Pettitte, umps have bad days as Yanks fall to Jays

Full story: Newsday

As Andy Pettitte's struggles at the new Yankee Stadium mount, can you blame him if he returns to Houston during the All-Star break and wants to stay there? Pettitte's problems at the Bronx bandbox continued this afternoon, and to make matters worse the umpiring crew was guilty of three blown calls that should have gone in the Yankees' favor.

I'm tired of lazy umpires.....Foster the ump told Jeter that the ball beat him to the bag and Rolen didn't have to tag him......this is a professional ump???? UNBELIEVABLE! There should be a way to get rid of umps like this. I say toss the ump!!

I was at the game...what a very nice ballpark. But everything...including the seats are way overpriced. I give the new stadium a B if anybody cares. Being 2009...and how much $$$ went into it...I was expecting more. Best part-very comfortable seating.

From the summer of 1999: a look inside former umpire union head Richie Phillips' views on accountability for umpires:

Phillips reserved his greatest scorn for attempts to hold the umpires accountable for their on-field performance. Upon learning of a MLBPA survey of players, coaches and managers which ranked each umpire against his peers, Phillips sneered, "I don't give any credence at all to ratings of officials because ratings are always subjective." When MLB asked clubs to chart pitches and file a report on each umpire's strike zone, Phillips snarled that this was "just another case of Big Brother watching over us."

An employer evaluating the competence of its employees. The nerve!

On the June 14 episode of HBO's Real Sports, Phillips took his arrogance to a new level. "I equate umpires with federal judges," said Phillips. "And I don't believe they should always be subject to the voter, just like federal judges are not subject to the voter." Sandy Alderson of MLB responded: "Federal judges can be impeached. I got worried when I found out that players were more concerned with who was umpiring the next day than they were about who was pitching."

Marty Foster has to be about the dumbest person on the planet. First, for calling Jeter out when he was not tagged, and second for saying Jeter did not have to be tagged if the ball beat him there. What's next Marty? Maybe your foot doesn't have to be on the bag for a force play if the ball beats you there.

Give Jeter all the credit in the world for being the class act that he is. There are a lot of things he could have said, but he instead takes the high road by simply saying he was baffled by the explanation and that he was unaware of the change in the rule that he no longer had to be tagged.

When are the Yankees finally going to fire That jerk Girardi ? He is Next to Cashman the Dumbest and most arrogant Manager in baseball !!! When your player Jeter is safe on 3rd base and the unpire calls him out with an incorrect decision and you do not defend in, especially in the press and do not call out the dumb umpire for his incorrect call, you are a SCHMUCK and a jackass. The Yankee management should be filing a protest with MLB....

Next , you jerks should be sending Joba down to the minors it is obvious that he does not put in the work to stay in shape, he is not a starter, get rid of him, he is not a team player, He would be better off going to AA meetings.....

Those poor calls by the umpires yesterday cost the Yankees the game and threw off Pettite, Where the hell are you Girardi when your team needs you to protest, getting yourself thrown out of the game when you do not accomplish anything productive does not help, you are nothing but a waste product you jerk..........

Poor, poor Yankees. After the Jeffrey Maier incident in which the Yankees treated him like royalty they deserve to have every close call go against them.

During the course of a season the calls missed by the umpires usually even out. Come on Yankee writers your team is not the only team the umpires have missed a call against.

Baseball expert is exactly right when an obvious missed call is made that helps the Yankees it is ok. They made that kid a hero.
