the new park in Goodyear with Fausto, Lee, Laffey, Sowers and probably an option-claimed Byrd with very little substance behind them. If we've gone down the bunny hole by the break, he'll need starting pitchers for C.C., and sadly that's not what's needed to secure this team for 2009 and beyond. I have no idea what position players are on his FA board this coming off-season, but dealing C.C. now would free up some salary for those purposes.

No, I don't see the Indians getting nearly as much for him as others think they'll get. They'd get more back trading somebody who is signed like Grady Sizemore, we all know he's going nowhere though.
