why is there an apostrophyin "A's"? If the plural form is meant, no "'" is needed. If the possessive is meant, what is being possessed?

The apostrophe is used to avoid confusion. The Oakland A's without the apostrophe, the Oakland As, can be construed as a typo for the word "as."
