Laird is better than anything they have, or will have, for quite a while. I'm still puzzled by that lousy late trade of Pudge last season. There was no question they needed bull pen help, but you don't yank the heart out of the team and expect a better result.

Pudge had become unhappy @ Detroit. And when Pudge aint happy, nobody's happy. Trading Pudge was good for the team. In exchange for Farnsworthless was the bad news. I'm glad we picked up Laird, but I'm sick of getting rid of our pitching. Jair Jurrjens especially. I just don't understand why we keep letting so much pitching talent go....

He's a back up, at best. This is a rebuilding year.

You mean you couldn't contrive some angle to push your "crucify Bush for war crimes" fixation out of this thread yet, pete?

Laird is an inexpensive temp for the Tigers while they hone Dusty Ryan's skills. They also picked up a cheap shortstop yesterday, which gives them some payroll to leverage their bullpen weakness.
If the Tigers can insert some closers and get some good innings from Dontrell and verlander this season, they might live up to the expectations everyone had for them last Spring.
I do miss Pudge though, and the spark he always seemed to bring them.

I'm not the least bit surprised that Gerald Laird was traded, as Jarrod Saltalmacchia is too good a player to have sitting on the bench at his salary...

Gerald Laird will be a good fit for the Tigers.

The Rangers can not afford to play catch up going into the month of August, especially behind 10 games or more - their pitching can't be counted on to pull themselves out a funk!!

Pudge had lost it at the plate, no juice, no power. Ryan is not ready and I am not sure he every will be. They let that James Skelton go, I think he might be with the Diamondbacks, it will be interesting to see how he does.

I agree that Laird is not the answer. He may be a decent backup but if he is going to be the fulltime starter than he will be the weak spot in the line-up, especially at the plate.
Obviously pitching scares me big time too!

Hey Pete, did you catch what Pudge said when asked if he might be on that 104 man list of known steroid-users?
"Only God knows..." Yikes! What the hell...?

I saw Dusty Ryan catch the last game of the year - he looked fit, but you're right, nowhere near ready to call pitches. If he sticks around he could be a good catch and he clearly can generate some power.

The season can't get start soon enough!!

God I can't wait to watch some good baseball this year. I think the tigers will do MUCH better without the expectations they had placed on them last year.

I just about cried when Pudge was traded, but am sure it will be a decent move in the long run. At his age he doesn't have too much longer behind the plate, can you imagine the strain he's had on his knees? And with his lack of pop in the batters box they had to let him go.

I think trading Casey was what ripped the heart of the team right off the get go. Bringing all those high dollar me guys in was a bad move as well. Hopefully they'll be able to gel this year and play together as a team. No amount of talent will win games if there's not a cohesive team environment.

Last year was not too fun to watch-it was like they were missing passion for the game. Hopefully this year we'll see that spark again.
