Wedge-bashers, please step up and explain how the manager has lost a team that, depleted by injuries and trades, is playing pretty well.

Eric Wedge has morphed into the Hargrove/Manuel/MacNamara-mana ger model. Make out the lineup, then sit back and see what happens. John MacNamara's favorite quote was "Just let the boys play". That kind of manager has no clue how to handle adversity, like prolonged batting slumps, ineffective bullpen pitchers, or just plain bad luck. Yes, the Tony LaRussa-types do over-manage sometimes, but they always get the most out of their player/pitchers. That's what we need.

Jim Leyland is a Tony LaRussa type of manager, and he loses his aura of brilliance a little more each season. For example, his use of Jason Verlander for 130 pitches was flat-out irresponsible. There are various ways to manage baseball teams, and just about all of them have worked when the appropriate managing style was combined with the right kind of players. Wedge's style seems to have worked better with the kind of players he has had since Hafner, Martinez, and Westbrook became unavailable.

Too little, to late. They have no chance to make the playoffs and that is all that counts in my book. Any season missing the playoffs is a wasted season. Wedge has failed not because of who he is, but because of who he works for. Give him the Boston lineup and he would be great. Give him a bunch of AA & AAA prospects with a few injured vets and this is what you get - 4th place going nowhere. |

Wedge is an idiot as well as the manager, Shapiro. Anytime they are interviewed anywhere on TV - be it news, ballgames, or press conferences after games, their remarks are always as asinine as they were before. These two don't have a clue! And as far s "depleted by injuries" they weren't playing well BEFORE all these guys went on the disabled list! As far as I'm concerned, Wedge deserves no credit! What credit should he get Because they're in last place? Come on, these guys are playing well at this time because they have nothing to play for, so there is no pressure. And yes, I agree with another comment above. Wedge is just letting them play. He's not managing! |

Both of the comments above are absolutely correct regarding managerial styles. Even the great Earl Weaver went out on a losing note because the Orioles farm system dried up and he no longer had either 3-run homers or a good bullpen. My complaint with Wedge is that he does not respond to situations as they occur, but keeps hoping that if he has a steady hand, everything will be fine. All those 1-0 losses back in May & June were the most glaring examples of inactivity. If being given an All-Star lineup and being low-key worked, chimps would manage the pros.

Put another game between us & last place. The Tigers and 3rd place are next. A .500 season is w/in reach, but will require .600+ ball the rest of the year. Just look at it as a building block for 2009 (you all know the Tribe does better in "odd" years - 95, 97, 05, 07).

Speaking of not having a clue....that would be you. Did you not recall that both Hafner and Victor were trying to play through injuries all season before going on the DL? Losing your 2&3 starting pitchers and 3& 4 hitters for extended periods of time kills a team. Name one team that could have survived those injuries to the team. Can't do it...can you? Oh yeah....11 of the last 14 and not in last place. HMMMMMMM. |

I think Wedge is a pretty good manager. He isn't a big button-pusher but the players seem to respect and produce for him, internal conflicts seem to be non-existent (or at least out of public view), and I've never heard any player complain that he doesn't communicate honestly or forthrightly which I think today's players values highly.
However, I appreciate other opinions. Overall this discussion has been a notch above the schoolyard tone that often afflicts these boards. Thanks to all who presented well-reasoned points of view. |
