I can't believe he locked himself in for only 6.75 mil a year for 6 years.
WHAT A BARGAIN BOSTON! |

Good for him, his parents raised him well. He is not being greedy and is playing for the love of game. Too bad more players don't follow his lead.

Why should other players take less then they are worth? This isn't being greedy, just business.
Back to basics, why don't you have your employer reduce your pay since you don't earn it I am sure. It's not like Boston cant afford it. The Giants just signed Edgar Renteria to a two-year,$18.5 million contract that includes a third-year option for $9.5 million and he is OLD and on the way OUT. Justin, get a new agent, oh wait too late! |

What's sad is that this country considers a pro baseball player (i.e. someone who plays games for a living) to be worth more than say a fireman or a nurse or a teacher or someone who actually contributes to society

Does every post on here have to be negative? Wake up people take this as a positive just for the simple fact that he came from Woodland and was able to achieve such success is awesome, because our kids can relate to him being from the same town and hopefully give our kids something to aspire to and a damn good role model. Everyone who is picking this apart and finding any negative aspect you can find, get over it. Look how happy this man looks, what happened to just being happy that he is happy.

It is called insanely jealous, this was not given to him he worked hard for it I am sure. Good job ,keep it up.And yes are public servants who protect us should get paid more ,so help do something about that, but heck it is not Justins fault, so I quess you can just get over it. To Deb and Guy you must be so proud.

You are dead wrong. I am not the least bit jealous. Having big money brings it's own set of problems. Nor did I say it was Dustin's (not Justin's!) fault. Through his own talent and hard work, he has an opportunity to make that kind of money, and he took it. I can't fault him for that! What is interesting from a psychological and societal perspective is the skewed value that is placed on superstars of any ilk, be they athletes, actors, musicians etc. Ok, so these entertainers (and make no mistake, a professional athlete is an entertainer) entertain us for a while. But they don't really contribute much to the continued well-being of society, do they? And yet our society places such an extraordinary value on them. Besides, in these tough economic times, with foreclosures, joblessness, bailouts and bankruptcies on the rise, doesn't it remind you a little bit of Nero fiddling while Rome burns? |
Practicalities, I agree with what you wrote. I believe that the same people that put these entertainers on pedestals are the ones that are suffering in these hard times, yet spend all their hard earned cash supporting these multi millionaires. While these same people are struggling to make payment, find jobs or whatever hardship they are going through, their idols are living the big life.
I find it hard to believe that doctors that perform amazing surgeries upon the human body to give it more life are not getting paid what these athletes are getting. You have to remember, doctors can help giving you a second chance of life, atheles will not even come close. For those of you that think I am jealous, I’m not. Money has its ups and down and I have enough to live comfortably. I do appreciate that doctors saved my grandfather life after his heart attack. |

Oh sure, lets see--firefighters who attend strip clubs, teachers having sex with students and who knows if anything has been reported with regards to nurses. Yeah and pro athletes are not above the law either, but Dustin is a special player who plays the game the right way and is actually contributing something positive to our society, unlike our illustrious California State Supreme Court. |

Hey, Hey, Hey, if doctors were getting paid like pro athletes were, you, I and and large majority of the middle class would be going straight to the poor house---because our health premiums would be catastrophic. |

Nice story about a very solid young athlete. Woodland athletes are doing us proud. Good for Dustin and his family. I think he'll use his resources wisely, and I wish him good health, happiness, and a long career.
What's your point? That some firefighters, teachers and nurses have broken the law? Ok. I'll accept that. But then you have to give me all the doping scandals in pro sports? And Vick and his dogfighting ring? And the various rape and sexual assualt cases perpetrated by pro athletes? And the gambling scandals over the years? Need I go on? You've yet to explain why professional athletes are worth so much. |
You're right Hammer. Now that you've explained why we can't pay doctors more, perhaps you can explain why we shouldn't pay athletes LESS. |
