Why did he bunt? Joe Mauer calls it the 'best play at the time'

Full story: TwinCities.com

Good idea or bad, Joe Mauer's decision to bunt with one out and the go-ahead run on second Tuesday night is an apt microcosm for a Twins season that continues to drift into severe disappointment.

Punto bunts, Hudson bunts our #3 hitter swings away. If he is that unsure of himself hitting now bat him 7 and move Young to 3. Manage Gardy not just protect the golden boy.

This was an absolutely terrible play and is indicative of just where Joe's head is at right now. A #3 hitter needs to be a run producer and if Joe isn't confident in his ability to get the job done he needs to be moved out of that spot. This team lacks leadership both on the field and in the dugout. We have been complacent and way too satisfied with mediocrity.

"I just told you; I don't tell our guys what to do".

Gee, Gardy, maybe that's the problem, ya think?
And I always thought that the third base coach touching his
nose and crotch all those times were signals..........
silly me.

Goes to show the lack of confidence the Twins have when your #3 hitter bunts...however with the number of double play balls Mauer has hit into is it any wonder he lacks confidence in hitting away with a runner on 1st?

Mauer's intent was to leave it up to Kubel??? Didn't Kubel go 0-4 with two K's??? Didn't Kubel strike out 4 times in one game against the White Sox...followed by another two K game????

Why is Kubel batting 4th when Delmon Young should be there????

Why the heck did Mauer bunt??? Because he knew his probability of hitting into a double play...that's it in a nutshell...no confidence!

I don't think it's Gardy. Joe can be a fine hitter if you a looking at batting average. He's not a home run/RBI guy though. He has really only had ONE season where he put up th ode types of numbers. If you compare him to the other #3 jhitters in the leagu, even the ones on crummy teams, Joe is there in avg. But not in hr, RBI, or 2bls. Joe brings people to the park. A few more seasons in a row like this, he'll stop doing that too. I too think the Twins are done unless they get some major help for the rotation that can be consistent and win some games.

Send Joe to the minors for a week to wake him up. The way they have been playing he will not be missed.

So let me get this straight. The Twins are paying Mauer $184-million so he can try to be...Nick Punto?

Slowey probably saved his spot in the rotation, for now, with his decent (but not great) performance last night. Now we just need to replace Blackburn and/or Baker in the rotation. Put one of 'em in the bullpen and the other to Rochester to send a message. Trade a couple of prospects for an actual major league pitcher.

Bad play. Joe Warning Track kills the rally. And to think, the starting pitching was actually pretty good.

Hope he can get his head straight one of these days.

That bunt was not a terrible idea, although the execution may not have been the best. The best hitters in baseball, and yes Mauer still is at the top of that list, make outs 7 out of ten times. If he felt like he could drag bunt for a hit, that's not a bad play. Rod Carew made a living doing that and he won seven batting titles. If Mauer had been successful, now a flyball from Kubel would have scored a run. It was not a sacrifice bunt, he was trying to bunt for a hit. I'm not sure what all the geniuses that post on here do for jobs, but I'm guessing that you are not asked to hit an object less than 3" across traveling at you at 95 mph, with a 2 lb. wooden stick less than 3" across. You can keep ripping Mauer if you want, but don't forget why you quit playing this game when you were twelve! I'm guessing that most of you geniuses could take 100 swings in that situation and wouldn't touch a ball... so before you rip Mauer, just remember he doesn't come by your work and tell you to make sure you get the cheese straight on the Big Macs!

It was better than hitting into a double play which the Twins have been doing a lot of lately. I bet if every hitter bunted once in a while our record would be much better than it is.

The bunt was idiotic, but earlier when you have a runner at third one out and Kubel can't even put a ball in play that hurts. Plus watching Fatboy Mijares come in and blow the game after we tied it up seems more of an issue than Mauer's bunt attempt. Why is that idiot still not on a bus to Rochester?
