With experience, Minnesota Twins swing less, improve walk record

Full story: TwinCities.com

Last season, when his lineup got particularly eager to swing regardless of whether the opposing pitcher was offering strikes, Twins manager Ron Gardenhire lamented his hitters' refusal to accept those balls and take first base.

Hughes has been patient. It's good to see young athletes who will work through adversity. Gardy is usually good about working guys in so I won't be surprised to see Luke's name in the line up this afternoon. Harris needs to embrace the opportunity that's been given him. Playing everyday for a while will reveal whether he should play more often at third.

Harris, like Young, is one of those guys who has a good swing and lots of potential but never quite lives up to it although Young keeps people more interested because he has those strong September finishes. Both these guys have walked more this season. Although Harris' batting average is lower than Punto's, Harris has a higher on-base percentage. As others have said, Punto is the perfect utility infielder and would surely get his share of playing time at third, short, and second if Harris brought up his batting average, kept drawing the walks, and proved to be a consistent third baseman. Harris can drive the ball into the gaps and occasionally drive one out. He also has good at-bats, fouling off a lot of pitches. A Twins' strength this season has been in forcing opposing starters to throw a lot of pitches.
